Australian Ski Area To Open For 2017 Season Early

An Australian ski area has announced plans to open for the 2017 season a week early after heavy snow hit ski areas in the south east of the country in the last 24 hours.

The southern hemisphere's largest ski area in terms of uplift, Perisher in New South Wales, has announced it will open some terrain next weekend (June 3rd) because of the snow and low temperatures which have allowed the Vail-owned centre to run its snowmaking systems at full blast too. Perisher has had 20cm of fresh snow cover – a very big snowfall by Australian standards.

2017 Southern Hemisphere Ski Season Starts Early

The 2017 ski season has got underway in South America after big May-snowfalls.

In a repeat of 2016, El Colorado in Chile opened at the weekend around a month ahead of the planned mid-June opening date, due to all the snow which feel at the start of last week– which at some resorts totalled around 90cm/three feet of snow in the equivalent of a November snowfall in the Northern Hemisphere.

Heavy Snow in New Zealand as 2017 Season Nears

There's been heavy snowfall in New Zealand where the 2017 ski season is due to begin in less than two weeks' time.

The snow had been ongoing through the last few days of last week on the South Island and many areas have not yet measured snowfall totals but so far reports of 'up to 50cm' have come in with The Remarkables ski area posting the biggest number.

South American Resorts May Open Early For 2017 Season

Some South American ski areas may open for the 2017 season nearly a month early after up to 50cm of snow fall at the start of this week.

Ski centres in Argentina and Chile traditionally open in mid-June, this year most scheduling the weekend of 17/18th June as opening day, however thanks to all the fresh snow some of the smaller centres which are not reliant on large numbers of temporary workers, may open in the next week.

Heavy Pre-2017-Season Snow in Southern Africa

There's been heavy snowfall in Southern Africa ahead of the 2017 ski season.

Afriski in Lesotho (pictured above today) and Tiffindell in South Africa have both reported up to 30cm of natural snowfall in the past 36 hours.

Afriski, which is due to open in three weeks' time on June 8th, reports the access road in to the centre is currently closed.

Crews Battle To Open Road To Italian Summer Ski Area

Road crews in the Italian Alps are reported to be battling to open the famous Stelvio Pass road in Italy.

The crews want to get the road open in part so that skiers and boarders can reach the slopes above of Italy's only remaining summer ski area when it opens on the final weekend of May.

Ischgl To Add New Lift Featuring Music Stars

Ischgl is one of half-a-dozen Austrian a ski areas that seems to spend at least €10m on a luxurious new lift every summer and 2017 is no exception with a €12 million chairlift under construction, as well as a big spend on snowmaking upgrades.

The new state-of-the-art Doppelmayr six-seat chairlift will have all the bells and whistles but will also have a unique novelty that only Ischgl could deliver – images of many of the pop and rock stars who have performed over the years at the resorts famous 'Top of the Mountain' concerts at the beginning and end of its five month long ski season.

Petition started to start a Sunday train service to the Alps

Ski train specialists Snowcarbon have started a petition to start a new Sunday train service to the Alps.

They ask why there no Sunday Ski Train yet as the direct daytime Eurostar Ski Train, which runs every Saturday from London to the Tarentaise region of the French Alps, is now so popular that at February half term it sells out within hours of going on sale.

Resort With Longest Season Closes For Season, Re-opening October 6th

Ruka ski area in Lapland, Finland which claims to have the longest ski season of any non-glacier ski area will close its slopes today for winter 2016-17.

But it has already decided it will re-open in just under 5 months time on October 6th and to help be sure of that it has stock-piled huge amounts of snow to spread on the slopes for the start of next winter, as pictured above this morning.

La Grave Gets New Owners

A long running battle to save one of France's best known and – particularly by advanced skiers and boarders – most loved ski areas appears to have been won.

The SATA company which runs the lifts at Alpe d'Huez will take over operations at its smaller neighbour, La Grave, from 15th June onwards, on a 30 year lease.

More May Powder Alarms in the Alps

Social media is filling up with pictures and videos from closed-for-the-season ski resorts that are continued to be dumped on with May snow following the snowy latter half of April.

For many the sight of resorts getting lots of snow now after the dry start to the season at the end of 2016 is just a little ironic.

US Resort Announces Plan To Continue Ski Season 'Indefinitely'

Squaw Valley resort in California (Pictured above this January), which had already announced plans to stay open for skiing to the 4th of July weekend for the fourth time in its history, has now confirmed it will continue to open for skiing and boarding, on Saturdays, 'indefinitely.' After huge snowfalls last winter it seems likely this means the centre will operate right through to the planned start of the 2017-18 ski season in November.

London Ski Show Tickets Go On Sale

'Early bird' Tickets for the 2017 London Ski and Snowboard Show, the UK's only remaining ski show, have gone on sale. Bookings for a slot on the ice rink at the show are also available for reservation!

Organised by The Daily Telegraph and to be staged at Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park, London, from Thursday October 26th to Sunday 29th, the four-day event includes exhibitor stands, food and drink stalls, live snow sports demonstrations, comedy and music, as well as talks with famous athletes.

May Snow At Still Open Alpine Resorts

More ski areas closed at April 30th or May 1st leaving only around 20 open (fairly evenly divided between Europe and North America) as we move in to May, but ski centres in the Alps that have stayed open have been rewarded by more fresh snow in the first 24 hours of the month.
