2017 Ends with Big Snowfalls, 2018 to Start With Big Snowfalls

The start of winter 2017-18 has continued to be the snowiest this century so far in the Alps with two more big snowfalls since Christmas Day.
Today is seeing something of a lull in the snowy deluge with sunny skies (as at Val Thorens pictured above) and almost every run that can be safely opened open with powder skiing on ski slopes almost across the continent.

OBE and MBEs for Ski Industry Figures in New Years Honours List

Two Brits who have worked in the ski industry and achieved great things in their fields have been awarded an OBE and MBE in the Queen's New Years' Honours List.
Sarah Lewis, a former Team GB ski racer who has run the International Ski Federation (FIS) since 2000 and James McIntosh who was instrumental in the establishment of The Lecht ski centre in Scotland 40 years ago have been recognised for their contributions to sport.

Tour Op Issues Travel Warning for New Year week Arrivals in the Alps

A tour operator has joined French ski resorts in issuing a travel advisory to anyone heading to the Alps this weekend, particularly for tomorrow, Saturday 30th December.
Following huge snowfalls on Wednesday and Thursday this week with up to 80cm reported falling in 24 hours, a second, similar heavy snowfall is forecast for Saturday across large parts of the Alps.

Over 200 Powder Alarms Issued in Alps on 28 December 2018

Over 200 'powder alarms' – reporting 20cm (eight inches) or more of fresh snow in the previous 24 hours - had been issued by ski resorts across the Alps by 10am this morning, Thursday, December 28th.[/b]
Among the bigger resorts, Bormio (pictured above), Solden and Les 2 Alpes each say they have had 40cm; Flaine and Verbier report 35cm; Adelboden and Grindelwald 27cm; Les Arcs, Davos and Meribel report 25cm and St Anton, Mayrhofen and Tignes 20cm.

White Christmas in Colorado and Utah

The US ski states of Colorado and Utah have reported big snowfalls since Christmas Eve.
The two states had suffered a mostly warm and dry November and December and were badly in need of a good snow dump for the holidays.
Santa seems to have delivered with, for example, 36cm at Breckenridge in the past 26 hours and now 58cm (nearly two feet) since Christmas Eve.

Laax Add A Business Centre to Mountain Top

Swiss resort Laax has opened a high altitude business centre as part of as complete renovation of one of their mountain top lift station buildings.
A spokesman for the centre said they believe companies and individuals will do better business and come up with more innovative ideas if they spend part of their day on the slopes, part in the funky new on-mountain business facility which they've named 'The Bridge.'

Hope of Some Snow as Poor Conditions Persist in Colorado and Utah

There has been some fresh snow in north western US over the past few days after several weeks of dry weather, but with Christmas and New Year looming there's still no real respite for resorts in Colorado and Utah which are struggling to open terrain after a dry and sometimes warm autumn.

Three Skiers Convicted of Causing Avalanche

Swiss Media has reported that three skiers have been convicted of causing an avalanche which led to the injury of two other skiers.
The avalanche, at Anzere in the Valais region, happened in 2009. The three were initially convicted by a local district court but the initial decision was overturned in the Valais regional court heard an appeal. The latest decision is from Switzerland's highest court, in Lausanne, after the public prosecutor appealed themselves against the Valais court's decision.

Max 7 Day Snowfall Totals in Alps Pass 3m/10 Feet Mark

A couple of small ski areas in Eastern Switzerland are claiming to have received around three metres/10 feet of fresh snow in the past week.
Toggenburg says it has had 2.7m (nine feet) of snow and Les Maccots 3.5m (nearly 12 feet) in the same seven day period.

(Still More) Heavy Snow in the Alps

It is snowing again in the Alps as forecast after a few days break from the last huge snow storms.[/b]
Up to 90cm more snow is expected at some resorts by the end of the weekend.
Ski areas in Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland have been posting big snowfall totals for the past 24 hours already.

A Fondue in Your Gondola Sir?

A Swiss company is to offer in-gondola-cabin fondue dinners at three of the country's leading resorts this winter.
Of course not whilst the cabins are full of skiers, but at the end of the day when the company, Tête à Tête - Swiss Events, transforms the entire lift in to a vast moving pop-up restaurant with specially designed tables popped in to 60 or 70 cabins, depending on the lift.

72 Hour Snowfall Totals Reach 1.3m in Alps (Lots in Dolomites and Pyrenees too)

Pic top shows tour op Crystal's staff digging themselves out in La Thuile as their working season begins.
The snow is continuing to fall very heavily in the Alps with several ski resorts in France and Italy now reporting up to 1.3 metres (4 feet, 4 inches) of snowfall since Saturday.

Up to 70cm Of Fresh Snow so Far This Weekend in the Alps

Resorts across the Alps have reported up to 50cm of snowfall so far this weekend.
Powder alarms for 20cm+ of fresh snow in 24 hours were posted by more than 100 leading ski areas yesterday in the big four Alpine nations along with countries and principalities like Liechtenstein and Germany.

Pre-Weekend Snowfall in the Alps

The snow has started falling in the Alps with a number of leading resorts reporting 20-50cm of fresh now in the past 24 hours.
This appears to be the start of a snowy weekend with most ski areas in the Alps expected to receive between 20 and 50cm over the next 48 hours, continuing the so far largely very good start to the season.

All Weather Snowmaking Underway in Scotland (As Big Blizzard Moves In)

Snowmaking using a TechnoAlpin Snow Factory machine is underway at Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in Scotland.
SnowFactories are large articulated units which, unlike conventional snowmaking machines, make snow within their internal chambers before spraying it on to the slopes. Snow can therefore be made regardless of the external temperature.

A Big Opening Day in the Dolomities

Today is a big day in the Dolomites with a big jump in the amount of terrain open ahead of one of Italy's major early-December public holidays.
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is observed across Italy on Friday 8th December, and Milan also has a holiday on Thursday 7th December in honour of St. Ambrose whilst today, Wednesday 6th, Bari in the south of the country celebrates this life of St. Nicholas—Santa Claus!

Pippa Middleton Launches Ski2Paralympics Challenge

A team of Paralympic ski and snowboard athletes will be representing Great Britain at the 2018 Paralympics will take place in PyeongChang in South Korea between 9-18 March 2018 and they're looking for as much funding as they can raise.
All are supported by Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) and the charity's patron, royal sister-in-law and extreme sports adventurer Pippa Middleton has helped launch a '5,560 mile ski challenge' named #Ski2Paralymics with that very aim.

National Schools Snowsport Week Returning in 2018

Major Season Opening Weekend in the Pyrenees

This weekend marks the big opening of ski areas in the Pyrenees for the 2017-18 ski season.[/b]
Although half-a-dozen ski areas had already opened in the French and Spanish Pyrenees, some opening early including Baqueira Beret and Massella in Spain because of good early November snowfalls in the region, it's this weekend that dozens of areas including the rest of the region's bigger players open.

Powdair Update: No Flights This Winter

5 of 6 Scottish Ski Area Are Open for 17-18 Season in November

As of today five of the six Scottish ski centres have opened at least some terrain in the past week.
Only Nevis Range, which traditionally closes for maintenance until Christmas week, has not yet decided to open any runs.
It has been an unusually consistently spell of cold weather in Scotland over the past few weeks with some heavy snow showers and good conditions for snowmaking.
