Ski Georgia in 2020

Among the usual list of more predictable new-destination choices being offered by tour-operators for the upcoming 2019-20 ski season, a less well-known option on the far eastern fringes of Europe has popped up.

British ski holiday company Mountain Heaven (mountainheaven.co.uk), who are best known for their apartment and chalet holidays in the Alps, but who also have experience of organising several highly successful ski trips to Iran in recent years, will organise a trip to Georgia in 2020.

Innsbruck Pass Expands to 13 Ski Areas and 22 Non-Ski Attractions

The Innsbruck regional ski pass is having a re-boot this winter to cover still more areas and also encompass city attractions.

Innsbruck has always had quite a strong winter offer because it gets more summer tourists so has plenty of bed space to fill in winter, driving down prices.

Ski Glaciers Stripped of Snow By Summer Heat

Glaciers ski areas in Austria, France and Norway that were due to be open through August have been forced to close early or, they hope, temporarily, due to the hot summer sun, even above 3,000 metres, which has melted snow cover away completely in some cases.

High Flying Brit Ormerod Takes Silver in 19-20 World Cup Big Air in New Zealand

Despite being away from World Cup competition for almost two years, Katie Ormerod has returned to the top of the sport in the best way possible, standing on the podium today in New Zealand.

The 2019/20 Snowboard World Cup big air season commenced at Cardrona yesterday with qualification taking place a day earlier than scheduled due to an ominous weather forecast.

Crystal Add Additional Austrian Resort to 2019-20 Selection

Crystal have added the Austrian resort of Hopfgarten, part of the SkiWelt region, one of Austria's biggest with 286km of linked slopes, to their long list of destination choices for 2019-20.

The company had previously announced they were adding an area called the Drei Zinnen or '3 Peaks' in the Italian Dolomites.

Another Half Metre of Snow on Australian Slopes

The remarkable 2019 ski season in Australia show no sign of taking a downturn after the country's ski centres emerge from their fourth major snowstorm.

The latest snowy onslaught brought reports of up to 53cm of snowfall at Perisher, the country's largest area, by this morning when the snow was still falling. Perisher is one of the ski areas that is reporting the snow now lying more than two metres deep.

Les Gets Spends Big on Snowmaking

Les Gets in the French Alps have made what they believe is the biggest investment of any resort in France this year as they seek to dramatically increase their snowmaking cover.

Much of the money has gone on the new Renardière hillside reservoir which has a capacity of 76,000m3 of water meaning that it can produce around 150,000m3 of snow which a resort spokesperson says will ensure that, "the most popular areas of the resort," are accessible right from the beginning of the season.

First Flights Announced To New Scandinavian Ski Airport

A new airport, located just 10 minutes from one of Scandinavia's largest ski resorts, is set to open this winter and the UK will be the first country outside the region to offer direct flights in and out from December.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) have announced they'll operate the only direct flights between the UK, departing from London Heathrow, to the brand new Scandinavian Mountains Airport, along with introducing services from Aalborg in Norway and Denmark's Copenhagen.

August Snowfall in North America

Following the snow in the Alps and Scandinavia last week, mid-August snowfalls have been reported in the north-western corner of North America too, in both the USA and Canada.

Up to 30cm (a foot) of snow was reported on higher peaks in British Columbia, Oregon and Washington state but the cold air allowed snow to fall down to higher valleys too.

Fresh August Snow on Alpine Glaciers

At least two glaciers in the Alps have reported fresh snow in the past 24 hours. The Dachstein and Stubai glaciers both posted images showing several centimetres of fresh snow at glacier-level restaurants.

Neither is currently open for snowsports but both will aim to open next month along with half a dozen other ski areas in France, Italy, Norway and Austria; more than doubling the current total of six open in Europe.

French 2019 Summer Ski Season Ends Early

The 2019 summer ski season in France is over after Les 2 Alpes followed the move by Tignes and finished their summer ski opening sooner than expected.

Originally the resort, which claims to operate the largest skiable glacier in the Alps, said it expected its summer ski season to run from June 22nd to August 25th, but it appears its last day for summer snowsports was last Thursday, August 8th. The resort had said the end of August target date was subject to conditions.

Ski Area Finally Opens as Snow Hits New Zealand

[b]A New Zealand ski area that had been unable to open all season for lack of adequate snow cover has finally done so today.

Fox Peak ski area received a 40cm snowfall back at the start of June before its scheduled opening date but has had very little since, until the past 48 hours when a fresh snow storm has hit New Zealand bringing some of the best snowfalls of the season so far.

Aussie Areas Expect up to 3 Feet of Snow From Third Big Storm of 2019 Season

A major snow storm currently hitting Australian ski areas is set to deposit 50-90cm of snow on the slopes by the weekend, according to forecasts.

It's the third big multi-day snowstorm to hit the country this season, which is proving to be a good one for most Aussie areas.

68cm of Snow, 130kph Winds, -15C ...This Week in New Zealand

It has been a week of weather extremes in New Zealand where up to 68cm of fresh snow has been reported falling on ski slopes over the past 72 hours, but there have also been gales of up to 130km, temperatures at double digits below freezing reported and periods of rain in places.

Jet2.com To Fly To Innsbruck From Birmingham, Stansted and Manchester This Winter

Jet2 has announced five new ski routes for the coming ski season, with three of them to a new destination for the airline, Innsbruck.

The airline has flights on sale to the Tyrolean capital, host of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, from Birmingham, London Stansted and Manchester – meaning the company will operate over 65 weekly departures to eight ski destinations this coming winter.
