Fresh Snowfall in the Alps & Pyrenees

April is ending with a return to colder weather in several of the main mountain ranges of Europe including the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Hintertux in Austria (pictured above this morning), Zermatt in Switzerland and Les 2 Alpes in France all reported fresh snow on their upper mountains this morning. All three are among ski resorts offering summer skiing in normal winters.

Another Major Lift Upgade in the Dolomites Going Ahead this Summer

Italy's Kronplatz area, which is one of the world's top three operators of gondola lifts, running 22 such lifts according to SkiResort.info, is the latest to announce it is going ahead with a major lift upgrade this summer ahead of winter 2020-21.

Ski Areas Re-Open in Norway and USA

In the ever-changing and fast-moving situation around the world in terms of the ski industry's response to the COVID-19 pandemic there are some changes to report.

In Norway the number of small centres that have re-opened continues to grow. Roldal, which prior to its pandemic closure five weeks ago was posting the deepest base in the world at nearly six metres is one of the latest to do so, aiming to re-open at 10am tomorrow (it's pictured above prepping slopes before re-opening). The Fonna glacier, which reports 12 metre (40 foot) base says it will open on May 1st.

EasyJet Flights On Sale To End of 2021 Ski Season

Easyjet has now put flights on sale through to 18th April 2021.

Last month the company had earlier put flights for much of winter, including the February half-term holiday period, on sale far earlier than usual, and initially at a low fixed normal price.

Number of Open Ski Areas at Historic Low

The number of ski areas open in the world is believed to be currently the lowest since the advent of high-altitude/glacier lifts more than 50 years ago.

The global lockdown due to the coronaviurs COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of almost all ski areas around the planet.

Billy Morgan, First British Male Olympic Medal-Winning Snowboarder, Won’t Compete in 2020

Billy Morgan, who took Britain's first Olympic medal for a male snowboarder, competing in the Big Air in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018, has told the PA news agency that he won't be competing in Beijing in 2022.

Morgan, 31, whose Olympic debut was at Sochi in 2014 and whose girlfriend is now expecting their first child this summer, said he plans to take part in some fun events, but wants to keep his rediscovered passion for snowboarding.

New Advances In Heated Skiwear Promised Next Winter

The German-based family-run ski clothing company Schöffel have announced a range of skiwear which incorporates heating to ski trousers and ski jackets will be on sale this autumn.

Heating in ski clothing is not entirely new but Schöffel say that their breakthrough is in far thinner heating elements than were previously possible, with the warmth delivered via one millimetre thin carbon nanotubes.

Deepest Snowpack At Still-Open European Ski Area Nears Six-Metres (20 feet)

Riksgränsen ski area in northern Sweden, which is so far still open, has reached a 5.8 metre (over 19 feet) base depth after more heavy snowfall over the past few weeks.

Most years somewhere in the world reaches at least a six-metre (20 foot) snow depth by the end of winter but this year nowhere had posted more than a 5.5 metre base before resorts were forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic from mid-March.

Austria To Allow Ski Touring To Resume from 1st May

Austria has announced that a number of sporting activities will be permitted to resume from 1st May as it continues to announce relaxations in its lockdown.

Although a number of the country's best known ski resorts are currently still in strict quarantine having been identified as ';hotspots' for the spread of the virus around Europe and even further afield in March, the country itself has reported fewer cases and far fewer deaths, than many of Europe's other leading ski nations.

Snow Across Southern Hemisphere Ski Slopes

[b]Snowfall has been reported across ski slopes in Australia, New Zealand and in the Chilean Andes over the past 36 hours - about two months before the 2020 ski season is due to start there.

Currently there's considerable doubt, due to the pandemic lockdown, that ski areas will be able to open as planned. Resorts are generally closed to autumn visitors, but none the less are preparing for a ski season, they hope, at some point this winter, if at all possible.

Norwegian Ski Areas Re-Opening (Well At Least One...)

Norway is to become the third country to re-open ski lifts, under tight restrictions, following an easing of the lockdown there tomorrow, Tuesday 14th April.

It is unclear how many ski centres will choose to re-open for the last few weeks of the season, but this does appear to mean that the country's three glacier ski areas an open for spring/summer snow sports if they wish. They are reporting snow lying up to 12 metres (40 feet) deep to start their season.

Finnish Ski Resorts Plan Early Autumn Opening

Several leading ski areas in Finland are stockpiling snow in the process known as "Snow farming" in order to have snow ready to spread back out on the slopes in late September as temperatures cool again.

Two of Lapland's larger resorts, Levi and Yllas, are both busy piling up huge mounds of snow. Ruka says it will open on October 2nd, whilst Levi says it will have its earliest ever October opening.

First Ski Area in Europe Re-Opens After Lockdown Eased in Czech Republic

A Czech Republic ski area has re-opened for Easter after the country's government eased lockdown restrictions in the country earlier this week and instead encouraged more physical activity.

The country's CT24 TV news has reported that the Praděd ski resort at Ovčárna in Jeseniky is so far the only one in the country that has re-opened its lifts.

Australian Ski Areas planning to open (if they're able to)

We have to say this looks pretty optimistic at this point but, nonetheless, the major ski resorts in Australia are still making plans to enable them to open - if they're allowed - on or around their usual big opening weekend (the long weekend holiday for the Queen's birthday starting June 6th 2020).

Michelin-star Chefs in Savoie Mont Blanc cooking meals for local hospitals

France is in lockdown and restaurants are closed. However, several chefs have decided to keep working and are cooking meals for three of Savoie Mont Blanc's main hospitals.

This initiative was launched in Paris first, by Guillaume Gomez, who has been the Elysée's chef since 2013. Twenty chefs in Savoie Mont Blanc have decided to follow it and are cooking 1200 meals every Sunday for doctors, nurses and all other hospital workers.

Swiss Ski Resort Offers ‘Rent a Cow’ Service

Swiss ski resort Lenk are offering anyone the chance to rent one of their local cows.

The resort says that hundreds of cows move to higher ground in Simmental during the Spring to graze the rich pastures.

Describing the rental offer as an "extraordinary opportunity" anyone can choose a cow from an online picture gallery, meet them when next permitted to travel to the Alps and then enjoy their share of the cheese produced from the cow's milk after the summer.

Middlesbrough Indoor Snow Centre Gets Go Ahead

A planned indoor snow centre for Middlesbrough in England's northeast has been granted full planning permission.

The £30m Subzero Snow Centre, which is expected to be up and running by 2022, will be England's most northerly, although there is a centre near Glasgow in Scotland, Snow Factor, which has signed up to operate the new Middlesbrough centre.

Scandinavia’s Leading Ski Resort Operator To Close Swedish Resorts

Following advice from the Public Health Authority, SkiStar, the group which runs most of Scandinavia's leading ski resorts says it will close its ski facilities in Åre, Sälen and Vemdalen in Sweden after the weekend.

The company's decision seems to be following the Norwegian model of three weeks' earlier, closing ski centres because it is feared local medical facilities will not be able to cope of a lot of tourists get sick, rather than because of a government order to do so.
