Hi, I'm looking at staying in Obertraun at the Obertrauner Hof in late March and hitting some of the Dachstein West ski area. I've read mixed reviews of the Hof and also some have said on the forum that there's no nightlife in Obertraun, how true is that?
We're looking a lower cost holiday hence the Obertraun stay so does anyone know if it's really that close to the lifts: chalet owner said it's less than 20 minute drive.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hello Steve
I have stayed at Obertraun 3 times and is a typical Austrian village but with the added bonus of a beautiful lake and mountains surrounding the village without all the tourist tack.
As for nightlife - nothing like Kitzbuhel or Obertrauen or Zell but there is the Haifisch Bar (Shark bar) that is open Friday and Saturday nights (might be Thurs as well) This is not busy because Obertraun has few tourists so will be just the locals. OK for late night drinks till 3 am or later I think!
The are a few eating places - the Obertraunerhof has a restaurant - Also the Glankowirt is excellent - from the Hof turn left. Hotel Haus am See (by the lake) serves food but lacks choice - location in the summer is fantastic.
I recommend the Pizza place which has bowling Austrian style, which is near to the lake. The pizzas are homemade and tasty. Next to the Pizza place is Hotel Seerose run by MArk and Jane Farthing from England - they are a wonderful couple and have a bar primarily for guests but pop in if open and they will welcome you I'm sure.
We last went skiing 2 years ago in March (stayed at Seerose) and unfortunately had rain whilst skiing - did not go last year due to 4 day week.
Now the skiing - About 1.5 miles from Obertraun is the Krippenstein with Austrias longest ski run - 8 km - well worth the cable car wait! Best to drive to Russbach - 15 -20 min drive- for the Dachstein West ski area - excellent uncrowded skiing. If snow a bit iffy then you can go to the Postalm, near to St Wolfgang which is excellent for kids and learning - also has an area dedicated for sledging and rubber rings!
I had some friends stay at the Hof (recommended by me although I have not stayed there as was busy!)and they found them extremely helpful. Alot of small family run Austrian accommodation is basic, but always clean and excellent value. If you want plush carpets etc etc then you stay at 5 star Hotels and pay the price. Obertraun is excellent value for money and I stayed at one place 3 people 4 nights and paid around 220 Euros!
I hope you have a wonderful stay and the snow is good for you - sometimes the best snow is later on in the year as it was 3 years ago!
Regards
Andy
