Snow in Southern Hemispshere as Ski Area Aims to Open for First Day of Summer

It's the last few days of spring in the southern hemisphere, by the meteorological measurement of the seasons at least, but there has been fresh snow reported on the ski slopes of Australia and in Chile, about two months after the 2019 ski season ended there. Mt Hotham is pictured below.

New Festival for Andorra

A new festival, the Arinsal Icebreaker, is being billed as "The biggest party in the Pyrenees this winter."

Taking place between March 15th and 22ns there'll be 15 DJ's, four live bands and apres ski on the slopes as well as mountain lodge BBQ's.

Avoriaz Opening Two Weeks Early

Avoriaz has announced a 'partial opening' this weekend, two weeks ahead of the official opening date.

The move comes thanks to what the resort describes as, "the good snow conditions, with 40 cm of snow in the station and 70 cm at the top of the area."

2019-20 Season Underway in the Pyrenees

The 2019-20 ski season is now fully underway in the Pyrenees with ski areas open in Andorra joining leading areas on the French and Spanish sides of the border that opened at the weekend, joining a few smaller centres that opened early a week or two ago.

Season Start in the Alps Looking Still Better After More Big Snowfalls

Another very heavy snowstorm in the Alps over the weekend brought more big accumulations to the region ahead of the start of the main season now just a few weeks away.[/b]

The snowfall was most intense in most areas on Saturday and was accompanied by very strong winds which led to the temporary closure of some areas whilst the worst of the weather passed.

The 47th London Ski Show is Go – 30% Discount for Early Ticket Buyers

The Telegraph group may currently be up for sale but the UK's only remaining show for the general public, the long running London ski show which is currently staged at the Battersea Evolution centre and known as 'The Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Festival' will be back for its 47th year next year, October 29- November 1, 2020, the organisers say, and tickets are already on sale!

Ski Areas Close Today in the Alps as Another Huge Storm Hits

Many of the 50 or so ski areas already open for the 2019-20 season have announced they have closed for all or part of today as another huge November snowstorm has arrived in the Alps.

Storm force winds gusting to 100kph and very heavy snowfall have made conditions unsafe to open at many areas with Crans Montana and Verbier (pictured above this morning) amongst those announcing they are closed today.

World Cup Competition in Finland This Weekend

[b]The 2019-20 World cup ski season switches its focus to Finland this weekend with the annual Levi slalom races for both men and women.

These are the first World cup competitions for three weeks since the Solden GS competitions but from, now on contests come thick and fast with something most weekends for the next four months, culminating with the world Cup Finals for alpine events in Cortina d'Ampezzo next March.

Burton Snowboards Founder Jake Burton Carpenter Has Died

It has been announced that Jake Burton, founder of Burton snowboards, and the main driving force behind the growth of snowboarding over the past four decades has died suddenly at the age of 65.

Burton had been an early enthusiast for, and expert user of, a prototype snowboard called 'The Snurfer' which was invented in the mid-1960s.

Deep Snow As Season Starts in the French Pyrenees

Conditions are looking good in the French Pyrenees for the start of the 2019-20 ski season where several areas have already opened early and more are set to join them this weekend.

Resorts in the region frequently see better snow depths than those in the French Alps and Autumn 2019 is so far shaping up well as this image yesterday from La Mongie in the Grand Tourmalet ski area illustrates. It's due to open the weekend after next on 30th November.

Snow Depths in the Alps Reach 3 Metres / 10 Feet

The big snowfalls in the Alps over the first half of November has led to two resorts now posting three/metre/10 feet base depths already.

The Presena glacier area at Passo Tonale in Trentino, Italy as well as Austria's highest slope at the Pitztal glacier are both reporting three metres of snow lying on their upper slopes.

New Gondola, Wider Slope and a 4.5 Mile Long Toboggan Run for Sölden

Sölden in Austria will open another flash new gondola this winter.

The former Rotkoglbahn lift in Hochsolden has been replaced by a new, modern 10-seater gondola.

The top station of this new gondola will move to the same altitude as the Giggijock restaurant, and the piste down (from the top) will be widened to improve the former bottleneck.

Up to 3 Feet More Snowfall Reported Overnight in the Alps

The latest spate of heavy snowfall in the Alps has led to reports of up to 90cm (three feet) of snow at some areas in the past 24 hours.

Once again the snowfall has been heaviest in the Central and Eastern Alps and Dolomites but there's been plenty of snow across the whole region, with Tignes, further west, posting 30cm of fresh snow since yesterday.

Scottish Ski Centre to Re-set Lift Ticket Prices to 1989

Nevis Range ski area near Fort William and Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis in Scotland has announced it will celebrate its 30th birthday by resetting lift ticket prices back to what they were on opening day in 1989.

The country's youngest ski centre and the only one to operate a gondola lift to access its slopes will be charging £12.50 for a day's lift pass for adults and £8.50 for kids, the price they were 30 years ago, on Saturday 21st December, however you do need to book these in advance online.

Scandinavia’s Biggest Ski Resort Opening Terrain “Historically Early”

The ski season never really stops completely in Scandinavia thanks to three Norwegian Summer ski areas bridging the gap between mid-spring and mid-autumn when most of the region's 500 or so ski areas are closed.

Then the 19-20 ski season got underway in early October at Ruka in Finland which uses snowfarming of last season's snow, stockpiled and stored through summer, in order to be the first in Europe without a glacier to open for the season.

Very Heavy Snowfall in Austrian Alps - 80cm in 24 Hours

[b]There has been some very heavy snowfall in the Austrian Alps overnight with ski areas reporting up to 80cm (nearly three feet) of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

The Stubai (pictured above this morning) has posted the biggest number so far but the Kitzsteinhorn has had 50cm, Kaunertal 45cm and Pitztal 40cm of fresh, on top of lots of snowfall over the past 12 days.

Pyrenees 19-20 Ski Season Starting Tomorrow (Wednesday 13 November)

The 2019-20 ski season is set to get started in the Pyrenees on Wednesday, 13 November after Spain's Alp 2500 ski area shared by Masella and La Molina announced its plan to open at short notice.

A second Spanish ski area, Formigal, say they'll be opening early for the season this Saturday too.

A number of the world's leading resorts are opening this weekend along with a dozen or so other ski areas to take the total number of centres already open for the 2019-20 ski season in Europe and North America past the 50 mark.

Italy's Cortina d'Amezzo is perhaps the biggest surprise, opening 20 days earlier than expected on Sunday 10th November.

Hahnenkamm Gears Up For 80th Race With Record €100,000 Race Winner Prizes

[b]In these uncertain times we are apparently wanting to secure our futures as far ahead as possible, so it's probably good news that you can now book a ski holiday departing in a little over 18 months' time in April, 2021.

The UK's largest operator, Crystal Ski holidays, have put their ski holidays on sale for the winter after next (2020/21) today, more than a month before departures actually start on packages for the upcoming 2019/20 winter.

Fresh Snowfall on Glaciers Passes 50cm Mark

The amount of fresh snow on some already-open glacier ski areas has passed the 50cm (20 inches) mark at a number of ski areas.

The Stubai glacier has reported the most to date with 65cm (two feet, two inches) since Saturday. The Kaunertal (55cm) and Hintertux (45cm) are not far behind, with yet-to-open Alpe d'Huez reporting 40cm in 24 hours at the weekend. The Molltal glacier also reported 40cm in the last 24 hours.

Italian Ski Area Grows in Size by 10%

An Italian ski resort will open new terrain served by new lifts in order to expand its ski slope extent by 10% this winter.

The Paganella ski area in Trentino will unveil a new gondola lift, with cabins that can each carry up to 10 people, ferrying 2400 to 3000 people per hour in to the new terrain.

19-20 Ski Season Underway on US East Coast

Killington in Vermont looks to have won the race to be "first in the East" to open for North America for the 2019-20 season.

It has been an unseasonably warm autumn on the Eastern side of North America (Whilst resorts including Breckenridge and Steamboat in Colorado posted record October snowfall) and whilst there have been periods cold enough for snowmaking in the East, and even a little natural snowfall, over the past month, it hasn't lasted long enough to build a skiable base. Until now.

Super Storm Starts to Bring Snow to the Alps

A huge storm system that is the first of this autumn to be given it's own name has started to bring forecast heavy snow to the Alps.

Christened Amelie and with its heart moving up the west coast of Europe, it's expected to bring 50-150cm of snow to the Alps over the next few days, with some areas potentially seeing more if the most optimistic forecasts prove correct.

Big Snow Heading to The Alps

Although the 15 or so glacier ski areas that are already open for winter 19-20 in the Alps are currently reporting a perfect sunny day on their slopes, big changes are afoot with a major low pressure system set to bring some big snowfalls to the Alps this week-end.
