Huge Snowfalls in Utah

Published : 19-Feb-2021 02:13

Although the mainstream news is naturally focussed on the unusual cold and snowy weather in Texas at present, there's been unusually snowy weather for many US ski areas too.

Of course big dumps of snow in the Rockies in February aren't unusual, but the mountains had been having a below average snowfall winter until a few days ago, and Snowbird described the 1.1 metres (nearly four feet) of snow that fell there in 60 hours there this week as a storm the like of which they had not seen for two decades.

Italy's Aprica ski resort is to unveil what they believe is the longest floodlit run for night skiing in Europe, at 6km (3.75 miles) in length, when Italian resorts are hopefully allowed to re-open next week.

The resort's lift company had the lighting on the Superpanoramica, a blue piste descending from 1,972m that offers fantastic panorama views in the daylight hence its name. The lighting was installed last year but the run has not yet been able to open due to lockdowns.

Sirocco brings Sahara to the Alps

Published : 08-Feb-2021 01:37

The French Alps woke to a coating of red sand this weekend beneath apocalypic skies.

The picture above shows Avoriaz.

The lifts remain closed but it's not the end of the world yet (even allowing for Brexit and Covid). This is not such an unusual event as the Sirocco wind often brings some of the Saharan sand to the Alps, but rarely in the quantities seen this weekend.

Study Finds Chances Of Catching Virus in Ventilated Gondola Cabins Is Very Low

Swiss media reports that a scientific study into the danger of catching the coronavirus on a gondola ride works out about 100 times less than the danger of catching it in a working day in a two-person office.

The study from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) looked at the airborne transmission of virus droplets on a variety of lifts at Engelberg ski area ranging from small gondolas to 80 passenger cable-car cabins. They used pressure sensors to measure airflow.

Zermatt was cut off by an avalanche last weekend. For about 24 hours, both the road and railway were closed and the resort was isolated from the rest of Switzerland.
