Snow in Australia

Published : 27-Apr-2017 08:17

Australian ski slopes were coated in snow yesterday and temperatures are still well below freezing at most areas, variously reported at -3 to -5C.

(Pictured: Australia's Hotham above, Thredbo below, earlier today)

The Australian ski season traditionally kicks off on the first or second weekend of June, the 'Queen's birthday' long weekend back holiday there …but often there is little or no snow to ski on, with the season often not really getting going until later in June or even July.

Has anyone tried pond-skimming in a ski resort?

Published : 19-Apr-2017 12:57

It's that time of the year when ski resorts dig out some snow, fill it with water and invite you to ski over it as fast as possible. Will you sink or will you skim?

Have you ever tried it?

Here are a few of the resorts offering it this week:

Fresh Easter Snowfall in the Alps

Published : 17-Apr-2017 10:11

There's been fresh snow for Easter in the Alps, with the biggest accumulations reported in Western Austria and Eastern Switzerland so far.

More than half of ski areas have now closed for the season or will do later today so the fresh snow may be seen as an end-of-season-onus or perhaps too-little-too-late at areas that have struggled to offer good conditions during a largely dry, warm and sunny April to date.

Aspen Buys Intrawest

Published : 11-Apr-2017 09:12

Although the North American ski industry has long since got used to groups of ski resorts coming under the ownership of one corporation, and in recent years often that corporation being Colorado's Vail Resorts, it comes as more of a surprise that Vail's long-rime fellow big-name Colorado resort, Aspen, is this time the buyer.

Fresh April Snow on Alpine Glaciers

Published : 05-Apr-2017 08:41

As might be expected for this time of year, the best snowfall of the past few days has been falling on Europe's glaciers.

This is good news for altitude resorts that have another month of the season left through top early May – such as glacier 3000 near Gstaad and Tignes and Chamonix in France, all of which have reported 20-40cm of fresh snow on higher slopes, but even better news for ski areas that stay open to June or July.
