Another New Quad Chairlift For Sun Peaks

Canada's Sun Peaks ski area have just started work on installing a new quad chairlift to enhance uplift capacity and skier flow in a key sector of their ski area, now Canada's second largest.

Work on the new Crystal chairlift, a Doppelymayr fixed grip quad, will take two summers to complete before the lift opens for winter 2020-21.

Six US Ski Areas Open for Independence Day, July 4th

It looks certain that at least six US ski areas will be open for skiing and boarding for the Independence Day holiday weekend which runs from next Thursday 4th July through to Sunday the 7th.

Colorado's Arapahoe Basin announced yesterday that it will be opening for Independence Day for the first time since 2011.

Ruka Begins 100 Day Countdown To Start of 2019-20 Season

With the Alps baking under sweltering heat, Finnish resort Ruka has announced that today marks just 100 days until the start of their 2019-20 ski season.

Thanks to snow farming, Ruka is pretty confident they'll be one of the first ski areas in the world without a glacier to open for the new season, and have set the date and time of 4th of October 2019 at 9:30pm for the new season kick off.

Europe's Oldest Ski Travel Company, Sold to One of the Youngest

Erna Low, believed to be the oldest still-trading UK ski tour operator, established in 1932, has been sold to one of the youngest, the university snowsports specialist NUCO Travel, founded just seven years ago, for an undisclosed sum.

Miss Erna Low, pioneer of the British ski holiday and creator of the British ski chalet party, founded her company in 1932. 87 years on, Erna Low Travel remains a leading ski specialist to the French Alps with a vast selection of apartments and hotels.

First Winter Olympics in Europe For Two Decades Heading to Italy

Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo and Milan will host the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Some snowsports will also be staged at the ski resorts of Bormio and Cortina.[b]

The decision was made this afternoon by a vote of 82 delegates at the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, choosing between Milan Cortina in Italy and Stockholm Are in Sweden.

Fresh Summer Snow for Full Start of French Glacier Ski Season

J2Ski are reporting between 7 and 15cm of fresh snowfall this weekend up on the glaciers as all three French summer ski areas open.

Val d'Isere opened a fortnight ago, but Tignes and Les 2 Alpes are scheduled to have opened for their summer ski seasons earlier today.

Ski areas in Argentina and Chile are gearing up for the start of their 2019 ski season.

Around 30 ski areas in the two country will open for their winter this weekend, although some will be opening terrain a few days before that – as early as tomorrow, Thursday 20th June.

National Schools Snowsport Week Returns For 2019

National Schools Snowsport Week – a special week when English school children are encouraged to try skiing or boarding - is back this month and kicks off next Monday, 24th June.

Organised by Snowsport England, this will be the fourth National Schools Snowsport Week, year and with over 3,500 young people taking PART, it is set to be the biggest yet.

Tignes opens the world’s largest and highest open-top aerial cable car

After more than three years' work, the Grande Motte cable car in Tignes is opening its new panoramic roof terrace and 360 degree views.

Designed in Switzerland by Garaventa AG, it will open for summer this weekend. In addition to the capacity of the two cabins, which can each accommodate 100 people and carry the equivalent of 1,000 people per hour in each direction, the new roof terrace can carry twenty people at a time.

Europe’s Spring Skiing Capital Prepares for Midsummer Re-opening

Sweden's Riksgränsen ski area will re-open for summer skiing and boarding this Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd June to see in the start of astronomical summertime.

Riksgränsen, located 200km north of the arctic Circle, has long been famous for having a ski season which doesn't begin until the start of meteorological spring at the beginning of March, as it is too cold and dark before then, and then offering skiing and boarding under the midnight sun from early May, when 24 hour daylight begins at its northerly latitude.

Andermatt Sedrun Disentis Swiss Ski Area Gets Another New Lift

Another part of the huge project to connect three ski resorts along the borders of the Swiss cantons of Graubünden and Uri has been completed.

The ski areas of Sedrun and Andermatt were connected in one direction in Easter 2018 after a five-year project and ten-year plan reached fruition and more than CHF 100 million invested in lifts and other ski area upgrades. The two-way connection opened in December.

2019 Ski-Season Re-Starts in Canada, France and Italy

Summer ski areas are opening in three countries in Europe and North America this weekend, just as the 2019 season gets underway in the southern hemisphere's Southern Africa, South America and New Zealand.

In France, where no ski areas have been open for five weeks, the small glacier ski area at Val d'Isere has opened for a five-week season. It will be joined by Tignes and Les 2 Alpes in a fortnight. The lifts are open from 7 am to noon daily.

New Zealand 2019 Ski Season Fully Underway

The 2019 ski season in New Zealand has got fully underway today with Mt Hutt opening as planned, the first ski area in the country to fully open.

It's a great start to winter there with heavy snowfalls over the past week giving top to bottom coverage. The resort had every run open including 2.5km of new terrain created over the southern hemisphere's summer.

Crystal Report More Ski Holiday Sales to Austria than France in 2018-19

The UK's largest ski holiday operator, Crystal Ski Holidays, are reporting they took more holiday booking to Austria than to France last winter.

The company report that 32% of all its bookings were to Austrian resorts, 30% to French centres, although French resort Val Thorens was their overall most popular destination resort.

Worlds 4th Biggest Ski Area Connected Up Next Winter

A new lift currently being built on the border between the Saalbach Hintereglemm ski area and the Schmittenhohe ski area of Zell am see will create Austria's latest biggest ski area and the fourth biggest linked ski area in the world.

The title of 'largest ski area in Austria' has closed several time over the past five years having previously been held for decades by the Skiwelt area. Currently the Arlberg region claims it with 305km of runs.

New Zealand 2019 Ski Season Under Way

[b]New Zealand's 2019 ski season has got underway today.

Whakapapa ski area, part of the Mt Ruapehu ski area on the North Island, opened its Happy Valley area which includes beginner slopes and snow fun play areas.

The resort uses all weather snowmaking machines to ensure there's enough snow to open early.
