Thursday-Thursday is always going to be a bit tricky...you could try Bigfoot in Chamonix
www.bigfoot-travel.com/

who do flexible changeovers on quite a few of their properties. They are our agents too btw, (not a plug for us, we are a bit big for you I think :) - but they do have quite a lot of apartments for 6 as I remember, so might well be worth a try.

(ps i am not wanting to break any forum rules here so please let me know if I should edit this!)

ise - we'll be adding some more resorts to the maps over the next week or so but I'm keen to include as many of the smaller stations as we can, so please let me know if we miss one of your local spots.

TBH, I haven't had the heart to remove Abondance yet... I skiied there almost 20 years ago now and there was, indeed, an abundance of snow on that occasion...

Maybe we should add little tombstones for the resorts that fall victim to global warming and economic factors? :(

Let's do that, but my suggestion is that you defer that decision until it happens :D There's nothing to suggest the closure of Abondance was anything other than a business failure.

I'm also a bit confused, are you not listing Chapelle d'Abonance? Which is near Chatel and one of the rare gems of the PdS area. While it's Abondance near Thonon that's closed. Are these not entirely different places?

Abondance is a particularly good cheese actually and the local wine is good.

but accomodation is our main aim now,

Anyone have an apartment or a hotel that will take us for a week from a Thursday to a Thursday in Val d Ìsere or Courchevel or pretty much anywhere in the area?Or any ideas in other resorts?

I'm not sure I'd describe either Val or Courcheval as near Geneva. For France, how about Chamonix, St Gervais, Megeve, La Clusaz or Grand Massif (Flaine, Morillon, Samoens etc). I think Grand Massif would suit you best, try Les Carroz for accommodation and the hotel Le Bois de La Char in Les Carroz is worth a look. But, just call or mail their central reservations and they'll sort it out.

It`s come up a few times, But I would definitely choose La Clusaz...Great resort!
A bad day on the slopes is better than a good day in the office !

Gareth

I can do Thursday to Thursday in Chalet Timaris on the edge of Morzine. 15 minutes walk to the centre and bars, ski bus on the doorstep. one hour drive from Geneva. We can sleep up to 12 in four rooms.

We don't cater, but do host so you can get the best out of your stay without havng to worry about whether you'll be back in time for dinner!! Full use of a well equipped kitchen if you want to eat in, or there are plenty of local places to eat too.

Just £200 each includes a transfer so no need for you to hire a car (unless you want to)

Hi Gareth

Are you still looking?
Sorry we've come on board a bit late to this discussion. But we would definitely recommend la Clusaz.

We used to go on a lot of ski breaks and always looked for short transfer times to the resorts. So we have tried most of the resorts in the Portes de Soleil, Chamonix and Grand massif.
We loved the skiing in Flaine but we have now settled (yes to live) in La Clusaz as it's such a fab resort and offers everything we want - it's picturesque as well as good skiing!

We now offer catered or self catered accommodation in and around La Clusaz as well as flexible change over days (except in the peak holiday weeks) so a Thurs to Thurs is no problem at all. Check out www.gravite.co.uk for more info or give us a shout on a PM.

It is Chapelle d'Abonance that has decided tp pull the plug due to is altitude, not Abondance which is considering renaming itself due to just such confusion.

Also there seems to have been a massive overlook of the PDS Portes Du Soleil in replies to your question. Avoriaz, Morzine, Chatel, Torgon, Le Croset.. 1000 mtrs to 2466 mtrs Huge area 1 hr from Geneva. cant really see how people have missed this in their suggestions.

It is Abondance that's halted skiing not Chapelle d'Abonance. Chapelle has a ski area at Crêt Béni and a high speed lift that links to Domaine de Braitaz and from there on to Torgon etc. In fact they've a new detachable lift opening at Crêt Béni next season.

It's not really a simple issue of altitude, they've been making a loss for 15 years, this is mostly just a business failure. If ski stations are normal businesses, and it's not certain in all cases they are, then we'd expect some to fail. It may be that some failed, or will fail, as a result of climate change but it doesn't follow that every failure is caused by poor snow. They needed over one million euro's in investment on top of yearly running costs of 640k euro's. When they went to the local government for the money it just wasn't available.

One of their main problems, as pointed out by David of Pistehors elsewhere, is that the French themselves weren't going. The angst of some UK skiers who've never been and never would must seem a bit rich to the locals of Abondance :D

They're close but an hour from the airport is stretching it a bit in an ordinary car.
