Pippa Middleton launches #Ski2Paralympics from DSUK

Pippa Middleton – patron of Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) - launched a new campaign in London this week to help raise funds for the British Paralympic team heading to PyeongChang in March 2018.
DSUK – together with Crystal Ski - is challenging skiers and boarders to ski the equivalent distance from London to Pyeongchang - a distance of 5550 miles – with their #Ski2Paralympics campaign.

Powdair May Not Take Off

A start up airline which planned to launch services between the UK and Belgium and the Swiss Valais airport of Sion, starting in as fortnight's time, now says they,
"…need to secure at least £3 million to operate this season and at least £1 million by the end of this week, in order to operate a reduced but efficient flight schedule this season."

Scottish Ski Season Starts Tomorrow (Tues Nov 28 20187)

Glencoe ski area has announced that it will open for the ski season tomorrow, running three lifts.
The news came after the Highlands enjoyed a cold weekend with lots of snowfall. Unusually for recent years, the forecast is for temperatures to stay cold in to December with more snowfall expected.

Alps Get Snow for Fourth Successive November Sunday

Resorts in The Alps reported snow – in some places heavy - for the fourth successive weekend in November, giving a clean streak for November weekends and making this the snowiest Nov for quite a few years.
There are of course, some terms and conditions to the above statement – the best of the snow has, as all month and last, been on higher slopes with lower slopes so far seeing little natural snowfall.

British Silver at Stubai World Cup

There was good news for Team GB's Park and Pipe division as they scored their third World Cup podium of the season. Katie Summerhayes achieved her best Ski Slopestyle World Cup result in almost four years, placing second in Stubai, Austria yesterday.

Open Terrain Expanding in the Alps

The ski areas with currently the biggest open terrain keeps changing in the Alps as resorts re-open for the new season with bigger ad bigger areas open on day one.
For the past three months of summer and autumn glacier skiing the biggest area open was around 25km but then just over a week ago Obergurgl opened with 99km of terrain, believed to be much more than any other open area at the time.

4500 Attended Opening Weekend at Pyrenean Resort, More Opening This Weekend

Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees opened a week early for the 17-18 ski season last weekend and the resort, one of the country's largest, say the 4,500 skiers and boarders visited to enjoy the snow. 30km of slopes divided between 28 runs were open with early season snow depths up to 50cm.

Niseko Opening With 100cm of Powder and Two New Quads

Japan's famous Niseko ski area has announced it will open for the 2017-18 ski season this Thursday 23rd November.
The resort has had heavy snowfall over the past week that has brought the resort's snow base up to 1m and another 80cm of snowfall is forecast before opening day.

Alps Get Snow for Third Successive November Sunday

There were heavy snowfalls on some higher slopes in the Alps again over the weekend.
Glaciers in Austria and Germany reported up to 60cm (two feet) of fresh snow and the snow fell down to lower elevations too, particularly in the central and Eastern Alps.

More Big Snowfalls in Northwestern North America

There has been a further spate of heavy snow showers in northwestern North America with ski areas in California, BC and Alberta reporting up to 90cm of snow in 72 hours.
The storm has about passed in the last few hours in most areas meaning that a number of resorts will soon be waking up to deep snow conditions.

More Big Ski areas Opening Early for Season, This Weekend

Several more big name ski areas have decided to open this Friday or Saturday because of good snow conditions in their locations.
In Switzerland Arosa and Wengen say they'll be opening some runs early and in Austria Saalbach and Zell am See will be doing the same.

Courchevel Opens For Free Skiing Today

French ski resort Courchevel is opening early but for one day only – today!
In a repeat of a similar initiative last winter, the famous 3 Valleys ski area is running its lifts free-of charge for anyone wanting to hit the slopes.
"As a result of the big snowfall on Sunday night and the sunshine scheduled for Wednesday, conditions are too perfect, we cannot remain closed! If you're in the area, you are welcome to join us," a resort spokesperson said.

The leading Spanish ski area of Baqueira Beret says it will open early for the ski season this weekend, on Saturday November 18th, following, "heavy snowfall and very cold weather in recent weeks which has allowed for lots of snow production."

Val Thorens Receives Further Big Snowfalls Ahead of Season Opening This Coming Weekend

You would need to go back some years to find quite such a promising pre-season snowfall start to the Alps at Val Thorens.
Following a big snowfall a week ago, there's been more heavy snowfall over the past 48 hours so rather than the issue of making sure machines have made enough snow to open, this year it is looking like lifts and roads may have to be dug out to open.

Ormerod Wins Silver at Season's First Snowboard Big Air World Cup

GB Park and Pipe snowboarder Katie Ormerod (20) has claimed second place at the opening World Cup of the season for Snowboard Big Air in Milan.
After a phenomenal season in 2016-17 where she finished second overall in the World Cup standings, Ormerod continued to impress in Milan, throwing down her cab 900 mute and backside 720 mute.

Austria's Silvretta ski area has opened today, immediately announcing a 'powder alarm' for 22cm of snow in the past 24 hours.
The ski area, which is running its Zamang and Panorama lifts to access the slopes has announced near perfect conditions for its opening weekend.

First Ski Areas Opening in Dolomites For 2017-18

[b]Good news from The Dolomites overnight – two ski regions in the giant Dolomiti Superski pass network have announced they'll be opening this weekend – December 10th – 11th.[/b]
The news comes after the Dolomites enjoyed some of the same healthy snowfalls the alps did at the start of this week, and there's also been cold weather for snowmaking.

First Ski Area Opening in Pyrenees For 2017-18

The first ski area to open in the Pyrenees for the new ski season has announced it will start running its lifts tomorrow, Saturday 11th November.
Porte Puymorens in the French Pyrenees reported its first pre-season snowfall back in mid-September and first turned on its snowmaking machines on 26th October but it seems to be the heavy snowfall in the Pyrenees last weekend that have led to the decision to open early.

Killington First to Open in North America’s East

Killington in Vermont has announced it will open for the season later today at 9.30am EST.
The resort, the largest in the Eastern US, made the announcement of today's opening yesterday, shortly after two other ski areas in the region announced they'd be opening on Saturday.

Canadian Ski Areas Opening Early

After Mt Norquay at Banff kicked off Canada's ski season last Friday a few days earlier than hoped, almost half a dozen more Canadian ski areas have announced they'll be opening too.
The good start to the season has been helped by low temperatures (-20C in Banff yesterday) and some abundant snowfalls (92cm/over 3 feet reported at Kicking Horse at the weekend)

A major snowstorm has so far deposited up to 80cm of snow on ski slopes in the Alps and more snow is expected to fall all this week.
About 25 ski areas already open in the Alps have very deep snow to clear from lifts and access roads this morning. For example at the Kitsteinorn glacier pictured above.

Major Snow Forecast for the Alps this Weekend

The latest of what seem to have been almost weekly snowstorms to hit the alps over the past two months is forecast to start blowing on tomorrow and for most areas be dumping the most snow on Sunday.
Already open resorts are seeing forecasts ranging from 30-70cm of snow for the next 72 hours, whilst in the longer term, some resorts say they expect the snow to keep falling through the first half of next week too.

Canada's 2017-18 Ski Season Gets Underway As Big Snowfall Buries Slopes

There have been big snowfalls in Canada and some areas in the US over the past 48 hours, particularly the past 24 hours.
Ski resorts in Alberta, Wyoming and BC have reported up to 45cm (18 inches) of snow so far and with the snowfall expected to continue through the weekend some re expecting over a metre of snow by Monday.
