Southern Hemisphere Ski Season Starts Tomorrow

The southern hemisphere's 2018 ski season looks set to start tomorrow, May 31st, with New Zealand's Manganui Ski Area run by the Stratford Mountain Club likely to take first honours.

"We'll open tomorrow and be the first ski field in the country again. Our prep crew made great progress today and we are ready to operate the T bar and Learners tow tomorrow after the usual safety checks and de icing if required. Top Tow extremely unlikely to operate," the Club's Facebook page noted today.

New Zealand Ski Area To Start 2018 Season Early – This Saturday

Cardrona ski resort in New Zealand has announced it will be opening early for the southern hemisphere's 2018 ski season – this Saturday, 2nd June.

Ski areas in the country have received up to 70cm of snowfall in the past seven days and temperatures have stayed low allowing snowmaking systems to operate at capacity too, enabling top-to-bottom cover.

Last Ski Area Open for 17-18 in Eastern US Decides To Call It A Day After Weekend

[b]Killington in Vermont has said that the upcoming US Memorial Day Holiday weekend will be its last of the season for snowsports.

Killington is usually one of the first to open in Eastern North America in October or November and the last to close, making it in June for the first time in 15 years last season.

Tignes Announce 6 Week Summer Ski Season

Tignes have announced that they will open for summer skiing for just six weeks this summer. The formerly year-round ski area, which still claims to be open for snowsports at some point during 11 months of the year, says it will run its glacier ski lifts from 23rd June to 5th August.

Snow Bases Building in New Zealand as New Season Nears

A series of fronts has brought wild weather to New Zealand, including heavy snow on higher ground, ahead of the 2018 ski season which starts in just over two weeks' time.

Snow on Sunday to Tuesday brought reported accumulation totals of up to 45cm to South island resorts like Cardrona, whilst another resort, The Remarkables, reports that with snowmaking it now has a settled base of 40cm.

New Chairlift for 2018 Ski Season in Australia

The Australian 2018 ski season kicks off in just over a fortnight and one of the country's resorts will have a new quad chairlift in place for the start of the season.

Falls Creek will unveil its new high speed quad, the eagle Express, built by Leitner-Poma at a cost of $9M when the season starts on Saturday, 9th June.

Courchevel Méribel to Host 2023 Alpine World Championships

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has selected the resorts of Courchevel and Méribel in France to host the 2023 Alpine World Ski Championships.

At their international congress in Costa Navarino, Greece, the FIS chose the French bid ahead of a competing bid entered by Saalbach Hinterglemm in Austria, winning the vote 9-6.

Heavy Snowfall For mid-May in the Alps

It has been snowing heavily overnight with ski areas in France reporting up to 30cm (a foot) of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

Currently there are six glacier ski areas still open in the Alps, with Italy's Cervinia ski area now open at weekends-only in May. A seventh area, the Molltal glacier, ended its very long 17-18 ski season yesterday.

Weekend Snow Forecast on Three Continents

Snow is expected to fall in Australia, the Alps and in North America over the next 72 hours.

The snow is in fact already falling in Australia (Mt Buller pictured above earlier today), where the 2018 ski season is due to begin in 4 weeks' time. Ski areas in New South Wales and Victoria have reported up to 20cm of fresh snow so far, with forecasts point to as much as 50cm likely to be lying by Monday. Some excited skiers have already started hiking up hills in order to get in their first turns of 2018.

Val d'Isere Reports 17-18 Stats - Nearly 30 Feet of Snowfall

Val d'Isere has issued some stats on its 2017-18 ski season which ended last week.

The famous French resort reported it received 889cm (Just under 30 feet) of snowfall in total, more than half as much again as the five year average – 5.5 metres.

Last Day of the French 17-18 Ski Season

It's the last day of the 2017-18 ski season in France with Val Thorens, the last ski area in the country still operating its lifts, finishing its nearly six-month long ski season this afternoon. [/b]

Currently the resort still reports a 165 – 275cm base, with more than 70 of its 82 trails open

Kaprun’s Two Ski Areas to be Connected

Work is underway to connect Kaprun in Salzburgerland Austria's two ski areas – the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and the Maiskogel ski area – by ski lift for the start of winter 2019-20.

Work has begun on a 3km (nearly two mile) long 3S-type Doppelmayr gondola connection between the two ski areas.

Snow For May in the Alps

Alpine ski areas that are still open this week are likely to offer skiers fresh snow for the coming weekend - the last of the season for half-a-dozen ski areas including Tignes and Val Thorens.

Up to 40cm of snow in the past 24 hours has been reported with the year-round glacier ski slopes of the Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt reporting the biggest totals so far.

Record Number of Eastern US Resorts Stretch Season in to May

What may be a record number of US ski resorts have stretched their seasons in to May.

Snow was falling in Califiornia, Utah and the Midwest (with a dusting in the East) on April 30th and May 1st and it is this cold weather which led some ski areas to stay open to May 1st, and others to announce they'll be opening this coming weekend.

Summer Skiing in Les 2 Alpes Opens in June

If you need to get your skiing fix in this summer, then the Les 2 Alpes glacier opens from Saturday 23 June to Sunday 26 August 2018.

Snow is guaranteed, not just because it's super high at 3600m – offering a 400m vertical drop down to 3200m – but because since last autumn Deux Alpes Loisirs, the resort's ski lift company, took the dramatic step of installing snow cannons to preserve the glacier even in the most challenging conditions.
