South America’s 2021 Season Start Stalls
Published : 20-Jun-2021 03:38
The ski season in the Andes is yet to get underway with most of Argentina and Chile's ski areas having not previously committed to opening dates now saying it will be July until they open.
There appears to be a combination of factors at play – pandemic restrictions which in some areas are resulting in local lockdowns preventing ski areas opening, then some resorts are possibly delaying opening in low season due to the limited opportunity to break even with international borders still closed. Then the third reason is there hasn't been a huge amount of snowfall so far.

Tignes Opens For Summer Ski Season
Published : 19-Jun-2021 10:15
Tignes has become the fifth French ski area to re-open its lifts and some ski slopes following the easing of French lockdown measures at the end of last month.
It joins its neighbour, Val d'Isere, along with les 2 Alpes to offer summer glacier skiing. Avoriaz and la Clusaz both re-opened a few slopes in the past month, but in their cases it was each just for a few symbolic days, just because they could.

Southern Africa’s 2021 Ski Season Underway
Published : 10-Jun-2021 12:54
The ski slopes of Afriski in Lesotho have opened for the 2021 ski season today, the first (and it's looking like probably the only) commercial ski field to open in southern Africa this winter, as it was last year.
With a base at over 2,900 metres above sea level, Afriski is one of the world's highest resorts, at its base at least and although it is rare for it to see big snowfalls, it does get them occasionally. However its business model relies on more predictable sub-zero overnight temperatures which allow kits snowmaking system to create a ski run of up to a kilometre in length, as well as a fun park, which survives daytime highs when they're in positive temperatures.

Avoriaz Opening for Skiing this Weekend
Published : 07-Jun-2021 09:42
Avoriaz say that when they open for summer this coming weekend, they'll be opening some ski slopes as well as mountain bike tracks, their golf course, and other activities.
They say its because of the "exceptional amount of snowfall that fell last winter". Like most French ski areas they were unable to operate ski lifts during the winter season because of a French government ban, although most resorts were otherwise open.

New Zealand Ski Area First To Open in Southern Hemisphere
Published : 04-Jun-2021 09:04
New Zealand's small 'club field' of Hanmer Springs has pipped the bigger ski area of Mt Ruapehu as well as Australia's largest resort Perisher to be the first to open in the southern hemisphere for the 2021 ski season.
Hanmer Springs (pictured top and at the bottom) decided to open on Thursday 3rd June following a big snowstorm which left deep snow lying on many New Zealand ski slopes. Perisher had previously decided to open a week earlier than originally planned, on Friday 4th instead of Friday 11th June. It had had cold weather for snowmaking enabling it to build a base.
