Fresh Snow in the Alps

After more than a month of very warm temperatures in Central Europe which brought double-digit heat to many of the glaciers in the Alps, more unsettled weather has brought torrential rain to Alpine valleys, but also some fresh snow on high slopes around the 3,000m mark, including some that are open for summer skiing and boarding. This has meant, briefly, fresh summer snow for some.

Jet2 Add New Ski Flight from Stansted, Offers £1 Ski Carriage as Intro Offer

Hot on the heels of news of new ski flight routes from BA, Crystal, Easy Jet and Ryanair; as well as the announcement of a new Norwegian airlines transatlantic service from Gatwick to Denver next winter which is already driving down fares on that route, Jet2 have announced they're launching a new twice weekly service from Stansted to Lyon in France.

New Flights from Exeter, Doncaster Sheffield and Luton To Chambéry

Chambéry airport is one year in to a (very) long term multi-million Euro upgrade programme and passengers going through the airport are already starting to notice improvements according to its main user, Crystal Holidays, who have analysed customer feedback.

British Airways adds new Ski Flights

As we start to look at next winter, British Airways has announced two new ski routes and additional flights from Heathrow; with many seats priced under £40.

New Heathrow flights to Grenoble will depart on Saturdays (from December 2) with fares starting from £39 each way. Skiers will also be able to reach the Italian slopes via Turin from just £40 each way.

Snow in Lapland For The Start of Summer

The Finnish resort of Saariselka has reported fresh snow this morning, the official start of summer.

A spokesperson for the resort said, "it's a typical Lappish summer."

Saariselka re-opened for three days of skiing at the start of June, after being closed since the end of the 16-17 season for barely a month, following heavy snow on top of a still deep base, however no fresh plans to re-open have been announced as yet following this morning's dusting.

As Days Start To Shorten, French 2017 Summer Ski Season Underway

It's midsummer and the summer ski season in France has got underway after the country got through five weeks without an operating ski area.

Val d'Isere's Glacier du Pisaillas opened for summer snowsports last week as the road to and through the pass was opened.

Big Snow in South America, Too Warm in NZ

It's a tale of two continents as we approach the shortest day and the start of winter 2017 in the southern hemisphere.

After a universally 'good' start to the 2017 season with resorts opening early in late May in South America and early June in Australia, and even some good snowfalls in southern Africa, this week sees the first reports of a delayed opening day – in New Zealand, whilst in South America there are reports of up to 60cm of snow in the last 24 hours at ski areas in Chile.

New World Record set for 100m wearing ski boots

Two staff memberss from ski boot fitting specialists Profeet have set new world records for the fastest 100m while wearing ski boots.

Guinness World Records confirmed that Max Willcocks is now the new fastest male over 100m. His time of 14.09 seconds was significantly faster than the previous record of 17.65 set in 2015 by German Andre Ortolf.

June Snowfall in California

California's two 'still-open-since-last-November' ski areas Mammoth and Squaw Valley reported fresh snowfall yesterday. Snowfall in June is not unheard of but quite rare, and the snow also fell on many closed ski areas across Western North America at least as far as Utah where Alta posted video of heavy snowfall.

Ski Resorts Open For Season This Weekend On Five Continents

Ski area are opening over the next 24 hours in South America, Africa, Australia, Europe and North America.

In the southern hemisphere the 2017 ski season is really getting started after around 10 areas opened early over the past few weeks, in the northern hemisphere it's centres in Europe and North America re-opening for summer glacier skiing.

New £170m redevelopment project for Val d’Isère

Val d'Isère has announced one of the largest building projects seen in the French Alps over the past 20 years.

Work on Le Coin de Val, a giant €200m (£170m) redevelopment of the heart of the village, will begin this autumn. The project is a partnership between Val d'Isère's Town Hall and local architect Jean-Charles Covarel.

Finnish Ski resort to Re-Open After Early June Snow

Saariselkä in northern Finland has announced plans to re-open this weekend after the snow kept falling in late May and early June (webcam, image above taken this morning).

The ski area located 20 minutes from Ivalo airport in Finnish Lapland will re-open cross country and downhill skiing this Thursday, June 8th for three days until Saturday June 10th.

Lapland in Northern Finland has always been a big seller for the leading British tour operators. Although it falls under the radar of many skiers looking for big ski areas, which it doesn't have, many are drawn there by the wide range of 'Arctic experiences' such as dog sledding, reindeer safaris and snowmobiling - as well as the chance to meet Santa of course.

Mammoth To Offer Skiing in August For First time in 22 Years

Mammoth ski area in California has become the second ski area in the state to offer skiing in to August, it's the first time the resort has offered August skiing since 1995, the only other time it has.

The decision follows huge snowfalls this winter which saw the base depth at Mammoth near 30 feet/9 metres for much of the season, by far the deepest in the world – the snow depth remains at over 22 feet/6.7 metres up top with nine feet/2.7 metres at resort level and Mammoth has the biggest ski area currently open of the half dozen US ski centres still open for snowsports in June.
