Bump In Business For Smaller New Zealand Ski Areas

New Zealand is leading the ski world (and the world in general) at present in successfully suppressing the virus and its ski areas can all operate pretty much normally.
Half-a-dozen have opened for the 2020 season so far with more due to join them in the next few days.

Snowsports Charity Running Virtual Auction on 4th of July

The Ellie Soutter Foundation is staging a virtual auction, this Saturday, July 4th, 2020.
The charity, which is dedicated to supporting talented young people in snow sports, will stream the auction live from the French Alps on Saturday 4th July between 4:30-7:30pm CET.

Third Season Without Funicular Looms for Cairngorm

Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands will have a third ski season without its key funicular railway lift providing access to its upper mountain and upper baser station facilities.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) chief executive Charlotte Wright has dashed hopes that the "best case scenario" presented last autumn that the funicular might be repaired in time for winter 20-21, saying that the Covid-19 crisis has delayed decision making on project.

Protect Our Winters UK Ask Skiers & Boarders To Join Virtual Lobby of MPs

The UK branch of Protect Our Winters (POW), the global movement of skiers and boarders to fight climate change, is urging skiers and boarders to join a virtual lobby, aimed at asking British MPs to take action for a better future.
The virtual lobby is being organised by a group called The Climate Coalition, a group of over 100 member organisations including POW.

Australia’s 2020 Ski Season Gets Underway

Australia's 2020 ski season has got underway today with two areas – Thredbo and Mt Baw Baw – opening. Perisher and Mt Buller are scheduled to join them on Wednesday with Falls Creek and Mt Hotham, which had also planned to open on the 24th, now delaying their opening to the 29th.

SkiStar Report Bookings Up Slightly For 2020-21 After Profits Hits By Pandemic

SkiStar, the company which runs most of Scandinavia's leading ski areas, taking 41% of the total market there, as well as running St Johann in Tirol in Austria, say that advanced bookings for next winter are actually up – if only by 1% - on the same time last year.

Summer Solstice Skiing Under The Midnight Sun to be Broadcast Live on Facebook

The famous resort of Riksgransen has re-opened for four days around Midsummer for its special annual celebration.
The resort, located 250km inside the Arctic Circle, has a ski season that begins in early March and stays open to late May. It than closes for 3-4 weeks before it's special annual re-opening, the highlight of which is skiing under the midnight sun into the summer solstice.

Australia's 2020 Ski Season Prepares for Launch

Australia's 2020 ski season gets under way in less than a week, with most of the country's leading areas due to open on either Monday 22nd or Wednesday 24th June next week.[/b]
There appears to be a great deal of pent up demand for Aussies to get on the slopes – perhaps in part driven by the two week delay from the normal season start which should have been the first weekend of June; in part by a loosening of lockdown and in part by some great snowy images from pre-season snowfalls – particularly in May.

New Zealand's 2020 Season Starts With No Social Distancing Required

After months of planning and wondering how ski areas would operate, and at one point whether they would be able to operate at all, New Zealand's 2020 ski season has begun began today with near normality.
Following the country's successful suppression of the virus and its policy of closed borders, it moved to its lowest level of lockdown earlier this week, meaning no masks or social distancing are required.

Work Progressing on New World’s Largest Indoor Snow Centre

Work is reported to be progressing on what is set to be the new world's biggest indoor snow centre under construction in Shanghai.
The project, first announced nearly two years ago in 2018 and then called Winastar China now appears to have been re-christened Montigo Resort Shanghai but remains on track to open in Beijing winter Olympics Year, 2022, according to Montigo Resorts.

Southern Hemisphere 2020 Ski Season Underway

The 2020 ski season has got underway in the southern hemisphere with the first ski area to open Afriski (pictured above this April) in the small African nation of Lesotho.
Prior to the pandemic Afriski had been one of the areas that had set an early season start date targeting Thursday, June 4th. Mt Hutt in New Zealand was aiming for June 5th and Australian resorts June 6th. The only other candidate was the small 'Happy Valley' snow play and beginner ski area on Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand which has all-weather snowmaking and planned to open on May 30th.

“Great Conditions” As Glacier Resorts Re-open in Switzerland, France and Austria

Five more glaciers will open in the Alps this weekend joining three in Austria and two in Norway that have already re-opened and take the numbers open in Europe back into double figures after hitting a low of two 10 days ago.
Crans Montana and Zermatt in Switzerland and Les 2 Alpes and Val d'Isere will be the first areas to re-open in Switzerland and France respectively for nearly three months, with the Molltal glacier the fourth to re-open in Austria, although one of these, Kaunertal, will close again on Sunday.

Les 2 Alpes, France to open tomorrow (6th June 2020)

In another small step back toward something like normality, Les Deux Alpes will start their summer season tomorrow; with weekend openings until late June when they open full-time for the summer.
Note that the summer skiing on the glacier will be open to professionals only until the 27th June.

People More Worried About Future Holiday Costs than Virus Fears

A number of consumer survey results that have arrived at J2Ski Towers in the past 24 hours seem to indicate (the travel companies that commissioned them clearly hope) that there's a pent up demand to head off travelling, and of the reasons not to go, virus concerns are low down the list.

Four Ski Areas Open For June in the US

Four ski areas are now open in the USA after Beartooth Basin in Wyoming and Crystal Mountain in Washington state re-opened yesterday.
They join Timberline ski area in Oregon and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado which re-opened in late-May.
It means that more ski areas are open in June at the start of summer in the USA than there were for much of spring during this strange year.

Bracknell Dry Ski Slope Latest to Be Threatened With Closure

The ski slope at Bracknell in Berkshire is the latest to be threatened with closure in the UK.
Employees at the slope, part of the wider John Nike Leisuresport facility which also includes an ice rink, are reported by local media to have been sent a statement saying that the centre's management are consulting of possible redundancies.
