I think it's important to remember that it should be down to personal choice at present, though I believe more and more people will wear lids as they will always have done so, be they beginners or having learnt as kids.

You shouldn't be judged one way or another by whether or not you choose to wear a lid.

Finn's statements are what worry me most about people wearing lids who haven't grown up in them - over confidence and a feeling of 'invincibility'.

There are some sports that you just don't do unless you are wearing a helmet, WW kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, etc. Wearing a helmet in these sports is the norm, but it doesn't mean that you run more dangerous rapids, or take on a suicidal pitch, or try bunny hopping over bottomless chasms. You wear the helmet as a basic safety precaution, because a bump on the head is not uncommon participating in these sports at any level of skill, or any level of difficulty. The beginning kayaker is just as likely to capsize on a class 1 rapid, and hit their head on a rock, as an expert kayaker on a class 5 rapid.

Am I more careful skiing without a helmet ? Of course I am, as I consider it foolhardy not to wear one. As I said before, following the over confidence argument, we should take seat belts out of cars, as it would make people drive more carefully.

I disagree, Trencher. In all those sports people learnt whilst wearing helmets.

In skiing the vast majority (at present) learnt without wearing them. It's a very different scenario.

Hello Dorset
Best to say that I have done many crazy things in my life but wearing a ski helmet is not one off them. Wearing one doesn't turn oneself into a inconsiderate slope user, just makes me feel safer that's all.
Have still to work out how to do a thread!

So you are suggesting we should ban helmets at ski resorts for safety reasons

Hi Finn,

Cool name, and spelt properly too! (My son's name BTW).
I'm not suggesting for a moment that wearling a lid is daft or crazy, just that I have concerns when many people haven't grown up wearing one, and the feeling of (over) confidence that brings.

Bit like most people thinking they're good drivers!

Glad you put the smiley in Trencher or you might have got a very different reply! Instead I'll just give your post the attention it merits......

Sooner or later, I believe, it will be compulsory to wear a helmet - nanny states, insurance and such like. I therefore take my hat off(excuse pun)to those who excercise their right not to wear one while they can. For those who do, fine. It's all about choice, for the time being.
