Cabins Damaged on Major Courchevel Lift

Both cabins on Courchevel's Saulire cable car are reported to have been "severely damaged" the lift operators say, during statutory testing this week.

It appears that cabins at each end of the lift collided with the top and bottom stations of the lift during the annual safety tests. No one was injured.

Vail Resorts To Spend $320m on 19 New Lifts for 22/23

Vail Resorts, by most measures now the largest ski resorts operator in the world, has announced that it will invest $320 million to build 19 new lifts ahead of the 22-23 season. This is on top of a $200m+ spend by the company over the past few years and will take the company's 15 year investment total through the 2 billion mark.

Colorado Ski Areas Add Terrain

Two famous Colorado ski areas will add terrain designed particularly for families and novice skiers this coming winter, but with some more advanced glade skiing too.

Copper (pictured) is launching the Western Territory, an area on the resort's western-most side dedicated to inspiring beginner skiers, kids and families to connect with Copper's history and heritage. This season that will include two new family-friendly adventure zones, two new trails and a connector trail that offer skill development and animation with the aim of inspiring families learning the sport.

New 10 Seater Gondola in Verbier, Switzerland

A new 10-seater gondola is being constructed in Verbier, ready for the 2021/22 ski season.

The new lift, which replaces the Médran 1 six-seater cable car, has been delayed due to Covid-19 and poor weather conditions.

The new Médran 1 gondola, linking Verbier to Ruinettes, aims to double capacity and help keep queuing time down.

New 6-Seater Chairlift for La Plagne

La Plagne celebrates its 60th birthday this winter with the introduction of a new enjoy a direct link between Plagne Centre (1990 m) and Champagny-en-Vanoise.

The brand new 6-seater La Lovatière chairlift will take skiers via the top of Les Verdons (2479 m) to access Champagny. It will take 5 ½ minutes and carry up to 3000 skiers and snowboarders per hour.

Travel from EU and UK To Ski North America this Season is On

After Canada relaxed its border controls earlier this month to allow international leisure travellers to return after 18 months of being locked out, the US has announced it to will be re-opening its borders in November, just as the 21-22 season is getting underway.

Fresh Snow in the Alps as More Glaciers Open

The past few mornings have revealed more snowfall arriving in the Alps with first the French and Italian side seeing snowfall above around 2,000m on Sunday, then more areas further East in Austria and Switzerland getting dumped on too.

Squaw Valley Changes Name To Palisades Tahoe

[b]One of the world's most famous ski resorts is changing its name after more than 60 years.

Squaw Valley by Lake Tahoe in California was established a few years before hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics.

However the word "squaw" has been contentious for decades and is now widely considered to be a racist and sexist slur, with increased awareness thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, and the resort announced a year ago that it would be changing its name.

Ski Train Appears to Be Back for Coming Season

Reports from the French media appear to indicate that the direct ski train service which connects London St Pancras with the French Alps appears to be back for the coming ski season.

The Eurostar service was axed last winter, before the ski season itself was largely cancelled, causing uproar at the irony that hopes of a more environmentally-friendly world post-pandemic was actually resulting in fewer rail options.

Les 3 Vallees To Have One Less Gondola

The world's largest ski area, the 3 Valleys, will have one less gondola this coming winter as it switches the former Plattières 3 gondola to a chairlift.

The new Bouquetin chairlift, high-speed six-seat lift has replaced the gondola. It whisks skiers up to the slopes of Saint-Martin and Les Menuires in just two and a half minutes.

Austrian Glacier Opening For Season A Week Early, On 17 September

Austria's highest ski slopes at the Pitztal Glacier in Tirol region have announced they're to open a week earlier than planned – on the 17th rather than 25th September.

The centre said it was due to "really good conditions" there after several late August and early September snowfalls up high. They published pictures of groomers out preparing the slopes already.
