As above, only one of everything except socks!

I have had my bag weighed twice by Easyjet last year and once by Ryanscare. I think Easyjet now specify that your 'ski carriage' covers an extra 12kg, anything else is excess - I think my Metrons would take me up to and over that so K2's when I us the orange ones!. No idea about Ryanair, I'm managing to avoid them this season - PHEW!

We had this discussion last season, specifically about the price for ski carriage.
I think you have to look at Ryanair and Easyjet as seperate cases. They now charge a ridiculous fixed fee of something like £60 for ski carriage, and they will weigh the ski bag, and also make you take out anything that is not either the one pair of skis and poles they permit you to take, or charge you for excess. Its simply a money making exercise.

I am flying BA for the first time in December, and they allow you to take one recognised sports equipment bag in addition to your hold bag at no extra cost, subject now to a maximum weight (new from this month). As long as its a ski or board bag, fill it up with as much of whatever you like, but beware the new weight limit imposed from Nov 2008.

As for the charter airlines, I have been with Monarch, First Choice, BMI and Thomas Cook and none of them have ever weighed a ski bag. In fact many of them never even check to see whether you have prebooked for ski carriage, and twice i have taken ski bags on a flight without paying for them. Its not the airline that imposes a charge, its the tour operator, so if you like a gamble, dont prepay, but you will pay more if you turn up and get caught by one of the holiday reps being on the check in!!! I think this is more relevant at the provincial airports like Bournemouth (Rose has some stories to tell about their security) whereas Gatwick is more of a sausage factory and they just stick a label on and tell you to dump your ski bag round the corner at the oversize bag check in, where no one checks anything but your boarding card.
Ski carriage this season is anything from £25 up to £45 depending on your tour op. Remember, its not the airlines that impose the charge, so its up to you whether you prebook or run the risk.

Like you Tony I'm flying BA in March with air-miles and guess what ski gear goes free, the down side it's from heathrow which is a bit of a trek from Norfolk, last year for two person Ryan-air charged £100 year before Easyjet charged me £60 for skis. What a rip off, budget airlines, great.

Airmiles for me too Ian, although i dont collect enough to make it a regular trip sadly.
I'm in South Lincs, so its hardly on my doorstep to go to Heathrow either, but having said that most flights I get are from Gatwick or Manchester, both 2 and a half hours drive from home, so heathrow on Xmas day night will be a doddle, stopping in the Sofitel at T5.
If I could choose, it would be Stansted every time, but most of the package deal flights are as above. Looking forward to Heathrow, T5, BA, and free ski carriage very much!!

Hi guys - Just a note on Ryanair. You probably know this already but in February 2008 coming back from Grenoble, Ryanair refused to let me take my ski boots on board as hand baggage (despite the fact that I had brought them out as hand baggage). They said it was French law, made me check them in and sent me off to the customer service desk to pay 15 euros for the privilege, so on top of everything else I almost missed my flight! Had been there many times before-this was the first time.Kate

This post has taken an interesting fork

Last year we went with Ingrams and they had a measly 15Kg luggage allowance and I think another 12kg for skis although when we got to checkin no one took any notice of the weight restrictions

Needless to say I will never use that tour operator again

I need to check if it was Ingrams :(

Kate, without being rude, you got shafted. French law, my ass. Moneymaking scandal, probably.

Golden rule of ski holidays - pack your ski boots in one of your checked in bags.
