Bumper Start To the Season in the Alps

Ski resorts across the Alps are reporting bumper business over Christmas and New Year, crediting the generally good conditions to be found in most areas.

In France the Association Nationale des Maires des Stations de Montagne reported bookings running at 70%, up 3% on last winter, with the biggest numbers growth coming in the northern Alps and in the Pyrenees. January bookings are also running at 3% above average.

Big Sky to Install Fastest Six-Person Chairlift in North America

Big Sky Resort in Montana has announced it will install the new fastest six-person chairlift in North America, the Swift Current 6, for next winter (2020-2021).

In a resort statement Big Sky, which has one of the continent's five biggest ski areas with almost 6,000 acres of skiing, said the new lift is the next step in their strategy to create the most technologically-advanced lift network in North America, a key pillar of the Big Sky 2025 vision.

Drones To Replace Fireworks For New Year Display in St. Moritz

St Moritz have announced that they won't be staging their traditional New Year's Day firework display over the lake, but will instead stage a ten-minute long drone show.

A fleet of 100 drones will work in formation 100 metres above the frozen lake at the famous Swiss resort to create a multi-coloured display and three-dimensional images in the sky on the evening of January 1st, 2020.

Upto 1.2m Of Snowfall in Western Canada this Week

There have been some huge snowfalls in Alberta and BC over the past few days giving exceptional powder conditions.

Resorts along the Alberta/BC border have seen some of the biggest accumulations with Panorama (pictured) in BC and Sunshine, over the border near Banff, both reporting more than a metre (40 inches) of snowfall in the past 7 days.

Weekend Max Snowfall Total in Alps Passes the Metre Mark For Second Straight Weekend

At this point we should note:

• It's not everywhere, that's the biggest total reported.

• It's still "a bit mild" with less snow down low.

New Comedy Festival for French Alps in January

A new comedy festival is heading to the French ski resort of Les Gets, at the heart of the Portes Soleil, next month.

Let's Get Comédie, which will take place from 20th to 24th January 2020, is being billed as Europe's first dual lingual comedy festival, featuring 'Frenglish' comedians.

More Big Snowstorms Arriving in the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees

Another major snowstorm is moving in to Western Europe with forecasting models predicting some resorts could see several feet (60cm+) of fresh snowfall in 24-36 hours over the next few days and some totals of more than a metre more snow by Monday.

All Five Scottish Ski Areas Open This Weekend

It's currently looking good for the popular Christmas Holiday period on Scottish ski slopes after all five Highland ski areas announced they'd have terrain open from this weekend – with most already open or about to.

Cairngorm opened first, the weekend before last with Glencoe and The Lecht joining them last weekend.

Several Resorts in the Alps Post More Than a Metre of Snowfall in Past Week

There's been heavy snowfall in the Alps with a number of resorts reporting more than a metre of snowfall on Friday – Sunday.

Ski areas in France, Italy and Switzerland have all passed the magic metre mark combing snowfall on Sunday-Tuesday at the start of last week and the latest accumulations on Friday-Saturday.

Vail Resorts Announce Plans to Spend $210 Million-ish On Their Resorts in 2020

The huge Vail Resorts group which now runs 37 ski areas in the US, Australia and Canada – including many of the top resorts in all three countries- has announced they'll be investing "approximately $210 million to $215 million" during 2020 to "enhance the on-mountain guest experience."

Snow Starts Accumulating in the Alps Again – Up To 70cm in 24 Hours Reported

Snow depths have started building in the Alps again as conditions turned wintry once more of Monday morning following a largely dry and sunny period over the past fortnight.

Within 24 hours some resorts had reported 70cm (28 inches) of snow had fallen with the biggest accumulations reported in the Swiss Valais and Bernese Oberland regions, followed by ski areas in Northwestern Austria, and also some areas in the Northern French Alps.

North America's Biggest Vertical Now Skiable For 2019-20 Season

Revelstoke in BC, Canada, has announced that it is opening its full vertical for the first time thiswinter, the biggest in North America, following a week of heavy snowfall.

The full 1,730 vertical metres (5,620 vertical feet) is open with the lower mountain is skiable via The Last Spike run.

Courmayeur Announce ‘New’ Red-Black Ski Slope

Courmayeur have announced a 'new' ski slope will open this season offers panoramic views of the 2750m high Arp Ridge and of Mont Blanc.

The resort has invested just under €1.5million in the new Arp slope which begins as a 700m red-grade descent which provides access to a north-facing black piste with a further 600m descent at a 70% gradient.

New Direct Flights to Sarajevo Open Up Ski Holiday Potential of Bosnia

A new direct flight route from London Luton to Sarajevo with national carrier FlyBosnia has opened up the possibility of easy access to the ski slopes of Sarajevo, which hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.

In recent years the pistes on which the Olympic races were originally held have been restored following the devastation of the area during the subsequent Balkans War and the Olympic rings are now on display at the base of the slopes, to remind visitors of its legacy.

According to the latest figures from RAJAR, podcasts there are now 8.4m regular listeners in the UK – a 40% increase on a year earlier.

'The Ski Podcast' is one of thousands of podcasts available, but while some start with a flurry, but then stop after only a few episodes, the team behind 'The Ski Podcast' have just published their 60th episode.

Scottish Ski Season Starting on Saturday

The 2019-20 ski season in Scotland will officially kick off on Saturday at Cairngorm ski centre above Aviemore.

The centre's 'Snowsports Festive Launch Event' will take place from 10am-3pm, and include snowsports taster sessions for under 5s, demos from Cairngorm Ski Club, Scottish Ski club and Gordon Ski Club and Cairngorm Snowboard Club as well as mince pies and mulled wine and the chance to meet Santa and his reindeer.

Big Snowfalls Get The Season Moving in USA

The ski season is back on track in western North America after huge snowstorms dumped up to 1.5 metres (five feet) of snow on resorts in the major ski states of California, Colorado and Utah.

The snow fell through the Thanksgiving long holiday weekend which saw more than 100 ski areas open across the country.
