In the scheme of things, £3mil is not a lot of money and if it gets people doing more sport and enjoying the outdoors rather than sitting in front of the playstation, £3mil well spent i think.
I have seen a lot of over 80's skiing and swimming without a wet suit in the middle of december - good on them. I dont think "coffin dodgers" is a particulary fair title.

OK, each to their own. However, £3m is a lot of money, how anyone could think otherwise is beyond me. I couldnt agree more about the playstation comment however. I blame the parents myself, as they buy them in the first place, allow their kids to spend all their time on them, and then moan that its things like that which cause kids to buy guns and go around shooting people. People in this country need to stop passing the buck and take a long hard look at themselves. A reef in Bournemouth is going to make very very little difference. £3m could have been invested in much better ways of getting people involved in sport.
I quite like the term coffin dodgers, in the same way as I like "ankle biters" for small children.
Dont take things so seriously.
Oh, and can you get some video footage of these under dressed old dears doing the skiing next time you see "lots" of them? Perhaps that explains why all these old people get hypothermia????
and wildly inaccurate too.
Most sports fund grass roots programs spending (or should I say "waste" hundreds of millions of pounds and produce VERY little. Tennis for example cannot get kids to pick up a racket. the councils turn the park courts into basketball courts !!
90% of boys play for a football team and give it up when they are 12 cause despite playing before they can spell it, the skills learnt are simply not good enough.
in that context with the money they spend... £3 million quid for some surf waves is a great investment... it is NOT a lot of money.
If we all just moan about money distribution, nothing would get done. You cant please all the people all the time !!
So, you stick to your beer tasting, i'm going surfin.... HANG 10 Tony_H
Where on earth did you get that information from, dude?

So then Tony, at what age exactly, will you retire from skiing?
I have no idea. Probably when my body doesnt work anymore. I would hazard a guess at probably in my 60s, but you never know.
The coffin dodgers was a reference to the average age of people in Bournemouth, which I understand is around 87.
Shovel not required, Bandit, you naughty little stirrer.
Oh what a shame will you only be ski-ing for a couple more years
No.....you have lost me now.
Both subtle and evil in one single post.....

If this reef is successful, great, I will use it just because its there, but it will be of little benefit to a lot of people. Its intention is not to even be for the locals who have to pay for it, its designed to attract people to Bournemouth and to try and upmarket a fast declinening 'nice little seaside place'. It will never be achieved unless the undesirables are removed.
I too am a great believer in keeping kids off the streets, and off playstations etc. I think more money should be put into sport development, whatever the sport.
I spent years absolutely skint because of my sons tennis abilities, apart from a racquet sponsership that was all the help we could get. The cost of lessons, tournament fees, court fees, tennis shoes, clothes, travel etc were nearly a weeks wages, per month. At the age of 14 he was regularly beating lads that now make up our british davis cup team. No wonder at the age of 16 he decided to pack it all in, 'cos we could not keep up with his rich friends, and he would never be able to progress up the ranks. Fair play to him now he has turned it into a lucrative career as a professional tennis coach.
What I,m trying to say is, yeh surf reef, great idea kids will love it but how many parents round here can afford, wetsuits, surf boards, lessons and membership to surf clubs. Council build new tennis courts, but how many parents can afford £15 court fees, racquets, tennis shoes, lessons etc, especially for several kids. Money needs to be put into place to make these facilities more affordable.
Rant over now.

My life is all about my boys. They ski, sail, play football, tennis, swim, go on 10 mile bike rides, study (both way above average in their sats this year [y2 and 6]), go to theme parks, go to nice restaurants with us, travel to cities, etc, etc, etc.
Because they've got a ps3 and we allow them to play it for a few hours a week does that make us bad parents?
