The mother of a 13 year old boy from Milwaukee who narrowly survived death after hitting a tree when skiing without a helmet has told local media that she has told her son, "...you're a miracle, and God has a plan for you... even if it's just to get the message out to wear your helmet, even if it's not cool when you're skiing."
The parents of 13-year-old Jacob DeGroot was airlifted from the slopes of Nordic mountain to a local trauma centre where surgeons told them the odds were not good and that he had to be operated on within five minutes to avoid certain death. They removed part of his skull to relieve the swelling of his brain and Jacob has lost some hearing and has speech issues but doctors hope to replace the section of his skull they removed in mid-March.
"On ski hills, wearing a helmet can help prevent injury up to 50%. Those are some overwhelming stats, to keep our kids safe," Child safety advocate Lisa Klindt-Simpson told local media.

I think we've had enough threads about the merits or wearing a helmet or not and we go over the same ground over and over.
I think the consensus seems to be that everyone will do what they feel is right for them.
You hear stories all the time in all sports about serious injuries. There is a risk element involved, you have to assess that risk, or take precautions to reduce the risk whether that involves what you wear, or how and where you ski.
But please, no more threads about whether its good or bad to wear a helmet. Those that do, do so because they feel safer, may have had a serious fall themselves, or know someone who has.
Those that don't either don't like the look or feel of them, or simply like to have the freedom to choose not to.
Its entirely up to the individual.
Keep on bobbling in the free world.......

Wearing a helmet protects your head, no doubt about it. You cant argue that, if people (adults) dont want to wear one , then fare enough. If your head hits a tree or a hard surface you are going to get hurt....end of. Whats more important in your body, your leg, your arm or your brain ?? eh??
