The Snow Forecast for The Alps - 31st December 2015

Published : 31-Dec-2015 11:08

Hopefully you'll be aware that the game's about to change in Europe... or at least the weather most certainly is. If you had missed that, you should a) come here more often and b) sign up for our Snow Mails... 8)

As there are some rather hyperbolic (or "ludicrously optimistic" as you may prefer) predictions floating around we thought we'd give our take on things; the forecast's looking good but it's not indicating a new Ice Age at this time...

First World Cup Points for Alex Tilley

Published : 29-Dec-2015 02:03

Delancey British Alpine Team athlete Alex Tilley has claimed a top 20 finish and 12 World Cup points, finishing 19th after the second run in the World Cup Giant Slalom in Lienz, Austria.

After a frustrating start to the season for Tilley, from Aberdeenshire in Scotland, where she has been skiing well but not managing to pin down a result, the Scot rose from joint 27th in run one to 19th, after some impressive splits at the top (second fastest) and at the bottom (fifth fastest).

Get your Snow Dance on for a Happy New Year

Published : 27-Dec-2015 10:16

The major forecast models have been swinging into agreement over the past few days, and it does - at last - look as if the mild, high pressure system that has been bothering the European Alps will be moving on at the end of the year.

That weather system has effectively been blocking out more wintry weather in The Alps, and it will be giving way to cold air from the East.

FIS Bans Drones At Races

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has rapidly decided on a completed ban on the use of drones for filming at its official sanctioned events including World Cup races.

The decision came after a drone carrying a TV camera fell to earth just behind Marcel Hirscher as he made his descent in a World Cup race at Madonna di Campiglio in Italy on Tuesday evening.

Huge Snowfall Continues On Pacific Coast

Published : 22-Dec-2015 08:32

Whilst much of the skiing world continues to have a 'slow' start to the season in terms of snowfall, North America's Pacific Coast is enjoying incredible snowfalls after a near five year drought.

The snow started falling in late October and has been fairly constant for nearly two months now, with some ski areas nearing 5m (17 feet) of snowfall to date. Revelstoke in BC, Western Canada currently has the season running as its second snowiest ever on its historical snowfall graph.

Study Finds Helmet Cams Don’t Increase Risk

Published : 21-Dec-2015 04:40

Concerns that fixing a cam on your helmet might lessen its protective qualities in an impact have been laid-to-rest, to some extent, by an exhaustive new study carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).

The august body was commissioned by BBC Safety to investigate the potential effects that mounting a camera, such as a GoPro®, may have on the safety performance of helmets and their findings were that there weren't really any. In fact in a few cases they found the camera mounting appeared to actually absorb some of the impact before the force reached the helmet itself.

Did First Deployment of Airbag In World Cup Race Help Or Worsen Accident?

Published : 21-Dec-2015 08:30

The Austrian downhill racer Mathias Mayer, the Sochi Olympic gold medallist, suffered a high speed crash in the Men's World Cup Downhill in Val Gardena on Saturday, spinning through 180 degrees in the air before landing at high speed on his back.

Mayer was not seen to move much after the crash and was airlifted to hospital. However initial reports, including quotes from the Austrian team boss, were good, stating that he had been helped by the first deployment of the new airbag system for World Cup racers, and had been cushioned from serious injury, only suffering bad bruising.

New Ski Resort Opening Tomorrow

Published : 20-Dec-2015 09:14

A new ski area will open in Utah in the USA tomorrow (Monday 21st December). Cherry Peak ski area, located close to the border with Idaho, is believed to be the first new ski area to open in North America since the 2008 economic crash.

It is also reported to have been planned since before that crash, and delayed opening as planned last season due to final design changes. Even for opening day one of the three triple chairlifts is not fully complete so will not open, but the other two, and a fourth lift, a 165m long carpet conveyor, will.

Christmas In The Alps – Better Than Last Year

Published : 18-Dec-2015 01:17

(Les Arcs this week)

December weather conditions in the Alps look like they're going to be warm for Christmas for the second season in a row, but two things have been different this autumn to autumn 2014: firstly the big snowfalls at the end of November and secondly periods of cold enough weather for snowmaking.

(Some) Snow In The Alps

Published : 17-Dec-2015 03:36

It's perhaps not enough to get excited about, but there has been some fresh snow in the Alps over the last 24 hours, the first this month in many cases.

In most resorts it is a case of 'a dusting' on higher slopes but some heave measured what they've got – the biggest 15cm/6 inches claimed by Obergurgl, slightly ahead of the Stubai with 14cm. Verbier, Ischgl and Laax have all reported 10cm a piece.

Les Arcs Snow - December 15th 2015

Conditions on the pistes in the 1950/2000 bowl are still good; nightly grooming and top-ups from the snow cannons is keeping them in good order. On the 1600/1800 side of the ridge, and up toward Peisey, the snow is notably thinner below about 1800 metres; particularly on slopes that get a lot of sun.

Les Arcs Snow Reports - 12th to 19th December 2015

This winter, we're kicking off our season in the familiar surrounds of Les Arcs; we say familiar but it's been a few years so it'll be interesting to see what's changed...

Having previously stayed in pretty much every "Arc" village from Villaroger to Peisey, a recent presentation from Arc 1950 persuaded us to try the most recently built of the Les Arcs stations. Cheap flights from easyJet and the promise of quiet slopes in the opening week sealed the deal and here we are.

Canada's Warmer Winter May Mean More Snow

Canada meteorological service has announced that it expects the next two months to be an average of around 2C warmer than usual in the country. They say this is predominantly down to the current El Nino affect from the Pacific.

The news has brought mixed reactions. Last January parts of the country experienced record cold temperatures, so it being slightly less cold is being widely welcomed.
