First Eight-Seat Chairlift Coming to Eastern North America

Loon Mountain in New Hampshire is to install the first lift with eight-seat chairs on the Eastern side of North America over the summer, ready for winter 21-22.

The project was originally announced more than a year ago but was one of those suspended by the Boyne Group, which owns the ski area, after the coronavirus began. However the delayed start of work this spring has now been given the go ahead.

Whistler Closed By Coronavirus

North America's largest ski area at Whistler Blackcomb in BC, Canada is being closed down at short notice by health authorities following a spoke in virus infections there.

The cluster in Whistler Blackcomb is reported to be of the so-called P.1 "Brazilian variant" which is believed to be more transmissible and more resistant to antibodies than earlier strains.

Second Billionaire Dies Whilst on A Ski Trip

Petr Kellner, purported to be the wealthiest person in the Czech Republic according to the Forbes list of billionaires, has died in a helicopter crash.

He was one of five who died in the crash on the heli-skiing trip near the Knik Glacier in Alaska. One person did survive and is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

4 Vallées Closing A Week Early

The 4 Vallées have announced they'll be closing a week earlier than planned this winter, on 18th rather than 25th April, as they face ongoing operating losses.

The area has been operating what has been the largest ski area open in Europe this winter, at one point offering 370km of runs, about 80% of the maximum area, though more recently nearer 300km.

Kazan, Russia will host the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2022 with a key aim of transforming the lives and prospects of people with intellectual disabilities across Russia.

Using the platform of the Games, Special Olympics will seek to transform attitudes about intellectual disabilities in Russia, as well as create new opportunities for social integration for the estimated three million people with intellectual disabilities living in Russia.

Despite Pandemic, Vail Resorts Value at All Time High

Vail Resorts have published a number of stats which give some idea of how it is coping through a year of the pandemic.

Vail Resorts, which owns 37 ski areas, believed to be more than any other company, mostly in the US but including Canada's Whistler Blackcomb and Australia's largest resort Perisher, reported a net loss of $153.8 million for the 2021 fiscal first quarter compared with a loss of $106.5 million a year ago. Earnings and revenues for the start of 2020-21 were down 27% compared to the same point in the 19-20 season.

From Water Into Wine in Tignes

While technically not a miracle, the French ski resort of Tignes has recently been successful in extracting wine from water.

For the last year a Chignin Bergeron cask and a box of 950 bottles of Roussanne has been stowed beneath the ice in Tignes Lac.

Europe Overtakes North America for World’s Deepest Reported Snowpack 20-21

Engelberg in Switzerland has overtaken Alpental in the USA to post the world's deepest snowpack at 600cm (20 feet), one centimetre (2/5 of an inch) more than the Washington State resort's 599cm. However this position does not look like it will last long.

Jet2.com Release Winter 21/22 Ski Flights

Quickly forgetting the current season, airline Jet2.com has issued its list of flight destinations for next season, adding Chambery to its line-up of ski destination airports, which already include existing ski flights to Switzerland, Austria, other options in France, Italy and the Pyrenees. The airline operates out of ten UK bases, including new choice Bristol Airport.

British Tour Operators Report Booming 21-22 Ski Season Holiday Sales

A year on from the first lockdown last March, which saw ski holiday companies in some cases struggling to refund skiers whose bookings had to be cancelled, and a few companies going bust, many are now reporting booming advanced sales for next winter.[/b]

Ukraine Ski Resort Closed for Quarantine

Ukraine's biggest resort of Bukovel has been shut down following a spike in virus infections in recent weeks. Only people living locally are allowed to move around within the resort.

The resort has been declared a 'red zone' for infections with cases reported to be currently rising there.

Small Hotels May Re-Open in April At Late-Opening Austrian Ski Areas

Small, family-run hotels may re-open in April at Austrian ski areas if the country's government allows them to do so after Easter, according to Obertauern ski area in Salzburgerland.

The ski area, one of the country's most snowsure and traditionally having one of the longest ski-seasons in the Alps, from November to early-May, says even if the Austrian government do allow hotels to re-open in Austria, it will be too late for this season for most ski areas in the country, which naturally close by then anyway.

First Metre of Snowfall Reported As Major Storm Hits The Alps

Some Swiss ski areas are already posting up to a metre of snowfall as a major snowstorm gets underway in the Alps.

Initially ski areas in France and Western Switzerland are posting the biggest accumulations in the first 24-48 hours, but the snow is expected to get heavier further east in to Austria over the next few days.

New Owners of Utah’s Sundance Ski Area Announce New Lifts

The new owners of Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah have already announced plans for lift upgrades next season.

Sundance was established by actor and keen skier Robert Redford in 1969 but was put on the market last December after more than five decades of ownership by the Hollywood great.

Australian Ski Area Rising from the Ashes (Literally)

Details have been announced of the reconstruction of Selwyn Snow Resort in Australia, which was largely destroyed in the catastrophic bushfires that engulfed parts of the country a few months before the pandemic hit last year.

The resort's operators the Blyton Group have signed a 40-year lease agreement with NSW National Parks to ensure viability of the investments which will include a new guest visitor centre, bigger than its predecessor, doubled snowmaking capacity, lift upgrades, an expanded snow sports learning area, a new snow play wonderland and what's promised to be "Australia's premier toboggan park" as well as a tubing carousel, skating rink, kids' skidoos and a miniature enchanted village.

US Ski Areas Extend Season in to May

A number of US ski resorts have announced that their 20-21 ski season will continue in to May.

Breckenridge in Colorado has said they'll be staying open this year, conditions permitting, to Monday May 31st, the Memorial Day public holiday in the US. This is in line with a policy to stay open to the start of June each season the resort announced some years ago now. Last year it could have reopened at the end of May after the March/April first lockdown in the USA but owners Vail resorts decided not to.

Italy Extends Ski Resort Closures Until At Least Easter

Italy's government say that ski areas there will not now be able to open until at least Easter in its latest delay.

The country was the first in Europe to go in to a full lockdown, almost a year ago, on March 9th 2020 and most ski areas there have not opened since, although several, including Cervinia, were able to open from late spring to mid-Autumn in between lockdowns.

Austria’s Skiwelt Announces Early Season End This Weekend

One of Austria's largest ski areas has announced it is ending its 20-21 season early, this weekend, on March 7th.

The news comes as two other ski areas that announced they were closing a few weeks ago as Tirol region introduced a requirement that skiers must now hold negative COVID tests before hitting the slopes, St Anton and Solden, have decided to reopen.
