Snow Finally Arrives in North America's Pacific Northwest

It's snowing heavily in Western BC, Washington state and Alaska – also known as the Pacific Northwest of North America.
That's not unusual of course, the area's ski resorts consistently place in the world top 10 for their huge average annual snowfall stats – 10 metres is a bad year at many of them. One, Mt Baker in Washington State, holds the world record for the most snowfall reported in a single season.
It's just that until this week it has been rather different this autumn. Many areas, including Whistler Blackcomb, have had very little snowfall and it has been so warm that what would normally be snow has been falling as rain.
Ski areas in all three states/provinces have been delaying opening or opening with just one or two runs skiable. This is in contrast to much of the rest of North America which has seen abundant snowfall.
But this week is different. Temperatures have dropped to freezing at resort level and as low as -10C up high and the snow has begun dumping down.
Whistler reports 40cm of powder over the past few days and going inland for Revelstoke (pictured above) its 16cm in the past 24 hours.
The snow is expected to keep falling through this week with some areas potentially receiving more than a metre by the end of the weekend.
