Kent Ski Slope Closed Due To Too Much Snow

One of the UK's leading dry ski slopes has had to close as there's been too much snowfall in the area from the so called 'beast from the east' weather system.

The 200m long ski slope at Chatham Ski & Snowboard Centre closed yesterday when snow in the centre's car park meant that a requirement to ensure access for emergency services could not be guaranteed.

It’s Very Cold In The Alps

Whilst Britain's media goes in to melt down over 'The Beast From The East' ski resorts in mainland Europe have been warning temperatures may drop to as low as -30C over the next 48 hours.

The 'Siberian cold snap' is in fact affected most of Europe, with snow as far south as Rome and some very low temperatures, reportedly dropping to below -40C in Finnish Lapland on Sunday.

Norwegian Ski Area To Make Helmet Wearing Compulsory

Leading Norwegian ski area Hovden have announced they'll be making the wearing helmets of compulsory for people using their ski slopes for skiing or snowboarding from next season (2018-19).[/b]

The resort says the move is for safety reasons rather than due to an insurance requirement. They have not said what punishment will be made to anyone disobeying the ruling.

Fresh Snow in Switzerland Temporarily Cuts Off Zermatt for 3rd Time

[b]Swiss ski areas are celebrating what is for many the second healthy snowfall of February, with resorts in the Valais canton reporting up to 70cm of snow in the past 48 hours.

Among the bigger accumulations reported so far were 46cm in the Lotschental, 40cm at Arolla, 33cm at Laax, 25cm at Verbier and 20cm at Zermatt.

Heavy Snow in Austria, Switzerland and parts of France

There's been heavy snowfall for the start of the week in parts of the Alps. Most regions have had some fresh snow but some ski areas in Switzerland have reported up to 50cm of snow in the past 24 hours. For ski areas in Eastern France and Western Austria it has been up to 25cm in the past 24 hours. It's still snowing in many areas.

Ski Resort in French Pyrenees Forced To Close On Busiest Weekend of Season

Porte Puymorens in the French Pyrenees has announced it is having to close today, Saturday, February 10th due to heavy snow and strong winds.

Since the start of February the Pyrenees have seen some of the heaviest snowfalls in Europe with resorts on the French side seeing the heaviest snow with up to 105m in 72 hours reported a week ago.

Colorado (Almost) Fully Open Finally After Fresh Big Snowfalls

An increasing number of ski areas in Colorado have finally fully opened after the latest round of snowfalls earlier this week.

The region had little natural snowfall compared to normal and temperatures too warm for snowmaking at times for much of December and January, leaving many resorts unable to open much terrain.

Snow Forecast for First of 2018 February Half Term Holiday Weekends Tomorrow

Snow is expected to start falling in the Alps overnight tonight ahead of the first arrivals for the peak half-term holiday period.

Current forecasts are for relatively modest accumulations on Saturday of perhaps 4-8cm and then progressively bigger falls on Sunday and Monday.

50cm of Fresh Snow in 48 Hours in The Pyrenees

Resorts in the Pyrenees are celebrating healthy snowfalls over the weekend, which are ongoing at present.

Grandvalira in Andorra, the region's biggest ski area with 210km of runs, is one of those to have reported 50cm of snow over the past 48 hours.

Heavy Snow For The Eastern Alps

There's been considerable snowfall in Eastern Austria and Slovenia, as well as in the Italian Apennine mountains as forecast models predicted.

Accumulations of up to a metre in 24 hours were reported over the weekend. Of resorts in British tour op travel brochures, Nassfeld in Carinthia, Austria, reported 60cm (two feet) of snow in 24 hours at the start of the weekend. Bad Kleinkirchheim nearby reported 65cm over 48 hours.

Scottish Ski Ticket Sales Overtake Last Season Total Already

Ski-Scotland, a marketing group which represents the five ski areas in the Scottish Highlands, says they had already had more skier visits by the end of January than they did all of last season.

Numbers are also reported to be way ahead of the previous season (2015-16) for the start of February and hot on the heels of the very successful winter of 2014-15.

Snowy Start to February in the Alps

Resorts across the Alps are reporting fresh snow falling at present, after a mostly dry and sunny final week of January.

Accumulations of up to 30cm (a foot) have been reported in the Alps since yesterday.

Currently the snowfall is not expected to be on the scale of some of the dramatic January falls and most of it should be finished by the end of Friday, tomorrow, so hopefully transfers on Saturday and Sunday should be clear.
