Verbier To Open For 18-19 Season This Friday

Verbier (pictured above today) has announced this morning that they'll be opening some terrain in the Lac des Vaux sector this Friday November 2nd and through the weekend following 60cm (two feet) of snowfall over the past three days.
"Thanks to this snowfall and the machine-made snow, we can open our slopes from Friday 2 November with excellent conditions," a resort statement reads, noting that the plan is to open the Attelas-Ruinettes sector next, depending on weather and snowmaking operations over the coming weeks.

Summer Ski Area Closes Early due to Too Much Snow

Italy's Passo Stelvio has closed a week earlier than planned after the heavy snow and other extreme weather conditions that have killed at least nine people in the country and flooded Venice.
Passo Stelvio's ski slopes have an unusual season, opening early May when snow is closed from the road pass, one of Italy's highest, as the Giro d'Italia cycle race comes through. It then stays open to late October or early November ands had planned to close at the end of the day on Sunday, 4th November.

Canada’s Ski Season May Start This Weekend (or Maybe Next)

Canada's ski season may start this weekend after heavy snowfall hit Alberta.
So far no ski areas have confirmed they're definitely opening yet but the ski areas around Banff and Jasper in Western Alberta aim to open in early November and Lake Louise, Sunshine and Marmot Basin all say they'll be opening around 9-10th November – the second weekend of the month.

First Men's World Cup Race of Season Cancelled as Snow Starts to Build in Alps

The men's GS race scheduled to take place this morning at Solden has been cancelled as snowfall intensifies at the Austrian village.
So far the resort reports 45cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours, issuing an October powder alarm this morning, and some forecasts say another metre may accumulate over the coming 36 hours.

Huge Snowfalls Forecast For The Alps

Snow is falling in many ski regions of the world at present but forecasting models are suggesting there will be some really huge snowfalls at some areas and some altitudes this coming Monday, 29th October.
Some high ski areas including the slopes above Cortina, Livigno, Madesimo, Solden, St Moritz and others may receive over a metre of snow in 24 hours if forecasting models prove correct.

Heavy Snow Forecast on European and North American Slopes

Heavy snowfall is expected over the coming week at ski areas on both sides of the Atlantic.
Around 20 ski areas are already open in the Alps, Scandinavia and the USA and most should see some snow, whilst others will receive a good start to their snow bases ahead of seasons due to start over the coming eight weeks.

Cervinia, Killington, St Moritz and Tignes Open For Season

At least another another half dozen ski areas are opening today and tomorrow in the Alps and North America as the start of the 2018-19 ski season continues to gain momentum - despite the fact it's only mid-October.
Tignes started the French season earlier this week when it managed to open limited terrain a few weeks later than its planned opening date, putting the achievement down to efforts by its snow ream rather than any arrival of fresh snow.

Huge Snowfall as 2018 Season ends in The Andes

There's been a big mid-spring snowfall in Argentina the day after the last ski area still operating there ended its 2018 ski season.
Cerro Catedral, the largest ski area in South America in terms of uplift capacity ended its season on Tuesday, but then reported 15cm of snowfall on its lower slopes over the following 24 hours, with a huge 50cm of fresh snow on its upper slopes.

New In-Resort Massage App To Launch at London Ski Festival

A new app that allows users to book an in-resort massage at resorts across the French Alps is the be launched next week at the London Ski Show in Battersea Park.
The new Alps Massage online booking App will allow skiers and boarders to book a mobile massage service to visit them in their accommodation with some services available to book with just an hour's notice, subject to availability.

In 2019, Freeride World Tour (FWT) athletes will return to five of the most challenging and pristine freeride venues the globe has to offer.
50 of the world's best freeriders in four categories – ski men, ski women, snowboard men, and snowboard women – will face-off in big mountain arenas spanning across three continents for their chance to be Freeride World Champion. Following the fourth stop in Vallnord-Arcalís (Andorra) only riders holding enough points will have the opportunity to compete in the final stop in Verbier, Switzerland in March.

New Slopes in Spain

Baqueira Beret in Spain's Val d'Aran has announced new ski runs will open there this winter.
The resort, located a little over 100 miles from Barcelona, already has the largest ski area in the Spanish Pyrenees with 165km of piste.
The new runs, covering around 2.27 hectares, will be created in the resort's os Baciver area, close to the Saumet's zone.

3 Ski Areas To be Open in Colorado this Weekend

Arapahoe Basin (pictured above) and Loveland ski areas have announced they'll open for their 2018-19 ski season this Friday and Saturday respectively.
Arapahoe Basin's Black Mountain Express lift will start turning at 9am on Friday giving skiers and snowboarders access to the intermediate High Noon trail seven days a week.

Five New Ski Runs in the Dolomites

Italy's Dolomiti Superski region is spending €90m ahead of the coming winter on more than half a dozen flashy new lifts and lots more snowmaking improvements, but the region is also unveiling some new ski runs for the coming season.
A new slope, the "Panoramica Druscié," has been built in Cortina d'Ampezzo, while in Pozza di Fassa the "Aloch" race slope will be transformed into a giant slalom piste suitable for competitions.

Les 2 Alpes Cancels Autumn Ski and Snowboard event for Second Year

Les 2 Alpes has been forced to cancel its 'Enjoy The Glacier' mid-autumn ski and snowboard festival for the second year in a row due to lack of snow cover on the glacier.
The event, which involves ski testing, fun events and offers a snowsports festival atmosphere had run for many years under various names over a week long period, including the two successive weekends either end, usually running from late October to the start of November and coinciding with the English schools' half term week. It then normally closes its slopes again until December.

Cairngorm Dry Slope Plan Rejected by Planners

There has been a surprise rejection of plans for a new dry ski slope area at the bottom of CairnGorm Mountain ski area above Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands.
The £1.5m dry slope was to have been located near the base of the slopes and feature a main slope of over 100 metres and a nursery slope.

Kitzbuhel Opening for 2018-19 Ski Season Tomorrow

Kitzbuhel has announced it will open for its 2018-19 ski season tomorrow, Saturday 13th October, with around 2km of runs skiable at its Resterkogel area.
It will be the first resorts in the Alps that doesn't have a glacier to open for the ski season. The 2km of runs is reported to be more than what's currently available on some glaciers.

Colorado Ski Area Opening This Weekend

Following speculation that some of Colorado's highest ski areas might open this weekend as heavy snowfall hits the famous ski state, Wolf Creek has announced it will be opening weekends from Saturday 13th October.
The resort, which has had 60cm of snowfall so far, says it will have three lifts operating from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays through October up to its previously planned opening date of 2nd November.

Australian Areas End Successful 2018 'Season of the Shovel'

The remaining Australian ski areas that were still open for winter 2018 at the weekend closed for the season on Sunday with many already starting work on new lifts and other upgrades for 2019.
Most of the areas have reported a great winter with regular snowfalls through the southern hemisphere's winters with bases passing the 2 metre depth mark at several areas in late august and setting 'deepest snow base since 2004' levels at around the same time.

Lapland Season Start & More Austrian Glaciers Open

The ski season has just got underway at 9.30 local time this morning in Ruka, Finland, with the Molltal glacier in Austria, closed for the past three weeks due to lack of snow, re-opening too.
The opening and re-opening follows the Solden glacier opening on Wednesday. The Stubai near Innsbruck is due to open tomorrow, taking the number of Austrian glaciers open to six - more than the rest of the northern hemisphere's open areas combined. The Kitzsteinhorn however, which had planned to open today, has decided to delay doing so for another week.

Final Week of the Australian Ski Season

It's the final week of the season for most ski areas in Australia.
It has been a good season at most areas with some reporting the deepest snowbase for 14 years around late august and early last month.
Perisher (pictured above this week), the country's biggest ski area, which had planned to close on September 30th, has extended its season by a week to this coming Sunday.

3 More Austrian Glaciers Open(ing) After Fresh Snow

Solden has announced it will open for the 18-19 ski season from this morning after fresh snowfall over the past few days.
The Otztal resort will run its SS I + II and SL Karlskogl lifts as well as run 32 today and tomorrow and add SL Seiter Jöchl and runs 33 and 34 from Friday.

More Problems at Aviemore Ski Area as Funicular Closed Indefinitely

The CairnGorm funicular railway, which is the main lift at Aviemore ski area in Scotland, has been shut down "as a safety precaution" whilst further investigations are carried out into new concerns raised in a recent routine inspection, the resorts owners, the state body Highlands & Islands Enterprise have said.
