Heavy Snow Forecast in Alps and Dolomites for First Week of April

The heaviest snowfalls for some weeks in the Alps, and across most of Europe's ski areas, are currently in the forecast for Wednesday/Thursday April 3rd and 4th.
Although it's notoriously difficult to predict mountain snowfall totals, and the amounts falling at different altitude levels will of course vary, some resorts may receive as much as 90cm (three feet) of snow in a 48 hour period if the totals expected prove correct. For most however it is 30-60cm (1-2 feet).

Major Ski Area Upgrades at Les 2 Alpes For Winter 19/20

Les 2 Alpes have announced that work to install three major new lifts will be carried out this summer ahead of next winter.
The lifts are part of a bigger picture of multiple long-term development projects involving its ski area, property and facilities which will together see more than 500 million Euros invested in the resort by 2023.

Late March Powder Day in the Eastern Alps

There's been the first significant fresh snowfall for several weeks in the Alps, particularly in Eastern Switzerland and Austria, as well as southern Germany.
Laax in Switzerland has reported the biggest snowfall in the past 24 hours with 45cm (18 inches), followed by Zugspitze in Germany (40cm/16 inches) and St Anton and Saalbach in Austria (30cm/a foot each).

Novak Djokovic Credits Skiing as Factor in his Tennis Success

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic has said that he believes skiing has helped him physically and mentally to reach the top in his sport.
Speaking at a press conference at the Miami Open Djokovic, who has won the last three Grand Slams Djokovic said that unlike many tennis stars, his contract does not prevent him from skiing, and he said he though it helped the flexibility of his ankles and other joints.

Aspen Ski Area Expansion Gets Forest Service Approval

Long standing plans to expand the historic Aspen Mountain ski area have cleared another hurdle with the US Forest Service approving the proposals.
The Aspen Ski lift Company want to add 180 acres of terrain to the ski area which is one of four that make up the Aspen Snowmass resort, and the only one within walking distance of much of the City of Aspen.

World’s First Chairlift With Pull Down Hood to be Upgraded

What was the world's first chairlift with a pull-down hood is to be replaced with a new 10 seat gondola cabin/ 8 seat chairlift combination lift.
The last incarnation of the Zinsberg lift at Austria's Brizen-im-Thale ski area, part of the huge SkiWelt region, the first in the world with a pull-down weather protection hood, began operating in 1987 and has since carried more than 25 million passengers.

Tour Operator Ski-Val Ceases Trading

A small, family-run, British tour operator has ceased trading suddenly after 43 years in business.
Ski-Val, established in 1976, operated ski holidays to Val d'Isere in France and St Anton in Austria.
The Devon-based company's failure was announced midweek whilst some of its clients were in resort and with other due to travel out at the weekend.

Replacement Grands Montets Cable Car At Least 3 Years Away

A replacement for the cable car up to the Grands Montets in the Chamonix Valley will take at least three years to plan and build the CEO of Compagnie du Mont Blanc, the lift operator, has confirmed.
The lift was destroyed by an accidental fire six months ago, the cause of which was identified as a contractor working on lift station renovations ahead of the season.

Europe Re-Takes Current Deepest Snow in World Title from North America

Engelberg has re-taken the title of "current deepest snow depth in the world" for Europe from Squaw Valley in California.
Engelberg quite often hold the position thanks to the deep snow that builds up through the season on its Titlis glacier. After 30cm of fresh snow in the past 48 hours it reports that depth has now reached 616cm or 20.5 feet.

19/20 Ski Gear Available to Test Near Alpe d’Huez

Next winter's ski equipment will be available to test out before this season ends, later this month in fact, at a special ski test event open to the public at the little ski resort of Oz-en-Oisans in France, which shares the huge Alpe d'Huez grand domaine ski area with its 250 km of pistes.

New Snow in the Alps Nears Metre Mark

The heaviest snowfall in the Alps for two months has led to resorts reporting up to 98cm of fresh snowfall in the past 7 days, and some as much as 90cm (three feet) in the past 72 hours.
Switzerland, and particularly the Valais region, has reported the biggest accumulations with Anzere posting those biggest numbers but Les Marécottes – Salvan not far behind with 94cm in the past week, most of it since the weekend.

Scottish Ski Area re-open Slopes after March Snowfall Follows February Thaw

Scottish ski areas are starting to re-open full ski runs and some off piste terrain following 10 days of cold weather and regular snow showers.
The five Highland centres had had to close all but beginner runs following the February thaw but bases have been gradually rebuilding since the start of this month. Scotland often has its best snow conditions in the spring.

Second Californian Ski Area to Stay Open to July

A second ski area in California has announced it will stay open to July. Squaw Valley says it will keep its ski runs open to July 7th, Mammoth had already said it would operate to at least US Independence Day, July 4th, this year.
The news comes after multiple Californian ski areas reported record snowfall totals for February. Many are now sitting on bases of at least 4.5 metres (15 feet) with Mammoth posting the deepest base in North America at over 5.7 metres (19 feet).

Fresh Snow Starts to Build in the Alps

The first major snowstorm in the Alps for three weeks is starting to build fresh cover on already deep bases across the region.
The Snowfall has been very widespread from Austria across Switzerland to France but so far it is Austrian and Swiss resorts reporting the biggest accumulations – up to 35cm/14 inches – in the past 24 hours.

New Zealand Opening For Summer Skiing after Unusual February Snowstorm

Mount Hutt ski area in New Zealand is to offer skiing and snowboarding tomorrow for one day only after a freak summer snowstorm deposited snow up to 50cm deep on the area and most other new Zealand ski centres last week.
The snow, delivered with an unseasonal blast of cold air from Antarctica, is thawing fast, but the centre says it will have very limited terrain open.

Tahoe Ski Areas Extend Ski Seasons Following Record Breaking Feb Snowfall

Three ski areas around Lake Tahoe in California have announced they're going to stay open longer this spring after the huge snowfalls received in February.
Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood, all owned by Vail resorts, each report they've received more snow in February 2019 than in any previous February.
