Scottish Ski Area To Test Run all Weather Snowmaking System

Published : 12-Oct-2017 11:29

Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore is to test run an all-weather snowmaking system this autumn.

The Sottish ski centre has reached an agreement with TechnoAlpin to try out one of their Snowfactory units.

All-weather snowmaking machines make their snow within a large refrigerated articulated unit and then spread it on the slopes ready-made. It still thaws like normal snow when temperatures are above freezing but for many of the centres that already use them temperatures often hover around freezing so thawing Is slow, but the weather is not consistently cold enough for snowmaking and natural snowfall is too unreliable.

Quad chairlifts, Dry slopes, New Clubhouses and All-Weather Snowmaking For Scottish Slopes

Published : 09-Oct-2017 02:05

Scottish ski areas appear to be coming out fighting after one of the worst ski seasons there for decades last winter, as the snow more-or-less failed to arrive all season.

Two ski areas —Cairngorm and Glencoe – have shown an interest in acquiring Snow Factory all-weather snowmaking systems. Glencoe seems to be the more active in terms of actually getting hold of one, launching a crowd-funding campaign with a £200,000 target towards the cost. So far it has reached £40,000. Glencoe say being able to make snow in plus temperatures would be a game changer for Scottish skiing.

Snow has been falling on both sides of the equator with the fifth 20cm+ snowfall since the start of August on glaciers in the Alps, and the latest big snowfall in New Zealand.

Snow in early autumn is fairly normal in the Alps, and not wholly unusual in New Zealand as the country approaches 'mid-Spring' but it is quite rare for posted snowfall tallies to be the same amount on the same day.
