so is not Alpe D'Huez not in the Alps ...and having looked at the map you have to go through ...or past Lyon ..also 200k is only 124miles and I think most of them are going up and down! :roll:

Yes done it before. Got into Calais about 9am and were past ADH by 4pm.
Reims, Troyes, Dijon, onto A39 Dole, Bourg en Bresse, A42 past Lyon Airport, left onto A43 and then A48 Grenoble, Pick up N85 signed Vizille and then D91 signed Bourg d'Oisans and then turn left up the mountain to ADH.
Doddle.

DEFINITELY have a go with snowchains at home - also if you've got a piece of old carpet put it on bottom of boot - when you come to fit snow chains in the snow/ice/dirt you'll know why. Also don't do what we did - buy canned drinks and leave them in the car (in Morillon 2010) they froze hard and split the cans it went down to -20 overnight. reims is excellent place to stop - about 3 hours from tunnel. Take sledges for anyone - light, great fun and alot of French people will have them- of all agea.

Good idea drive through Switzerland and buy a vingnette to save money !!!!!!

Some old gloves for the chains is sensible too.

The old route was always Paris before the Reims motorway was built. Paris is shorter but only quicker if you go through between 1am and 4am!

Remember to park facing downhill in the mountains (if parking outdoors) and leave the car in gear with the handbrake off if it's going to be very cold - not much fun trying to free a frozen handbrake! Also remember not to leave your windscreen wipers on the windscreen unless you want to peel off the rubber!

Brilliant piece of advice re the handbrake, I see so many people struggle with this issue.
Also take an old bed sheet to put over the windscreen to protect from freezing.

Wow just had a look again at this. Thank you for all the useful advice for me and others. Appreciate the help with no tolls but in this instance we will do tolls. We have been in convoy once with friends and vaguely remember the route so would rather not have quite so much anxiety but if we drive again may look at that.
Great idea about handbrake and also old gloves and bit of carpet for snow chains as well as screen wash.

Just one strange thing I have had all sorts of websites advising different things about hi viz jackets. I have heard everyone in car needs one, two are needed (we are a family of four) and the AA site is still saying one for driver.
Has anyone got absolute confirmation of this please. We already have one but would prefer not to buy more especially 4 if not needed.
