As Europe’s Ski Season Stalls, 100+ Areas Now Open in North America

An estimated 100+ ski areas have now opened in North America as the 2020-21 ski season continues to gather pace in Canada and the USA.

Most of the continent's big name ski resorts from coast to coast are now open with Whistler Blackcomb among the latest to join them. Most of those that haven't yet opened plan to do so next weekend.

Australian Ski Resort Destroyed By Bushfires Begins Rebuilding

For those with long memories to the times before the virus, you may recall Australia was first visited by horrific bush fires at the start of the year which threatened many of the country's ski areas.

Sadly one of them, Selwyn Snow Resort had its buildings, lifts and woodland almost completely destroyed as it was engulfed in flames, but its owners committed immediately to rebuilding the ski area, better than it was before.

French Ski Areas “Confused” By Macron Xmas Closure Announcement

French ski areas have been announcing surprise and shock at President Macron's announcement that he thought it "impossible" ski resorts could open for Christmas, but that he would take up to 10 days to make a final decision, leaving resorts and holidaymakers in limbo.

French Ski Areas Likely to Remain Closed Until January says Macron

French ski resorts are likely to stay closed until January, the country's president Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday evening.

Addressing the nation, President Macron set out plans for re-opening the country following the end of the country's November lockdown this weekend.

UK Arrivals Self-Quarantine Requirement Cut By Half if You Pay for A Test

Skiers arriving back in England after a trip abroad can cut the time they need to spend self-isolating from 14 to 6-7 days according to new rules announced by the government.

After five days of self-isolation upon return skiers can take a virus test, privately and at their expense, which, if it returns negative, would then allow them to stop self-isolating.

World's Largest Indoor Snowpark To Open Next Year in Abu Dhabi

One of the longest planned indoor snow centres in the Middle East will open in 2021, the company behind it says.

Snow Park Abu Dhabi will be a 'destination snow park attraction' covering 11,600 square metres (125,000 sq ft park) with less of an onus on skiing and snowboarding, it is understood, but more on multi-snow fun activities including sledging and zorbing. There will be 13 different snow fun activities and rides available.

Canadian Resort Posts 90cm Of Snowfall in 7 Days

Snow condition are the best in the world in Western Canada at present with Sunshine ski area near Banff posting 92cm (3 feet, 1 inch) of fresh snowfall in the past 7 days, taking their season-to-date total to 2.5 metres (8 feet plus).

The ski area, along with others across western Canada, have been posting powder conditions daily with 10-20cm falling every 24 hours.

USA Has Most Ski Areas Open For 20-21 in the World

The US now has more open ski areas than any other country, with many more US resorts targeting this Saturday or Sunday for their opening weekend.

Around a dozen US resorts have now opened, overtaking Switzerland, with 11 areas (although more than half of those currently open only at weekends), which had itself overtaken Austria at the start of this month, initially because Austria's open glacier ski areas were forced to close by a November lockdown in the country.

Some Ski Areas Delay Main Season Start Due to Warm Weather

There's good news for all the skiers and boarders who have been complaining about images and video posted of great early-Autumn snow conditions in the Alps, when ski areas are closed or they don't feel safe to travel to even when open.

The first reports are coming in of ski areas unable to open for an old-fashioned, pre-virus reason: it's too warm for good snow condition or snowmaking down in the valleys.

Work To Get Underway on Cairngorn Funicular Repairs

Work is due to get underway in the next week to repair the funicular railway which serves the top station of the Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands and provides a year-round attraction for non-skiers.

The lift last operated over two years ago when it was closed over safety concerns centred on the concrete track supports of the 20 year old structure.

Inghams Cancel December Departures, Crystal Say They’re Waiting For Now

Inghams have decided now is the time to call it a day on December bookings, whereas Crystal say they still hope December trips may still happen.

Five Colorado Ski Areas Open from Friday

After a rather slow start to the season compared to its usual early openings, five Colorado ski areas will be open from this Friday 13th October onwards.

Loveland is the latest area in the state to open, later today, following big snowfalls there at the start of the week.

Snow Storm Hits Western US

A major snowstorm is currently impacting much of Western North America.

So far ski areas are reporting up to six inches (15cm) of snowfall but the storm is expected to continue for several days. A winter storm warning is in place for the next few days in several states.

Keystone Opening, Other Colorado Areas Delay

Keystone ski area in Colorado confirmed late last night that it would open for the 20-21 season later today. The centre had said it was good to go in terms of snow cover but was waiting for permission from state authorities to open, which has finally come through.

Next Round of Alpine Ski World Cup Delayed By Snow Conditions, Not The Virus

The Austrian announcement of a month long November lockdown to try to slow the rise in virus cases in the country led to the nine ski areas that had already opened in the country closing on Tuesday and it also raised questions about the country hosting the second leg of the Alpine Ski World Cup.

Colorado Prepares for Main Season Launch

It has not been the ideal run-up to the start of the 2020-21 season in the key US ski state of Colorado.

Of course the pandemic is a major factor, but the state has also been impacted by periods of warm, dry weather and by major autumn forest fires.

A ‘New’ Red Piste From Morzine

[b]Morzine, on the French side of the huge Portes du Soleil ski region which crosses the Swiss border with 600km of slopes linking a dozen ski villages, will unveil a new ski run this winter.

The new slope is in fact the 'remodelling' of the existing red Aigle run which descends from the summit of Nyon at 2,019m, down to the Nyon plateau at 1,413m.
