Skiing in Les Gets/Avoriaz
Started by User in France, 6 Replies
Just been checking for my Sister as she's off with the Fambo on Saturday. J2Ski Forecasts says 50cm (High) between now and Sunday! :D

Was there in Jan'11 and we ended up in Avoriaz chasing the slightly better conditions - only a 20 minute drive to the cable car and a great run down to the bottom at the end of the day to where the car was parked!

I, unfortunately, have to wait until March for my trip to Obergurgl

That was the good thing about the Binatones, I think they have 64 channels each with 9 'sub' channels so well over 500 chances not to be on on somene elses frequency....some sets do only have up to 6 channels though I believe?

We took a set of 4 Binatone Action 950's out to Les Gets this year (Jan '11), they have tons of different frequency settings so the odds of 'chatter' are negligible. I was up at the top of La Rosta (Eglantine) having a lesson and my Wife who was down in the village decided to spark up some witty banter - I was standing in line waiting to be instructed when my pocket starting spurting the most absurd load of rubbsih much to the amusement of my classmates! Point being that on a perfectly clear day these radios worked fine, on crappy days the range did diminish a bit but all in all if you're on the same side of the mountain they were surprisingly good. Read reviews online for realistic characteristics rather than rely on manufacturers quoted range etc.

'Tarquin' did manage to meet 'Fee Fee' and her family for lunch that day ;o)

Okay....got back yesterday after a week in Les Gets. Hard Packed and lots of ice but perfectly skiable even for a comparative beginner like myself.....not saying it was the best skiing ever but actually not as bad as other reports had suggested. Thursday was spent in Avotiaz which was much better and had some great snow - okay so a white out which was tricky but cleared up after lunch for a great afternoons skiing. gonna get a long weekend sorted for early March - not going to book until late though do we get guaranteed snow.

Skiing in Avoriaz today was ok higher up, but seeing a boarder on the lower slopes on his tummy, face down the mountain doing breast stroke, sums it up really :-(

Hmmm I arrive in Les Gets tomorrow so if you could get busy and start barrowing in some snow for me that would be awesome - nothing forecast for next 7 days and temps are double figures.

Avoriaz here we come.

Full report on my return peeps - enjoy!
