Zermatt To Move Ahead With Work on Second 3S Lift

Zermatt's lift company has announced work will commence on a second 3S giant gondola lift above the resort this April.

The first 3S lift, which opened last Autumn and is the world's highest, connects ski lifts with the Klein Matterhorn, the ski area's highest point at 3821 metres. The new lift, due for completion by 2021 will complete an 'Alpine crossing' by connecting the Klein Matterhorn to Testa Grigia above Cervinia on the Italian side.

Advice on Driving to Ski Resorts this Easter if there’s a ‘Hard Brexit’

Ski insurance experts MPI Brokers have issued advice for drivers heading to European ski resorts at Easter in the event of a so-called 'hard Brexit' on March 29th.

The advice is part of a longer list of advisories covering all aspects of travel and aims to just present the facts regardless of what side of the Brexit fence drivers sit on.

Swiss Ski Resorts Carry Out Spring Avalanche Prevention Work Early

Teams in the Swiss Alps are reported to be triggering avalanches with explosive for safety reasons earlier this year than ever before.

Following the widely-publicised Avalanche in Crans Montana a week ago, which crossed a piste killing a visiting French ski patroller, which appears to have been started due to weather conditions rather than due to any human triggering, avalanche control teams in the Valais have brought forward the process of setting offspring avalanches.

Heavy Snow Forecast in the Alps for the start of Spring

After almost three weeks of (mostly) sunny, dry, warm and generally 'spring-like' weather it appears that the start of meteorological springtime later this week will be accompanied by a return to full-on winter in the Alps.

Most ski areas in Europe, other than in Scandinavia and for a few brief periods last week parts of Austria and Bulgaria), have had no fresh snowfall since the start of February, but J2Ski snow forecasting models are predicting increasingly heavy snowfall to begin in the Alps from Thursday, the last day of the month.

Big Snow in BC – Resort Extends Season

Ski areas in Western Canada have been enjoying some of the biggest snowfalls of the year so far …and the fact that after some very cold temperatures over the last few months the Celsius measure has been creeping up to a balmy near zero.

Fernie in BC (pictured above yesterday) has posted the biggest accumulation of the weekend so far with 50cm (20 inches) of fresh snow falling in 24 hours. It has overtaken Whistler to post the deepest snow in western Canada at 267cm, just a centimetre more than the continent's biggest ski resort on 266cm. Big White reported 42cm in the same period.

Val d'Isère Trial Horse Powered Gritter

Val d'Isère have tested out what they believe is the first horse-powered gritter used to spread salt on pavements to break up the ice.

Radio Val d'Isère report that a team from l'Adroit Farm led by Xavier Mattis have developed the machine which rotates automatically to spread salt on pavements around the resort with the speed of spin determined by the pace of Odyssée, the 13-year-old Comtois mare pulling it.

Parts of Finland Suffer Worst Snow Cover For 30 Years

Finland's largest ski resort, Levi, is reporting the country's ski areas are suffering their worst winter for three decades with either warm weather or dry weather preventing adequate snow bases to form.

The season started badly with reports in December that families who had booked Santa breaks pre-Christmas were disappointed by the lack of white stuff at Santa's home. Since then ski areas have been struggling to open slopes.

Further Arson Attacks in French Ski Resorts

Les Arcs is the second leading French ski resort to be hit by apparent arson attacks, following the attack at Courchevel in January which left two people dead.

The latest fires were reported in three separate buildings at Arc 1800 through Tuesday night. No injuries were reported from the three fires but more than 400 people had to leave their accommodations and spend the night in a local sports centre.

New TV Show Filming Mountain Rescues in Val Thorens

A new TV show, set to air at the end of this year, is currently being filmed on the slopes of Val Thorens.

UKTV has commissioned the brand-new series which follows the medical emergency teams at Val Thorens for mew series 'Ski A&E' for its "premium entertainment channel" W.

Four rescued from avalanche in Crans Montana

There was a large avalanche yesterday afternoon in Crans-Montana in Switzerland, leading to a search that went through the night for survivors.

Over 240 people including resort workers, police, military and volunteers were involved in the rescue operation, as well as eight helicopters and a dozen search dogs. The resort is hosting a World Cup race this weekend, which meant that there were many extra staff available to assist.

Record Snowfall Totals in California

The snowstorms in California have now started to reach record levels in terms of all-time February snowfall totals.

Squaw Valley reported last night that it had had more snowfall this February than for any previous February on record.

It has had 196 inches (4.9 metres) of snowfall this month so far.

Mammoth Mountain Announces Ski Season Will Run to 4th July, 2019

Mammoth Mountain in California has announced that snowsports will continue to at least July this year following huge snowfalls over the past few weeks.

The American ski centre, which currently has the deepest base in North America at more than 5 metres, says it will be open to at least the US Independence Day holiday.

Heavy Snow Returns to Western US

Just a week since ski resorts in California reported up to 3 metres of snowfall in 4 days, it is snowing hard again in the western US.

In fact it has hardly stopped this month with some significant snowfalls between the two big snowstorms, but this one is looking like another extreme weather event.

Vail Adds More Resorts to 2019-20 Epic Pass

There are multiple pass options but the two leading contenders are Vail Resorts' 'Epic Pass' or the Alterra Group's 'Ikon Pass'.

Woods Wins Gold

[b]James Woods is Great Britain's newest World Champion after taking out the ski slopestyle final at Park City, Utah on Wednesday.

After qualifying was postponed on Tuesday, Woods finished third in today's heat to take his place in the 10-man final.

Exeter Ski Club Asks Skiers to Sign Petition to Help Keep its Dry Slope Open

A volunteer-run dry ski slope in Exeter is under threat of closure as the local council debate whether to sell off the land on which it is located for housing.

The slope, which celebrated 50 years in operation last year, is one of the world's longest established and the Exeter Ski Club which run it calculate that more than 100,000 people have learned to ski or snowboard there over the years.

Storm May Bring 3 Metres/10 Feet of Snow to California By Tuesday

A giant snow storm currently hitting the west coast of the USA may bring up to 10 feet of snow by the time it is expected to end on Tuesday.

One resort seeing some of the biggest impacts from it so far, Mammoth Mountain, reports it has had up to 60 inches (5 feet/1.5 metres) of snow so far, with 48 hours down and the storm about halfway through.

Dolomites Dumped On

The Italian Dolomites are seeing huge snowfalls as forecast, with some resorts reporting as much as a metre of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

The snow is transformative for the region's 2018-19 winter as many areas had not previously had a metre of snowfall in total all winter.

Lindsey Vonn Brings forward Retirement to World Championships Next Week

Lindsey Vonn, the most successful female skier of all time, has announced she will be retiring after racing at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Are, Sweden, which begin on Monday.

Vonn had hoped to continue racing this season and race at Lake Louise at the start of the 2019-20 World Cup Season, ending her career there, but has decided to finish this month due to ongoing injury pain.

Paltow is accused of knocking over a doctor on the slopes in Utah three years ago, leaving him with a brain injury, short term memory loss and four broken ribs, and not stopping to find out how he was.
