Channel 4 Axes ‘The Jump’

The Sun is reporting that Channel 4 has axed 'The Jump' TV series which saw 'celebrities' compete against each other in various on-snow events filmed in the Austrian Tirol.

The official reason for the show finishing is to make way for broadcasts of the 2018 Winter Olympics from South Korea. Officially the show has not been cancelled but is 'resting' for 2018 and may return, there are also rumours of it being re-invented with 'less dangerous' summer water sports replacing snow sports.

Mammoth Mountain to Stay Open for Skiing in to August

California's Mammoth Mountain ski area has announced its ski season, which began in early November last year, will finally end on August 6th – 270 days and nine months after it opened.

Following record January snowfall Mammoth had the deepest snow in the world for most of last season by a long way – with nearly nine metres (30 feet) lying on upper slopes.

Fresh Summer Snow in the Alps

Glacier ski areas in the Alps have been reporting fresh snow on their high altitude slopes in the past 24 hours, with in at lower elevations.

Currently eight glacier ski areas are open – two each in the big flour ski nations – and most reported a few inches (up to five centimetres) of fresh snow, with Tignes posting the image above from its café terrace by the Grand Motte glacier, and Hintertux the image below of one of its staff.

With less than four months until Val Thorens opens on 18 November, we look at what's new in the highest ski resort in Europe for this season.

LAC DU LOU MOUNTAIN REFUGE

If you love escaping into nature, then the Vallon du Lou offers a wild mountain break between Val Thorens and Les Menuires. You can access the refuge by skiing off-piste or by snowshoes. The local region has invested €1.2 million in this project to provide hikers and skiers with a new peaceful refuge above Lac du Lou. This classic mountain chalet can sleep 31 and boasts a large dining room as well as an on-site guardian. You can a meal at this magical site or even stay for a night under the stars.

UK’s Two Biggest Ski Tour Ops Release 17-18 Programmes

The UK's two largest ski holiday tour operators who together represent about a third of bookings have formally released their main programmes for next winter 2017-18.

Crystal, part of the TUI group, goes to 126 destinations in 13 countries, offers departures from 23 UK airports, St Pancras and Ashford rail stations and will send nearly 200,000 skiers and snowboarders to over 1100 properties and almost 50 chalets this forthcoming winter. Inghams, part of the Hotelplan group, features 91 resorts across eight countries and departures from 21 UK airports.

Huge Snowfalls in New Zealand

The recent spate of snowy weather in much of New Zealand has been ratcheted up another notch with huge snowfalls at many of the country's ski areas over the first half of the weekend.

Ski areas reported up to 60cm of snow in 24 hours, with most getting at least 30cm and several now have base depths of 2m+

Squaw Valley Ends 2016-17 Ski season After 200 Days of Operations

Squaw Valley in California has announced that its operations last Saturday, July 15th was the last day of its very long 2017-18 ski season.

The ski area by Lake Tahoe in the US had said in the spring that it intended to stay open for as long as it could in 2017 opening for snowsports on Saturdays in the sumer amd potentially in to autumn leading to media speculation of an 'unending ski season' continuing in to the start of winter 2017-18.

Eurostar Ski Tickets on Sale from Wednesday (19 July 2017)

Tickets for Eurostar services direct from London and South East England to the French Alps for the 2017-18 season will go on sale on Wednesday, July 19th.

Typically there's a rush to buy tickets at the best prices for peak periods such as New Year and the February school holidays on the day that tickets become available.

Ski Holidays to Iran in 2018

A British tour operator is offering guided ski tours to a number of ski areas in Iran next winter.

Mountain Heaven, better known for organising ski holidays in the French Alps up to now, will organise two tours in March 2018.

Company director Nick Williams, who visited Iranian ski areas in 2016 after the UN sanctions were lifted, had planned to offer holidays to the Islamic Republic, famous for its high mountains and light powder snow last winter but was hampered by admin issues.

Will you still be skiing on your 100th birthday???

What do you do if you love skiing and you turn 100 on the 5th of July? Head up to Snowbird in Utah, of course, and get in a few turns!

That's what George Jedenoff did last week, as he joined the '100+ Ski Club'. There was just enough snow to thread a few turns together.

‘Mother of all Snow Storms’ Heading For New Zealand

(Calm before the storm? Mt Dobson earlier today)

A major snow storm is due to make landfall in New Zealand shortly. The storm is expected to last for up to four days and deposit up to a metre (40 inches) of snow on ski slopes on the South Island.

Latest Swiss Discount Pass Deal Sees Much Cheaper Skiing for under 25s in 4 Valleys

The latest volley in the battle to offer the best annual ski pass deal in Switzerland has been fired by the 4 Valleys lift company who have announced that under 25s will now be able to get a season pass for 400 Swiss Francs – about £325 - less than a third of the normal adult price (1,402 Francs). The price also applies to children (usual price over 800 Francs, although children born after 2011 so over 6 are free anyway).

Snowy Start to July in Australia

It has been a snowy start to July in Australia with ski areas reporting up to 30cm of fresh snow over the past few days.

The snow has come as a welcome relief after one of the two warmest Junes this century last month – June is when the Australian ski season officially gets going each year.

Oregon Ski Resort Re-opens For 4th of July Festivities

Mt Bachelor ski area in Oregon has re-opened for snowsports for just three days, over the American Independence Day holiday period.

The centre decided it had had so much snow last winter it was able to re-open several intermediate-level runs at the top of its ski area, served by the Summit Express quad.

Huge Snowfalls in New Zealand

There have been some big snowfalls in New Zealand over the past 24 hour, particularly welcomed by areas like Rainbow and Treble Cone that had delayed opening after a too warm and dry June in their party of the country.

Roads to Mt Cook were blocked by snow this morning and the Ohau Snow Field, pictured above, which opened on schedule this morning, had a great first day with a reported 47cm of fresh snow.
