Ski Maintenance for first time owner!

Hi All.

My Wife has been skiing for 30 years (she's 37 now) and whilst we're doing our Grand Tour of Europe we happened upon a bargain pair of ski's - like we didn't already have enough gear in our 4x4! They're brand new Head ski's and 3 seasons old (they're in the car and the exact type escapes me but is irrelevant for my query)....we paid €130 for them including bindings, she likes them because they're not as 'fat' as some of the newer models that we find in rental shops and she likes a slightly longer ski than maybe is recommended from the newer types. We took them to a second shop in Andorra where the chap gave them a once over and corrected the settings etc - he indicated that they were actually okay and that the bindings themselves were a bargain - I digress.....

So, they're new from the factory and three years old with just the original wax. Do we need to get them waxed again before first use? How often in a normal season would we need to them waxed/edged (they'll be used probably 10-15 days/year) - can I wax them myself easily or just pay the small charge for a shop to do it?

Note that she didn't get chance to give them a run as the snow was awful when we passed through but we will be doing multiple trips to the Sierra Nevada and Andorra in 2019 - I appreciate that this was a bit rash but frankly for €130 it was a risk worth taking and they're the same size as hired before.

Thanks, thoughts welcome.

Snow Chains

Hi - thanks both, good point ref M&S markings. I think I'm covered from a 'requirement' point of view with M&S but will check the tyres to see if I have that extra 'snowflake' marking - I don't recall it but have never checked for it either. If I carry chains anyway then I should be fine if the going gets tough.

I'll definitely be practising - heard too many stories of disastrous snow chain efforts at the bottom of a mountain in the cold and dark! I'll do further research into the manufacturers recommendation for my 4x4 also.

Thanks again and if anyone has any further recommendations ref brands etc please add them.

Snow Chains

Hi All!

This season we'll be mid-way through our year long drive around Europe and I'll soon be taking a quick flight back to the UK to swap my swimming trunks for my ski boots!

It's all a bit vague but we're hoping to grab a few opportunities for skiing but we're flexible depending on weather and our eventual route:
1. Southern French Alps late November as we pass through from Italy - depends on the snow/resort.
2. Canillo, Andorra 9-14th Dec - already booked and hoping for some snow.
3. Sierra Nevada Spain Jan-Feb, we'll be hanging around in Andalusia so will go for a ski whenever the conditions are good.
4. Alps at the beginning of April as we head home to the UK.

Anyway, I digress!

I'm going to invest in some chains as with all the mountain driving it's probable that I'll need them at some point, I have a Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 so I think I need chains for all four wheels.

Do any of you guys with mountain driving experience have any comments or suggestions for type or brand etc? Will the textile type be okay or should I just go for the real deal? Tyres are 265/60/18 - I already have M&S tyres fitted by the way...

Any thoughts or opinions welcome.

Thanks

That's a good point, it was a bit of a whim and in retrospect for the amount of time I'll use it I'll just 'point and shoot' - thanks!

Is there ANY advantage to hiring anything but economy skis?
Started by Kowal.Ski in Ski Hardware, 31 Replies, discussing La Plagne and Les Deux Alpes
I've yet to find a ski hire shop that won't swap skis on request as and when my Wife has wanted to.....

On a scale of 1-4. (4 being the better) we normally go for 3's and choose a decent all mountain model that is guaranteed to be the one we choose, if we get it wrong we change until we get it right.....we obviously don't take the pi$$ and aren't too fussy. I only ski once a year so buying isn't a consideration at all.

Hi All

Off to Obergurgl with 11 mates for my 40th on the 20th!

Can anyone recommend a decent helmet mount for an iPhone? I have a 7 so waterproof is not a criteria, just needs to fix well and hold the phone properly!! I don't want to spend a huge amount either as it won't see too much use to be fair - just for banter

Thanks
