I know this is outdated but in case anyone from the UK was considering skiing in Montana. We had a ranching holiday there in July and stayed hour south of Great falls and 30 west of Helena both towns had airports and I know there were ski resorts within an hour of the ranch. Most direct flight we found was Heathrow to Minneapolis then internal to Helena/Great Falls/Billings/Bozeman. We loved Montana.

Schladming is fantastic skiing and only 1 hr 15 min transfer from Salzburg. Not a big British used resort but put it this way my group went there for 5 years. We ranged from good intermediate to advanced and were aged 40-50.

Wanderer, great to see you had another good trip to Soll. We were there again a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. We all said we would try somewhere else next year but alas such was the value for money and great skiing and Apres it got the vote by everyone to return there next year as well. So for those who have doubts about going to Soll it must have something going for it to make us consider going 3 years on the trot.

Just got back the Ski Welt last week stayed in Soll. The skiing all over was cracking. As for the " Theres a fantastic mountain hut on the return piste with a massive panoramic window & open 'fire' in the middle".over Going. We went there and I agree it looked marvelous but it was the only disappointment we had in regard to service all week, and the food was at best average. On the whole the eating houses on the moutains were great.

I was in Soll last week and although the recorded depth will not read very deep, the skiing conditions were excellent. When we were there we had a good dump of snow over 24 hours and even for the good intermediate skier it was more tiring and challenging for a couple of days but then again this must really help your technique for when the pistes are perfect.

Scladming is just over an hour by coach and has a train station which you can get direct from Salzburg. Skiing great. Not overloaded with Brits which many folk like. There are transfer buses there from the airport which you book direct from the resort. These generally work around the German flights into Salzburg. If you are interested I can give you more details.

Just a mention for those that are going I was amazed to see that the prices for beer etc in the town bars were exactly the same as last year. Varied between 3.00-3.50 Euros for a large draught beer. Word of advise if you are going independently shop around on line for lift passes, we got ours 20 Euros each cheaper by doing it before we arrived. The same can be said about ski hire. If you are staying in Soll town itself we have used a place which for 4 star ski hire was 58 Euros for 7 days. Good service, convieiently positioned and far cheaper than the places by the gondollas. Drop us a PM and I will be happy to give anyone details.
Piste condtions were fantastic, especially towards the end when they had worked on the recent snowfall. Apres was good again. A number of singers/bands doing the rounds in the bars. |
