I flew to Toulouse from Gatwick New Year week, on Thomson Airlines. I put my boots in my hand luggage (Small wheely Salomonn case) as I have always done. I told them at check in that I had ski boots in my bag and it was very clear on the x-ray machine going through security. There were no problems at all there and back.

I reckon this has been done to death on various threads, although other airlines have been discussed as well.

Bascially, the best way to travel is with your boots packed in your suitcase which gets checked in. If you take skis, you can pack your ski bag out with sallos and ski jacket (or wear it to travel in) and then use hand luggage to carry bits like spare pair of shoes, electrical items, etc. I have always packed ski boots in my suitcase. If you need more than 20kgs for a week, you ought to think about a different type of holiday )

Sorry mate if you had to repeat the info again but i only found out about Thomson's being abit shirty and no boot bags on saturday. I'm a great believer in 'Dont ask dont get', and by asking you and others have told me what I needed to know. Ta

Think youself lucky your not on Austrian Airways who Thomson also use. Last year they gave us an allowance of 15kg each and we each had 5kg boots to be included in that 15kg along with the bags themselves that weigh 3 or 4 kgs. I felt like a F1 race engineer trying to strip out excess weight and basically ended up with next to nothing of mine in the cases, wife and daughter maxed out my allowance.
Boots where banned from hand luggage by security staff at East Midlands. I used the bootbags has hand luggage bags to keep the weight down and was asked numerous times if I was carring boots in the bag. Seriously considered wearing them which has been done before by someone on this forum. As Tony says, make sure you wear plenty of clothes, especially your Ski coat and shove plenty of other things like cameras, phones, video cameras and chargers in your pockets, no rules against carring those in your coat pockets.

has anyone an answer :- i have what could be called a ski trunk
measures 300 x 200 x 1700 mm wheels one end handle the other
quite common now all equipment fit in skis-poles-boots-clothing-etc total weight 20 kg. plus i carry hand luggage 5 kg. what is the reason having to pay extra ski carriage ? also i saw a notifaction that clothing should not be packed with skis as carriage would be refused
does this mean that this new type of luggage cannot be used could someone in authority at thompsons please have look at this problem hopefully coming up with a sensible answer surely it makes sense to have fewer bags ie. luggage + boot bag + ski bag or is it going to be impossible in the future to take our own equipment with the reduced allowances any info anyone petden

Gatwick maybe ok but some airports don't allow Ski boots as hand luggage, so beware not to get caught out. Bristol doesn't and I've seen several people being sent back to check-in from security beacause they tried to ignore the prominent signs posted round the check-in area and carry them on.
