If you're going from Calais or nearby, there's no contest. The Reims route avoids the congestion around Paris, and is generally a much quieter and calmer motorway. We've tried both on many occasions, and there's no doubt that Reims is the easier, quieter, safer and faster.

Bon voyage!

Avoid Paris at all cost. Follow signs for Lyon. When you get near the resort follow local signs and not your satnav . Shortcuts can often be a bit scary on mountain roads.

Sound advice - don't think satnav's understand about snow and cols being closed and roads that aren't cleared all winter.

Driven many times, always via Reims and always avoid Paris. keep Hi vis in car easily accessible, not in boot. Have heard (rumour)of UK driver being fined for getting out of car without hi vis on, even though he had one. If you drive a diesel get some before going up the mountain as it contains a winter additive. Last year couple of nights in la Tania were colder than -20c

Just got back from Chamonix; we did the Reims route, very easy. One word of advice with regards to the dreaded snow chains; in a week we had 3 sets! Our chalet was up a very high gradient hill (it was described as a small hill - it clearly wasn't) the snow chains got us around 200 yards before breaking and we ended up having to leave our car in the garden of another chalet and then pull our luggage on sledges up the rest of the hill! We purchased another two sets of chains (and yes they were put on correct)links kept breaking etc. When they stay in place they get you to your destination albeit at a limit of 30 miles an hour even on the main roads. When we go again we will invest in snow tyres, the locals had no problems with them, whizzing around everywhere even a little too much at times.

If you need a place to stop over (we have three kids so stopped near dijon) I can recommend a very nice Chambre d'hote with a delightful breakfast.
