Snowy Easter Ahoy

It's looking like an increasingly snowy Easter weekend and start of April in the Alps.

Unusually, there's little sign of spring and bases are still building as ski seasons reach their final week at many resorts.

Thursday saw dozens of powder alarms issued by ski resorts across the Alps, particularly in the West, with resorts reporting 20 – 30m of fresh snow in the 24 hours since Wednesday.

Major Expansion of La Rosiere’s Ski Area Next Winter

French resort La Rosiere, part of the international Espace San Bernardo ski area which crosses the border to link with Italy's La Thuile ski area is spending 15 million Euros on expanding the ski area next winter, according to a report from tour operator Peak Retreats (www.peakretreats.co.uk).

EasyJet Announce Winter 2018-19 Flight Seats To Go on Sale Next Month

EasyJet say that seats on their flights next winter will go on sale in two phases during April.

Flight ticket prices for peak periods like New Year and February Half term tend to climb rapidly as soon as the tickets are released and early bookers try to secure the best deal for the best flight times.

Swedish Ski Centre To Get 10m Extra Vertical Thanks To Corporate Rock Donation

A small Swedish ski centre is to get 10m of extra height thanks to the donation of 100,000 tonnes of rock by a Swedish division of Amazon.

Amazon Web Services are building a new HQ in Stockholm, 120km East of the little Vilsta ski hill in Eskilstuna.

Russian Skiers See Red (or at least Orange…)

Ski resorts in large swathes of Eastern Europe are reporting snow with an orange-pinkish hue falling, transforming the colour of the landscape from its normal white to something more akin to the popular image of the Martian surface.

Ski areas in Russia and Georgia are amongst those reporting the phenomena, including the ski areas that hosted events at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics (pictured).

Gondola Cabin Falls From Lift Cables in French Alps - No Injuries

A gondola cabin fell from lift cables at Par Loup resort in the southern French Alps – there were no injuries and an investigation is underway as to how this could have happened.

No one was in the cabin at the time and no one was underneath it, according to reports.

Big Snowfall to end March in the Alps

Forecasts are increasingly pointing towards a snowy end to the month in the Alps with up to 60cm (two feet) of snow forecast to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at some areas.

Most areas in the western Alps are expected to get 30-45cm (12-18 inches) on higher slopes.

Gudauri Ski-lift Accident Caused By Human Error

Georgian state media have reported that the chairlift accident that went viral on social media and on news pages around the world on March 16th was caused by human error.

Video posted online showed a chairlift at the country's Gudauri ski area operating in reverse and flinging skiers off the lift backwards with centrifugal force as it went backwards at apparently high speed through the bottom lift station.

The second 'Everest in the Alps' Challenge attracted around 30 participants, including Channel 4 presenter Phil Spencer of 'Location, Location, Location' and other TV shows.

'Warmer Snow' Falling in Colorado

A new study has found that snow can fall at warmer temperatures in Colorado than almost anywhere else in the world.

The study, by a group from the University of Colorado, discovered that snow could fall to the ground on Colorado's ski slopes at up to 4 degrees Celcius. Previously it had been thought that temperatures needed to be at freezing point or below for snow to survive down to ground level.

Sierra Nevada extends season into May 2018

Europe's southernmost ski resort, Sierra Nevada, has extended its ski season by a week to run until May 6th 2018.

Sierra Nevada wrote:The ski and mountain resort of Sierra Nevada will extend the winter season 2017/18 until May 6, a week longer than initially expected, due to the good snow conditions derived from the successive storms during the first two weeks of March.

Small Swedish Ski Area to Become International Destination Ski Resort

A small ski area is set to become a leading international resort according to its owners, SkiStar, who have just announced another jump in profits.

The currently internationally little known Hundfjället ski area in Sweden is part of the larger Sälen ski area and SkiStar say they'll be spending€10m on it this summer, with much of the money going on what they say will be Scandinavia's most modern 8-seater express chairlift yet, as well as on new ski runs and expanded snow-making facilities.

Smart Ski Will Talk to you About Your Skiing

Ski manufacturer Elan has demonstrated a prototype ski which analyses your performance and lets you know what it thinks of it via a Bluetooth connection to headphones you wear as you ski.

Elan's smart skis have sensors built in which analyse your skiing technique and lets you know how you might improve in real time as you ski, a company spokesperson says.

Val Thorens To Create ‘Escape Room’ in Cable Car

Val Thorens have announced that they'll be running a so-called 'escape room' in one of their cable cars from the Easter holidays inwards, the highest in Europe.

The escape room concept has swept the world in recent years, with players 'locked' in a room and required to solves a series of clues in order to be able to open the door and escape. Participants efforts are usually observed and assisted if required by an operator outside the room via an intercom or computer screen.

2m of Snowfall in 72 Hours in US West

Western North America is continuing to make up lost ground after the poor start to the 17-18 season with ore huge March snowfalls.

The Tahoe region is being particularly dumped on with Squaw Valley reporting 1m of snow in the past 24 hours, 2m in the past 72 hours and nearly 5m since the start of the month – several times the amount that fell in the first three months of the season.

Big Snowfalls in Eastern US

There have been huge snowfalls along the East Coast of North America over the past week – transforming snow conditions ahead of the Easter holidays.

Some ski areas in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont have reported yup to 60cm (two feet) of snowfall in 24 hours, and nearly four feet (120cm) of fresh snow in the past week.

Big White To Build New Quad Chairlift For 18-19

Ski resorts are starting to announce their spending plans for infrastructure improvements for the 2018-19 ski season.

Big White in British Columbia say they'll be making their biggest summer spend in 10 years this year with a raft of upgrades and improvements planned.

Ski resorts in California have received huge snowfalls from a major storm that has hit the Pacific-coast state.

After an exceptionally snowy winter 16-17 brought to a end a four year drought last season, this winter had been another largely warm, dry one in California's mountains until recently, and few areas had managed to open all their terrain.

Ski areas in the Southern Alps have been reporting big snowfall totals over the past 24 hours.

Resorts in the southern French Alps have posted some of the biggest snowfalls – up to 50cm in the past 24 hours – but some ski areas in Western Italy and Switzerland have posted up to 30cm of snowfall in the same period too.
