Australian Ski Areas Confirm June 2020 Season Opening Dates

Ski areas in Australia have confirmed their expected 2020 season opening dates over the past 24 hours since he governments of both New South Wales and Victoria, where most are located, confirmed ski areas could open from June 22nd.

Not all will open on Monday the 22nd although several are aiming to. Others say they'll aim to start the lifts running on Wednesday 24th or Friday 26th.

Ski Season Resumes in the Alps

Skiers are back on the slopes in Austria today as the Hintertux, Kaunertal and Kitzsteinhorn glaciers re-open. The Kitzsteinhorn announced it has created a small terrain park.

All have social distancing and other virus-spread-prevention measures in place.

Les 2 Alpes Plans to Open Glacier for Skiing from 06 June

Éric Bouchet, director of Les 2 Alpes tourist office has confirmed that the resort will open for summer skiing on their glacier from 06 June

"We are delighted that the resort, the glacier and the mountain bike trails can reopen. It's a real joy after this period of doubt."

Cortina Requests Alpine Ski World Championships Be Postponed A Year

The Italian Ski Federation has made a formal request that the Alpine Skiing World Championships due to take place in Cortina d'Ampezzo next winter be postponed to March 2022.

This would place them a month after the Beijing Winter Olympics and 11 months before the Meribel-Courchevel 2023 Alpine Skiing World Championships

Austrian Glacier Ski Areas Prepare to Re-open This Friday

Following the decision of Norway's three glacier areas to open this month, along with summer ski areas in the USA, next up is Austria, where three resorts plan to open from next Friday, May 29th, a fourth, a week later.

The Austrian glacier areas due to re-open this week are Kaunertal (pictured above), the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier above Kaprun and Hintertux, with the Molltal Glacier re-opening a fortnight earlier than planned for an 11 month long 2020-21 season on June 6th.

Will Snowsports Return To Canada Before Next Winter?

Canada's winter season traditionally lasts until about now with Sunshine ski area near Banff, Alberta (pictured above with heavy snowfall this weekend) and Whistler in BC traditionally the final two areas to end their ski seasons in the latter half of May each year.

Incredible Late-May Conditions in Norway

The half-dozen ski areas still open in Norway are reporting superb powder skiing this week after a major snowstorm hit the country's ski centres at the weekend.

Two of the country's glacier areas reported a metre of snow landing in 48 hours. One of them, Galdhopiggen, had been due to open for its 2020 season on Saturday but delayed to Monday due to the extreme weather.

Portes du Soleil To Sell 5,000 Season Passes At €499 Each

The giant Portes du Soleil ski region which includes the ski resorts of Avoriaz, Chatel, Les Gets and Morzine and offers 600km of slopes spreading over the French/Swiss border has announced it will be selling 5,000 season passes at less than half-price on Friday, May 29th, 2020 at 8am local time (7am in the UK).

No Limit on Slope Users for New Zealand as 2020 Season Start Imminent

New Zealand will be an interesting case study for northern hemisphere ski areas when is 2020 season starts next month.

The country, one of the most successful in limiting the impact of the virus, eased to a 'level 2' lockdown earlier this week which meant many businesses could re-open and some normality resume.

Zermatt Offers 10% Off for Voucher Buyers

Zermatt is selling vouchers which can be used to buy products and services in the resort from 100 different companies based there.

The vouchers, which can be purchased for anything from 50 Swiss Francs (approximately £42) to a maximum of 5000 Francs (approximately £4,200), receive a 10% bonus to their purchase cost from the resort.

2020’s Glacier Ski Season Taking Shape in A Locked-down World

With most of the world's skiing nations slowly easing restrictions on public life, an increasing number of glacier ski areas appear confident that they'll be open in some form over the next few months.

The three glacier ski areas in Norway, the first European ski nation to really start to ease its lockdown three weeks ago, have already started opening and all three should be operating by the last weekend of this month.

More Ski Areas May Open in May than April in the USA

It looks like there may be more ski areas operating in May than there were in April in the US – although the picture remains fragmented and uncertain.

Mt Baldy ski area in Southern California caused a stir in late April when it re-opened for a few weeks saying it could offer better social distancing and hygiene than other resuming activities like golf courses. However the late April date was already outside its normal snow season and it closed again last Sunday May 3rd.

Second Austrian Glacier Confirms Summer Ski Resuming Soon

Austria's Molltal Glacier ski area has confirmed it will open for its 2020-21 ski season on June 6th.

The area, pictured above in May last year, has one of the world's longest seasons, usually running from mid-June one year to mid-May the next, but has of course been closed since mid-March.

First Southern Hemisphere Boarder of 2020 (?) Spotted in New Zealand

What is believed to be the first person to hit the slopes of New Zealand, and possibly the entire southern hemisphere's 2020 season, has been spotted on the slopes of Coronet Peak this morning.

It's still a month until the first ski areas in New Zealand and the rest of the southern hemisphere are due to open for their 2020 season,although what that season will look like on the slopes and indeed whether ski areas will be able to open on schedule due to the pandemic remains uncertain.

Austrian Glacier to Open for Summer Skiing From May 29th

Austria's Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun in Salzburgerland has announced that it will re-open its skiing and snowboarding operation on 29th May, the first in he Alps to do so.

The move, 10 weeks after all of Austria's ski areas were closed in mid-March, follows an Austrian government announcement last week that mountain facilities could resume operations after May 28th.

Gondola To Be Upgraded To Chairlift

In a fairly rare move for a ski area, Méribel has decided to replace a gondola with a chairlift.

The resort is upgrading its elderly Plattières 3 gondola to a high-speed 6-seater chairlift this summer, ready for next season.

The new chair will provide much faster access over towards Les Menuires and without skiers needing to take their skis of.

Heavy Pre-Season Snowfall For Australia

Australian ski areas have reported heavy snowfall over the past 48 hours – six weeks before the ski season there is due to kick off, as is traditional, over the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend at the start of June.

The falls of up to 60cm (two feet) are by far the biggest in the southern hemisphere's autumn 2020 so far.
