Likely January Opening Date for Ski Lifts Slides in Countries Where They’re Closed

The date by which ski areas in countries where the government have kept ski lifts closed will open appears to be sliding back – although in several cases there is not yet confirmation of a delay or a new planned date if there is a delay. With the January 7th date most were working to before Christmas fast approaching, there seems now to be a movement towards January 18th as the revised target date.

French Ski Areas Struggle Through Lifts Shut Down

French ski resorts and most of the businesses within them are fighting what appears to be a losing battle to keep revenue flowing in through what should be one of the busiest fortnights of the year.
The response to the French/German and Italian call for ski areas to close over Christmas and New Year has been a case of most other ski nations ignoring them, and a fragmented approach from those that have followed the call to some degree.

Snowy End to 2020 in Much of Europe

Although it is difficult or impossible for most people ion most countries to get to ski areas at present, except perhaps those who live in or very close to resorts, weather does continue to happen in the mountains and the final days of 2020 look like they're going to be the snowiest since early December.

Austria’s Ski Season Starts

Austria's 20-21 main ski season has got underway at around 200 of the country's ski centres today.
Initially resorts are only open to people living locally with travel to the country difficult from outside Austria and hotels closed.
The tourist season is due to begin on January 7th, when French and Italian resorts are also due to open, although doubts have been expressed as to whether that will happen on that date in those countries as skiers and resorts hope.

World’s Thickest Ski Area Snowpack Passes 4 Metre Mark

Although travel to most of the world's ski areas is at best difficult, if not impossible, for most skiers, including now even those living quite locally, some will still be interested in early-season snow conditions, perhaps in the hope that they might yet reach the resorts that look good now before the end of winter 20-21.

US Ski Resort Sells Out Of Lift Tickets For A Week

Deer Valley Ski Resort in Utah has sold out of lift tickets from December 21 - 23 and then for the full New Year's Week from December 27 - January 2.
During the coronavirus pandemic ski resorts in north America have been limiting the number of tickets available each day to ensure social distancing remains realistic, however Deer Valley is in any case a resort that tends to sell out of lift tickets around Christmas and new year due to its popularity over that period even in normal times and full lift ticket allocations available. That's despite raising its lift ticket prices at Christmas and New Year.

27 European Nations Ski Areas Open This Christmas

Of the 41 European countries that have ski areas operating outdoors relying on real snow 27 of them expect to have at least one centre open over Christmas Day.
But it is a very complicated picture.
Austria, for example, will allow its ski areas to open, without tourists, from Christmas Eve.

Today, the Swiss federal government announced strict new measures to help reduce the rate of Covid-19 in the country that includes the closure of hospitality businesses such as restaurants, bars, museums, sport centres, spas, casinos, cinemas and theatres.

Huge Snowfall for Northeast US

The North-eastern corner of the US has had huge snowfalls over the past 48 hours - bringing to an end an often warm and wet autumn that had caused opening problems and limited snow cover for many areas.
Up to 75cm (2.5 feet) of snow has been reported with ski areas in Vermont reporting some of the biggest accumulations to date.

Austrian Ski Areas Report 3 Metre Base Ahead of Opening To Locals Next Week

Ski areas in Austria have been posting images of deep powder snow waiting local skiers when the country's resorts open for 2020-21 in a week's time.
The snow looks to be particularly good on glaciers – which had already opened in late summer and early Autumn before the country went in to its second lockdown in early November.

French Ski Resort Grooms Two Runs For Xmas, But No Lifts Up

French ski resorts are opening for Christmas, just without the ski lifts running to take skiers and boarders up the slopes.
But the resorts are offering pretty much everything else, including cross-country skiing and tobogganing on ski slopes. Ski touring is a questionable area as some resorts are encouraging it to a certain extent whilst others are warning that normally groomed and patrolled slopes are not being patrolled and may not be avalanche safe.

Austrian, French and Italian Ski Season May Start January 7th, 2021

Reports from multiple sources over the past 24 hours indicate that the five countries which have forced their ski slopes to close over Christmas and New Year are looking to open on Thursday January 7th.
The first week after the peak Christmas and New Year weeks is traditionally the quietest of the ski season for most resorts.

Season Underway on the Iberian Peninsular

Two small ski areas have opened for the last few days in Spain and Portugal on the Iberian Peninsular.
Portugal's sole ski area, Serra da Estrela (pictured above this week), opened following a major snowstorm at the start of this week. It is also reported to have tripled its snowmaking capabilities.

Tour Operator Alpine Elements Goes Bust Blaming French Xmas Ski Resorts Closure

Ski tour operator Alpine Elements Ltd is the latest to be forced into administration following the continued pressures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The company joins a short, but sadly growing, list of ski tour operators forced out of business including VIP Ski and Ski Amis.

Ski Areas Forced to Close Warn of Slope Dangers

Ski areas in France and Italy forced to close over Christmas by their governments have warned of dangers to a growing numbers of ski-tourers and hiker heading out on to their slopes after large snowfalls over the past week.

Swiss Ski Area Announces 3 Day Closure as Huge Snow Storm Nears

Although most ski areas in the Alps are currently closed due to coronavirus concerns, Swiss resorts are determinedly staying open so far, with more than a dozen open for the season.
However this coming weekend at least one has announced it will be shutting down operations. It's for the old-fashioned reason of a big snowstorm hitting though, not because of the virus.

Austria Announce Ski Lifts Can Run from Christmas Eve – But Only For Locals

Austria's young leader Sebastian Kurz has announced that the country's ski lifts will be able to re-open from Christmas Eve – but crucially only for local people, with hotels remaining closed and no "winter tourism."
That will be the position for two week, then ski tourism may resume, with hotels and restaurants re-opening, from 7th January, 2021, although it appears that depends on how things go with the pandemic.

Snow Falls as French Resorts Wait to Hear Details of Xmas Closure Plans

It is snowing in the Alps this morning as ski areas continue to wait to find out the details of closures over Christmas and New Year.
Ski resorts in the region have good snow-cover lying up high but on main slopes below 2000-2500m there has been little pre-season snow in the past month so even if resorts could open, it does not currently look like the snow would be good at many.
