I was told to take boots through as hand luggage, dont know who by mind.. unless i just made that up

Is that what most people do with ski boots, put them in the suitcase?

I always take boots as hand luggage. Especially if I'm taking alpine snowboard boots. There is no rental option for these boots if they become lost luggage. Also boots are the heaviest item to pack. You can pack a lot more kit if the boots are not being weighed at check in.

because I'm so inclined .....

Suitcase for me. It avoids any problems at security with boots, and also means they are packed away and out of danger of being damaged. You should be able to get a weeks worth of gear and your boots in for under 20 kilos. If not, you are taking too much stuff.

when we flew to austria last feb with ryan air,i filled up my lokker wheelie bag with 1 pair skis, poles, all our ski clothes for 2 adults and 2 children ,and also stuffed 3 of the boots with some nice californian wine ,i was a little worried as the rules on ski bag contents are not well shown on the ryan website ,but no worries they just let it through, and my bag wasnt the only one bulging at the sides there were several others.
