I'm lost as to what we are arguing about here?
Niederau is a cheap'n'cheerful entry level ski resort for the great unwashed. It is not St. Anton but OK if you wanna learn to ski etc. I think that sums it up? |

What you saying Dave? Niederau are struggling because they are too slow to bring their prices into line with the market?
Those prices are looking cheap I think, so some discounting already going on. Just looked at those deals in order: Manchester Manchester Room only Gatwick Manchester etc The prices for Gatwick and Half Board start at £414 and to £433 for Niederau. So horses for courses basically. Niederau looking good value if you want half board and London flights. |

They are indeed struggling to fill the beds these days. Bookings come in later and later every year, and I guess therefore at discounts.
This is part of the reason that they have agreed to the new skilift link between Auffach and Alpbach being built at considerable expense next summer. Beds filled have gradually been falling away over the last 10 years according to the official stats. That said......I see plenty of people on the slopes and in the bars during the day (some of course commuting from Munich, but not that many). I think it is such a "family" resort that there simply isn't the drinking enthusiasm you get at bigger resorts. People have dinner and go to bed. O'Malleys can get vaguely busy, and the White Rabbit sometimes with younger crowd. Most people end up in the Cave Bar later on......but it is all very patchy, and hit and miss, and generally quiet!!! |

Well I was there most of last season, and found all the bars generally 30% full at best. Even at weekends etc. I hope it is better this year.

What is wrong Ian? That link shows the 7 day forecast for Niederau? Nothing happening just yet.
Apre-Ski in Niederau is indeed pretty lame frankly. |

Just keep an eye on this link:
http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/Austria/Niederau_snow.html I will be there from the 25th. They do an English Carol Service in the Church which is kinda popular. But don't panic yet. The resort does not even open officially until the 17th December. Plenty of time yet! |

Zell am See is a good bet 'cos you also have the Kaprun glacier there as a back-up plan just in case. But many resorts open early December in Austria so by mid-Jan we should be in full swing.
Best dump of snow last year was pre-xmas and then 26th Jan. Went downhill from there (pardon the pun). |

Actually I disliked the skiing at Kitzbühel, and you are correct that stuff like Saalbach, whilst lovely, is too far really.
Zillertal is an easy drive for me, and has the advantage of a glacier if needed late season, although I am hoping for better snow this year and that I will have had enough by April!!! So yeah.......my choice is either €600 for 4 passes at Wildschoneau and then just stump up €80 per day when I venture further afield. Or go for the Tirol pass and ignore the costs :-) Slightly tricky as Auffach is only 10 mins away and provides a good choice on my regular pass. Still undecided. Shame I cannot get a discounted rate!! |
