In some places they've had a lot of snow - perhaps not as early as last year however Courmayeur for example has more than last year. Other places not quite as much.
A good depth of snow is a welcome sign that the season will last but the snow can melt mighty quickly in the spring - Les Arcs at the end of March was slush - you could visibly see the snow line retreating. The year before, when there had been less snow over the Alps, a week later & the snow was still good in Sauze D'Oulx - just the final drop down was heavy - only the last 50 metres into the town were gone. The late season weather is more important to the snow quality however the base is vital to wheter or not there is any snow remaing (not sure if that makes great reading) |
Off too Courmayeur in early Feb - I've got to sort hire out for my daughter's boyfriend - I gather there are 2 hire shops - is one better than the other?
Can you get to both on foot or do you need to get on the cable to get to the one at Plain Checruit? Andy |
The only "ski" item I wear on the plane is one of my jackets.
Salopettes would be too hot & I'd look even more of a wally with my ski boots on! |
Oakley Flack Jackets for me - they have a water & mist repellant coating (that the half jackets don't)- the gold iridium lens is a good compromise.
I've just lashed out on some persimmon lenses in case the light is poor. I don't like goggles & to be honest the gold iridium lenses performed better than either my goggles or photochromic Bolle sunnies when the visibility was poor last year. Just don't go for too dark a lens. |
It's a technique that predates the era of modern carving skis which have introduced a wider stance, however the narrow stance is still a valid technique for moguls etc where it's difficult to turn with a wide stance (which has one ski on top of the mogul & the other lower down), the narrow stance allows you to turn more easily on top of the mogul.
The bilateral teapot arm stance is/was a very French ski instructor posture. Not sure if it has a name. |
Need - is what you tell your wife/husband.
Want - just as it sounds. We all know you can get some good kit at bargain prices and can spend a shed load more on something which is no better. If you can afford it buy the clothing you like. OK this may not be the perfect comparison but we all know Asda's £4 jeans are just as good as a £75 pair and if we are probably kidding ourselves to justify a nicer cut or designer label. Ski clothing has a few more factors to consider like bulk & breathability but once you've reached that threshold buy the kit you like assuming you can afford it. Not all the expensive kit is high quality - too much of the price going on marketing and expensive retail outlets. |
I've used Meteor meet and greet more than once - saves all the hassle of transfers from off site parking.
Only gripe can be a bit of a wait if your flight is late and their valets are busy may mean you have a bit of a wait - 20 mins or so. Better at Stanstead than Manchester. |
Ironic really - didn't they demolish the Aviemore resort last year because of too little snow in recent years and skiers opting for snow sure destinations?
