mcmckee If you re staying in Megeve without a car, probably the easiest way to ski the best bits of Chamonix, is to arrange to join a group for the day with the local Guides bureau as they all run minibuses for their groups. Bear in mind, that if the weather is marginal in the Chamonix valley, Megeve/St Gervais is where all the Chamonix guides take their groups )
Argentiere is on the must do for your stay. The Grand Montets has an infinite variety of routes, some glacial, some not.
Depending on the timing of your visit, the Vallee Blanche may be skiable. This descent is never (really) closed to skiers, however it's definitely THE place to take a Mountain Guide because of the crevasses, and huge variation in the difficulty of the routes on offer.
As has already been pointed out, off piste in France, requires you to take responsibility for your own decisions, your own and others safety, and if you get into trouble, you will need good quality insurance if you want to be picked up.
If you take independent travel to Chamonix, then Chamonix dot net has lots of guides listed. http://www.chamonix.net/english/mountain_guides/guides_bureau.htm
Possible to stay in Megeve and ski Chamonix?

Fabulous area but Guide recommended up there too if it's unfamiliar; the off-piste is steep and a wrong turn can put you in big trouble very quickly.
