Four More Ski Areas Open For 17-18 Season this Weekend

Four more ski areas have announced they'll be opening for their 2017-18 ski seasons this weekend, on Saturday, September 30th.

Tignes will kick off the French season when the lifts start turning again on the Grand Motte glacier. Other than a week of operations at les 2 Alpes at the end of October it is expected to be the only French ski area open until mid-November.

Tour operator Inghams have launched an unusual promotion, they're giving a £125 holiday discount to people booking a ski holiday this winter if their name is Linda.

There are a few strings attached, the main one being that to qualify for your discount you need to stay at the company's new Chalet Linda in the famous Austrian resort of Kitzbühel.

Snow in North America as 2017-18 Season Start Nears

There's been varying amounts of fresh snowfall across Western North America over the past week with the hoped-for start of the 2017-18v season less than three weeks away.

Ski areas from Alberta to New Mexico reported up to 40cm of fresh snowfall – although in most cases it was less than 10cm/4 inches so far. The big winner was Marmot Basin in Alberta which posted the 40cm figure at mid-mountain.

More Heavy Snow in the Alps

There's been more heavy snowfall on high Alpine slopes over the past five days meaning that the first three weeks of September – the final three weeks of the astronomical autumn – have seen more snowy days than sunny days at some resorts.

The latest snowfall has brought unexpected deep powder conditions to most of the 10 glacier ski areas that are now open for the 2017-18 ski season. Yesterday the Stubai Glacier, which only opened on Saturday, posted 25cm, of fresh snow, whilst the Pitztal, also only open a few days, said it had had 30cm overnight and posted the picture top.

SWISS Add More Flights This Winter

Swiss International Air Lines who prefer to be known simply as 'SWISS' are to offer London HeathrowSion again this winter. The flights are aimed at skiers and boarders heading to major Swiss ski resorts in the Valais including Zermatt, Verbier and Crans-Montana, which are much closer to Sion than Geneva.

More Flight Routes to the French Alps

Winter 2017-2018 sees the opening of new fewer than 13 brand new routes from across Britain into the airports that service the Northern Alps, Southern Alps and French Pyrenees. Grenoble and Chambéry airports are seeing the biggest jump in the number of flights.

Three More Glaciers Announce Season Opening This Weekend With Fresh Snow

Two Austrian glacier ski resorts, The Stubai and The Pitztal, have announced they'll open for the 2017-18 ski season this weekend, following Solden last weekend. They'll be joined by Val Senales in Italy which opens this Friday.

The good news follows a second successive weekend of heavy snow on high slopes in the Alps, if not quite as extensive this weekend as the previous one. The snow was still falling in parts of the Alps this morning too, with Tignes posting the image above.

Solden Announces Saturday Opening As More Summer Snow Forecast

The Austrian glacier resort of Solden has announced it will open a run on its glacier tomorrow (Saturday September 9th) marking the start of its 2017-18 ski season.

The announcement comes as forecasters are predicting a second wave of late summer snow to sweep across the Alps this weekend, with up to 35cm forecast a week after a similar wave of snow showers brought up to 40cm of snow to high glacier slopes in Europe – and powder conditions to the few areas that are open.

New 6-Seater Chairlift for Davos This Winter

A new 6-seater chairlift will open above Davos this winter is a major upgrade to the Furka T Bar which was built in 1972.

The new mile-long chairlift, in the Parsenn sector will climb 380 metres, transport 2,500 people per hour and shorten the trip from the Gruobenalp to the Parsennfurgga by around 5 minutes.

Giant Indoor Ski Centre Planned for South Wales

One of the world's largest indoor snow centres yet could be built in South Wales if ambitious plans for a new complex at Merthyr continue to move forward.

A company called Marvel Ltd (but not believed to be any relation to the famous comic strip/movie franchise) has acquired a former colliery site and is now moving forwards with its ambitions to build a multi-adventure sports activity and leisure centre, complete with hotels and a residential property development.

Huge Snowfalls in Australia

Australia is seeing its third, and biggest-yet, major snowfall in the past five weeks.

Up to 1.3 metres (52 inches) of snow has fallen so far at the country's ski areas in the past 72 hours and the storm is still going strong.

Thredbo has reported the biggest snowfalls but all of the leading areas have had at least a metre of snow.

Big Snowfalls Forecast for the Alps For First Weekend of September

After a long hot summer in mainland Europe the weather finally seems to be settling down and some big snowfalls are forecast over the coming three days for higher slopes in the Alps.

This is great news for the continent's glaciers as the above-average temperatures for much of the summer has largely removed snow cover from most of them, causing several to temporarily close whilst they are unable to offer snow sports.

Perisher Announces Extended Ski Season to October

Australia's largest ski area, the Vail Resorts owned Perisher, has announced they're extending their 2017 ski season by a week to Sunday 8th October describing winter 2017 as "the best for five years."

After mixed conditions at the start of the season in June and July there were two very big snowfalls at Australia's leading ski areas in August, colloquially dubbed "The Blizzard of Oz" and "The Blizzard of Oz 2" and a third major snowstorm is now hitting the country expecting to bring up to 45cm of snow to Aussie ski centres by Monday for the start of September.
