So I've finally booked to go to Soll but the only deal I could get was to the Hotel Tyrol. It wasn't my first choice as I like smaller cosy hotels. Does anyone have any experience of it? I've checked tripadvisor and am now a bit apprehensive.
Thanks Steve |

I can vouch for sofa ski school. Mrs Smoothie and I watched it loads last year before our first lesson free ski trip and we were carving like the pro's (at least we thought we were which is the main thing).
We just watched it over and over again, practising in our heads before sleep about 3 weeks before we went. I think some if it went in by mental osmosis. Steve |

That's a fair point Bandit, and I hereby retract it. I'm going to get shouted at now but what the heck . . . I'm not quite sure where the debate is here. Those that want to wear helmets don't seem to be too worried about how statistically useful they are. Someone on telly banged their head and died, that's enough for me to wear a helmet. Those that don't want to wear helmets seem to be doing a lot of research to prove to themselves that they don't need to because skiing is perfectly safe. Yes I'll miss the wind in my hair when I don my new lid in a few weeks time but that's just a small part of skiing. The thrill and excitment will still be there except now when I get wiped out or hit some ice, etc I know that I've done everything I can to minimise the risk. To say that snow sports are not dangerous is just daft. Why do you think we all love it so much? Pointing head first down a very steep hill covered in snow and ice is not a safe thing to do but its bloomin great fun! I'll enjoy it all the more knowing that I've made even a fraction safe. Steve |

Well I'm not really interested in the stats. Natasha Richardson's fatal accident was enough for me. What if you had a fall on a rock hard icy patch . . .
Bottom line is snow sports ARE dangerous sports and it seems obvious to wear protection. Mrs Smoothie and I have bought our first helmets this year and I'm actually looking forward to wearing it. It makes me feel like a proper, grown up skier. |

Ok so this is the first time I've thought about going for the DIY ski holiday. We couldn't get the hotel we wanted with the TO's so I thought screw them I'll do this myself.
So the question for all you serious skiers is can you really be faffed cooking your own breakfast and dinner after a hard day on the snow? It looks to me like the kind of places in Austria too book self catering are fantastic, homely farms with cute little aparments tagged on. Does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing. In particular I'm looking for a place in Itter, nr Soll. Cheers! Steve |

Looks ok to me:
http://www.skiwelt.at/en/winter/webcams.html I've been watching the cams like a deranged lunatic and they've had the snow cannons out whenever the temperature drops below zero. Its due to stay cold for the next week so they'll keep piling it on is my guess. I'm going in a month. Can't wait! Cheers! Steve |

Hold out if you can. I booked to Scheffau last year, 2nd week in Jan and got half board with flights from Cardiff for £247 per person. Booked it the week before Christmas. The village is a bit quiet but you're slap in the middle of the Skiwelt so can ski all day and you won't get bored.
I'm biting my nails trying to hold on this year. A few people here have said they expect Jan prices to fall soon. Steve |
