Hi Darcicles,
I agree snow chains brought in or near resorts do seem to be a little on the cheap side , whether this is a manufactured thing so over the course of a season they sell more as they are only expected to last a week at best?....
I brought some RUD snowchains which are of solid sturdy quality ( coast £48 on offer ) and have never let me down , on the snow tyre issue I think you will see the benefits over a normal tyre anyday, although a good set of chains will still be needed and required for the real heavy going, also when the Police say you need to put them on at times.
From the tyres I have looked at Continental Conti-Winter-Contacts seem the best about....

All the best

Thanks Jon
I've been looking at Conti's, will be making the purchase next time. Where did you get your chains from? We bought one pair from the UK with us (£40 - rubbish) and two pairs in the resort at 60 Euro a piece.
Would have been ok had we not been in a chalet that was right at the top of a very steep hill!
Cheers
