London Ski Festival Sees 24% Jump in Visitor Numbers

The London Ski Festival, formerly the Ski Show, has reported a 24% jump in visitor numbers from last year.

The Show, which has been running for 45 years and was rebranded a 'Festival' this year is the only major show of its kind remaining in the UK and has shrunk from a 10 day event attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to Earls Court during its heyday in the pre-internet era of the 1980s, to a much more intimate affair staged over four days at an exhibition centre in Battersea Park now.

Aviemore Ski Area Operators Go Bust But Slopes Will Still Open This Winter

[b]The private operators of the publicly owned Cairngorm ski area near Aviemore in Scotland have gone in to administration today, but the centre's owners, who have recently invested £1m in a new snowmaking system, say it will operator this winter anyway.

Dolomiti Superski 18-19 Season Starts Tomorrow

Italy's huge Dolomiti Superski area will kick-off its 2018-19 winter season tomorrow, Friday 30 November, with around 150km of terrain, served by 70 lifts, a little more than 10% of its capacity, open this weekend.

8 of the region's 12 skiing areas will offer at least some skiing although the amount available for this opening weekend differs greatly.

Swindon Snowdome Gets Go Ahead - Work To Start in New Year

Plans for what could be the UK's seventh, and most southerly yet, indoor snow centre – have been approved by planners.

Work on the complex, which has been mooted for more than five years, is now expected to begin next spring, with a two-year construction period giving a likely 2021 opening date …some 12 years after the last centre opened in Britain in Hemel Hempstead.

Scotland 2018-19 Ski Season Starts on Saturday

[b]Glencoe and The Lecht ski areas (pictured above) in Scotland have announced they will open on Saturday with some natural snowfall but also thanks to their new all-weather snowmaking machines.

It's believed to be the first time that Scottish ski areas have been able to announce a fixed opening date, which is normally dictated by weather conditions day-to-day and the build-up of natural snow cover.

Serre Chevalier Announces Pre-Opening This Weekend

After Val Thorens and Crans Montana were both forced to cancel their planned 'pre-opening' weekends over the past two weekends (they both have, or will, open for the main season on schedule), Serre Chevalier is the latest to announced they're opening for a 'Pre-Opening' this weekend, and they seem more optimistic.

More than a Metre of Snowfall in past week in Colorado

Colorado's sensational start of winter 18-19 is continuing with resorts there reporting up to 105cm (3.5 feet) of snow in the past week, much of it in the last 72 hours.

Winter Park (pictured above yesterday) has reported the biggest accumulation with most other areas posting 40-70cm in the same period meaning there are powder conditions across the region.

More Than 100 Miles of Piste Open this Weekend at Cervinia-Zermatt

[b]The cross-border Italian-Swiss ski area shared by Cervinia and Zermatt has more than 100 miles of ski runs open this weekend.

The terrain open is believed to be more than double what's open anywhere else in Europe at present and possibly the world.

New Zealand Ski Area to Re-Open for Summer Skiing after Freak Snowfall

Cardrona ski area in New Zealand has announced it will re-open for 'snow fun' a week on Saturday (1st December) - the first day of meteorological summer in the southern hemisphere.

The decision follows a freak snowstorm which a resort spokesperson said meant that the resort has seen a 'significant snowfall' every month of 2018. Exactly how much fell has not been published, but from the images it looks a lot.

Major Thanksgiving Snowstorm Makes Landfall in California

A big snowstorm that is set to bring up to 90cm (three feet) of snow to much of Western North America has hit California as Thanksgiving Day holiday gets underway in the USA.

Although it is still only 7am on the US West Coast the first pictures are starting to appear on social media and the first 24 snowfall measurement stats have been published, with Kirkwood reporting the most so far - 28cm of snow in the past 24 hours.

British Ski and Snowboard, the governing body of British competitive ski and snowboard teams, is changing its name to GB Snowsport today.

The new identity is, the organisation says, more than a rebranding exercise, and brings together every discipline, including recently added Parasnowsport, as one team.

Ischgl and Val Thorens Each Promise 50km of Ski slopes Opening This Week

Two of the big players in French and Austrian skiing open this week and both promise they'll have around 50km of terrain open for their opening days.

The two resorts both have a reputation for opening big areas from day one and for having long season lasting from November to May.

Snow Returns to the Alps

The snow has started falling in the Alps again as temperatures drop after a warm few weeks.

So far up to 10cm accumulations have been reported today in parts of Austria and Switzerland, but the snowfall is widespread and expected top continue in many areas throughout the coming week, with most areas seeing at least some snow by Wednesday.

Ski Slopes Up to 90% Open in Eastern USA

More ski resorts have opened in the USA ahead of the major Thanksgiving Holiday later this month and thanks to a continuing cold autumn in much of the country.

Stowe in Vermont and heavenly in California are amongst the big names to have opened in the past few days.

Dave Ryding Begins 18/19 World Cup Campaign on Sunday

Olympians Dave Ryding and Laurie Taylor will open their 2018/19 campaigns in Finland on Sunday when the first World Cup slalom race of the season takes place in Levi, Finland.

Last year's season-opener was a mixed one for three-time Olympian Ryding who led the field through the first run and was on track for his second career podium before skiing out midway through the second run.

La Plagne Set To Unveil New ‘Centre’

One of Europe's most visited ski resorts will unveil a new look to one of its original villages, Plagne Centre, this winter.

The redesigned centre, one of 10 village bases at the resort, will, "feature a lively village square with a multi-service activity centre, panoramic view bar, four-lane bowling alley and ice-skating rink," a resort spokesperson said.

Vail Latest Resort to Open Early For the Season

Vail has announced it will be opening for winter 2018-19 three days earlier than planned, tomorrow, Wednesday 14th November.

In a statement Vail said they were opening early because the resort had already received four feet (120cm) of snowfall and that it's snowmaking efforts had also left slopes in good shape.

Val Thorens Cancels Pre-Opening Weekend

Val Thorens has just announced it won't be open this weekend for a planned pre-main-opening weekend from November 17th.

"The particularly anticyclonic weather does not allow us to open the resort and its ski area," a statement released by the resort a few minutes ago notes, adding, "The motivated teams of Val Thorens took the decision to focus on the Grand Premiere on November the 24th and 25th."

Canada's 2018-19 Ski Season Starts Today

After a bit of a false start a week ago when Nakiska decided it's 'tentative Nov 3rd opening day' wasn't going to happen, four of Canada's ski resorts will open for the 2018-19 ski season today.

All three of the ski areas around Banff are scheduled to open, along with 1988 Olympic Venue Nakiska, the closest ski area to Calgary.

Resort to Open in French Pyrenees a Week Ahead of Alps

[b]A ski resort in the French Pyrenees has announced it will open this weekend a week earlier than the scheduled openings of some slopes at Chamonix and Val Thorens.

Porté-Puymorens, along with most ski areas in the Pyrenees, saw large end-of-October snowfalls and has since seen more snow on top. It is reported to currently have a 15-30cm base.

Start of Colorado's Season Looking Better than Last Year

Conditions are looking decidedly snowy in Colorado a year on from the start of one of the worst winters for snowfall in the famous ski state's recent history, raising hopes that 2018-19 will be very different to 2017-18.

The ski season started early on October 13th when Wolf Creek was the first resort to open in North America for the season after a 75cm snowfall. It has kept snowing since with Loveland, one of three areas now open, reporting 45cm more snow in the past 72 hours, and powder conditions.

18-19 Ski Season Underway in the Pyrenees

The Spanish ski area of Masella has opened for the 2018 ski season, it's earliest ever opening date. thanks to heavy snowfall in the final days of October in the Pyrenees. The previous opening was more than a week later on November 8th.

The area has opened 10 runs ranging from green to black grade in the Tosa sector served by two lifts. Day passes are 29 Euros for adults, 20 euros for children.

Grandvalira to Continue, and Get Bigger

[b]Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyurenees, formed by the merger of the Pas de la Casa ski area with Soldeu's, is set to continue.

The existence of the Andorran super ski region had been threatened by disagreements among the partners, with one of the key members threatening to pull out and break up the single-lift-pass agreement since 2017.

18-19 Ski Season Starts Nov 1st …in Portugal

The 2018-19 ski season gets underway today in an unlikely location – Portugal.

Whilst the Alps have been hit by heavy snowfall since the weekend the Iberian peninsula has seen a serious October snowfall too with resorts in the Pyrenees as well as Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest ski area down on the south coast near Malaga reporting 30-40cm accumulations.
