Austrian Ski Areas To Close As Nation Goes in to November Lockdown

Austria is the latest country to announce its glacier ski areas are to close to the general skiing public as the country starts a four week 'hard' new lockdown from Tuesday.
The announcement by Chancellor Sebastian Kurz led to open glacier ski areas promptly announcing their closure from Tuesday, but saying they'd stay open up to then on Sunday and Monday.

Swiss Resorts Step Up Pandemic Prevention Measures as 10 Open in October

Four more Swiss ski centres have announced they're opening this weekend, taking the total to 10, the most in the world for one country at present – overtaking Austria's nine. However a number of the areas are currently opening at weekends only.

At Least 5 North American Ski Areas Expected Open For Halloween

At least three US and three Canadian ski areas are expected to be open this weekend as Halloween falls on Saturday, with November starting on Sunday.
At the same time a major snowfall expected to hit the East Coast at the end of this week could lead to more areas opening.

Ski Nations Close Slopes Now, Hoping To Open For Main Season

France, Germany and Italy have all now announced some form of 'mini lockdown' which each mean ski areas will be closed in November, with the hope that this will lead to currently fast-rising virus cases dropping and that resorts will be able to open, under 'new normal' conditions of course, for Christmas and the main season in December.

Indoor Snow Centre for Sydney Still on the Cards

Plans for a $200m (Australian) indoor snow centre for Western Sydney first announced several years ago are still alive and the plans are in fact now one step closer, according to local reports.
The proposed Winter Sports World for Penrith in Western Sydney is the latest of multiple indoor-snow-centre projects announced for the city lover the past three decades.

More Big Snowfalls in the Alps - Up to 80cm Reported

There have been more big snowfalls in the Alps over the past 48 hours. There's also been plenty of snow for the Pyrenees and Dolomites.
The biggest accumulations have been reported this morning on Austrian glaciers which are already open for the season - including 50cm at Solden, 75cm at Hintertux (pictured) and 80cm at the Stubai.

Colorado Ski Season Starting Wednesday (Or Sooner)

Wolf Creek ski area in Colorado has announced it will start running its lifts from tomorrow Wednesday, October 28th, the first larger ski area in the US to open for the 21-22 season.
Colorado has seen significant snowfall since Sunday after a warm, sunny spell interrupted snowmaking efforts. Some areas reported nearly two feet (60cm) of snow had fallen by Monday evening.

First Ski Areas Open in Canada & US For 20-21 Season

North America's 20-21 ski season has got underway with Wild Mountain ski area in the US state of Minnesota claiming the kudos of first on the continent to open for the season.
The Midwest had reported record low-October temperatures which allowed snowmaking systems to fire up, and there was also some natural snowfall.

Fewer People on Lifts But Longer Opening Hours & Chance to Hike Up at Jackson Hole

North American resorts are preparing for similar operations to European ones this winter, but one key difference is capacity limits. In Canada and the US most areas will be restricting the maximum number of people on the mountain, and in enclosed lifts like gondolas or cable cars (known as trams in the US), in Europe it looks like they won't.

Will Canadian or US Resort Be First to Open in North America For 20-21?

It may be a moot point for many skiers around the world that would like to be heading to ski in North America this winter, with travel to the Canada or US "difficult" at best at present, but nonetheless the start of the 20-21 North American season is now, probably, less than a fortnight away.

French and Swedish Ski Seasons Starting Saturday

Les 2 Alpes and Tignes are both reporting excellent conditions awaiting on their glaciers after several September and October snowfalls in the Alps over the past few weeks.
It is believed to be the first time this century that two French areas will start the season together.

More Snowfall in the Alps, Dolomites, Pyrenees...

Ski resorts in the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees are all reporting their third significant snowfall in about a fortnight.
Resorts including Baqueira Beret and Grandvalira in the Pyrenees, Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites and numerous centres in the Alps have been posting fresh snowy images on their social media feeds today.

Dolomiti Superski To Offer Advice on Least Crowded Days to Visit

Italy's Dolomiti Superski area, which is also one of the world's largest lift pass systems, kicks off its 20-21 season as usual at the end of November, this year on Saturday, 28th.
This will be, however, the first day of skiing since Italy's lockdown began on March 9th, 2020, a week before most of the rest of Europe, and with infection rates currently increasing again, Dolomiti Superski's has launched a wide range of measures on hygiene and social distancing, but also automatic refunds on lift passes of another lock down occurs. It's all bundled up under the campaign name: "We Care About You."

Engelberg Opening This Weekend

Engelberg is opening its Titlis glacier for skiers and snow boarders on Saturday, 10th October, for its usual eight-month ski season which typically runs to Mid-May the following year, virus-permitting.
The area has seen some good snowfalls in recent weeks and reports excellent conditions. It will be open daily from Saturday subject to daily weather conditions.

86% of Dedicated Skiers Still Intend To Ski This Year

The results of a survey by The Ski Club of Great Britain carried out at the end of September has found that 86% of skiers still intend to go skiing this season with a quarter having already booked their holiday.
The survey was a follow up to a larger survey at the end of lockdown in June which had found 96% of skiers planned to hit the slopes this winter at that point – so it appears 10% fewer remain optimistic.

20-21 Ski Season Underway in Lapland

The 20-21 ski season has got underway in Finland with two of the country's largest ski areas opening at the weekend.
Levi and Ruka both used snow farming techniques - saving the snow under cover from the previous summer then spreading it back out on the slopes - to create a few kilometres of ski slope plus terrain park features.
