Also, what are the best ski guide companies in Chamonix? My husband and I are expert skiers from Colorado but we've never skied the Alps.
Thanks!

Megeve is a very nice ski area, the piste is very groomed but still varied and enjoyable. I love a day trip here, if the snow is good you can ski all the way to St. Gervais, but have only managed this once.
Chamonix is probably about an hour drive away, not sure if you could use public transport but you can check with the tourist office. However there is a train service from Les Houches into Chamonix itself.
Chamonix conprises 4 ski areas:
Les Houches will be the closest with the famous Kandahar men's downhill ski run. Nice family resort.
Brevent Flegere - nice sunny slopes. Good skiing.
Le Tour - we found this to be a very windy cold resort with a small ski area.
Argentiere, Grands Montets - this has the reputation of having the most difficult black ski runs. Never skied here.
You may want to consider Les Contamines, another of our favourites and very close to Megeve.
Hope this helps.

If you haven't skied in Europe before keep in mind the difference in 'off piste' definition. In North America you are fine within the resort boundary but if you leave a groomer in Europe you are generally 'off piste' straight away and can find yourself in a lot of trouble.

Pablo is right when he states the difference between French off piste and American - you just don't do it without a guide as the end of the piste is literally the end of the ski area!

ParalyticSkiCrazie wrote:I have never been to Megeve but have passed the road to it many times. In Winter you have to use the autoroute to get to Chamonix via Geneva so I would guess 1.5 to 2 hours. There is probably not direct public transport. Chamonix is quite spectacular and at about the same height as Megeve. The Vallee Blanche with a guide you would enjoy. I would consider staying there.
